Our Galaxy• We live in the MILKY WAY GALAXY

• There are 8 planets in our Solar system

• All planets orbit around the SUN

About the Planets..• 8 planets are grouped into two

categories:– Inner Planets

• Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars– Outer Planets

• Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus. Neptune

Differences among Planets• Inner Planets– Mostly made up of

rock and ice

• Outer Planets– Made up of gases– Also called ‘gas

giants’

Mercury

• Small and Rocky

• Closest planet to the Sun

• Has many craters

Venus• Small and Rocky

• Hottest surface temperature of the planets!

• Holds very strong winds

Earth• Largest planet of the Inner planets

• Only planet that sustains life

• Is 4.5 billion years old!

• 71% of Earth is covered in water

Mars• Small, rocky planet• Cold & lifeless• Very strong winds• Past evidence of water on the surface– Possibility of life in the past?

Jupiter• Giant gas planet • Largest planet in our solar system–Would take 1,000 Earths to create 1

Jupiter! • Has 16 moons • Known for it’s giant red spot

Saturn• A gas giant

• Saturn is known for it’s visible ring

• Has the most moons a total of 18!

Page 13: To infinity and beyond!

Uranus• Gas giant

• Spins differently than the other planets

• Rotates sideways

• 15 moons Picture Provided by:http://www.solstation.com/solsys/uranus2.jpg

Neptune• Gas giant

• Farthest planet from the Sun

• Has 8 moons

The END • Now you know about Our Solar System,

THE MILKY WAY

• There are 8 planets– 4 inner planets – 4 outer planets

• Astronauts continue to study our galaxy today for new discoveries within our universe
