GOFFS UK/ARQANA COMBINETO HOLD IRISH BREEZE-UP
In a spirit of entente cordiale prompted by the extraordinary
environment of the coronavirus pandemic, Goffs UK and Arqana
have announced that they will join forces to hold their
respective breeze-up sales together in Ireland on June 29 and
30.
In what could be a first for European sales, the horses will
gallop "potentially in a timed breeze" a few days prior to being
offered for sale at the Goffs complex at Kildare Paddocks. There
will also be an online bidding facility to support the live auction.
A joint statement released by the two companies on Saturday
afternoon read, "The dates are dependent on the resumption of
racing in some form in the UK and/or France and/or Ireland, and
hopefully allow time for lockdown measures to be relaxed so
that there can be some attendance at the sale. Naturally all
government directives will be followed to ensure the safety and
wellbeing of everyone involved."
It is normal practice for the sale to take place in the day or
days immediately following the breeze session but the intended
gap between the horses breezing and the sale being conducted
is to "allow films of the breeze-up work, and other vital
purchaser information, to be disseminated around the world
whilst an online platform will support the live auction with
potential purchasers being offered the facility to bid as normal,
over the telephone or remotely via the Arqana and Goffs
websites." Cont. p2
BRITISH CLASSICS PROVISIONALLY MOVED
TO JUNE A Guineas meeting in early June and the Derby and Oaks run in
early July feature in the British Horseracing Authority's
"best-case scenario" planning for a resumption of racing. With
racing currently suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus
pandemic, the season's first four Classics have been delayed
from their usual slots in the calendar. However, the sport's
Resumption of Racing Group is working to draw up provisional
plans for when racing is able to return, with "a phased
approach" to racing behind closed doors anticipated in the
immediate stages.
In a communication sent to trainers on Friday evening, the
BHA said "it is unlikely that the entire black-type programme will
be staged this year," although it "will ensure that the key
generation-defining races will be run, as well as safeguarding the
Group 1 programme as much as possible."
With Royal Ascot currently still due to take place in its
traditional mid-June slot, the meeting could be sandwiched by
the Classic cards, although all plans very much depend on racing
being given the go-ahead to resume. Cont. p2

Goffs UK/Arqana to Hold Irish Breeze-Up Cont. from p1
Each sale originally had 165 lots catalogued for Doncaster and
Deauville, respectively. The relocation to Ireland is a practical
step in light of the fact that 143 of the Goffs UK lots and a
further 135 of the Arqana horses are being prepared by Irish
consignors.
Arqana executive director Freddy Powell and Goffs UK
managing director Tim Kent put their names to a joint statement
which said, "We are committed to providing the most vibrant
market place possible for our breeze-up vendors and believe
that this option delivers the best chance of achieving that goal.
This year's selection of breezers in both catalogues is as good as
ever and we are confident they will impress in any arena."
Teams from Goffs and Arqana will be at work at the sale,
which will be conducted in the existing catalogue order, though
the juveniles will breeze vendor by vendor in order to comply
with social distancing requirements.
Goffs Group chief executive Henry Beeby and Eric Hoyeau,
president of Arqana said, "We are extremely grateful to Naas
Racecourse, HRI and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing for their
helpful and proactive reaction to our request to hold our
Breeze-Ups in Ireland. These are challenging times but the
bloodstock industry is constantly willing to adapt and innovate
to whatever circumstances arise. In connection with our joint
approach, Goffs and Arqana have always been closely allied and
we will work as one to ensure we do our best by our loyal
vendors."
British Classics Provisionally Moved to June Cont. from p1
The BHA said, "Our planning would allow for the Guineas to be
run in early June, and the Derby and Oaks in early July, with
Royal Ascot still scheduled to take place in its existing slot
commencing on June 16.
"In this scenario, we would also be looking to stage several key
Classic trials, and other trial races feeding into Royal Ascot,
during the second half of May. We emphasise that a later restart
would require these plans to be adjusted accordingly."
The BHA concedes some of the principal Group 1 races for
older horses need to move to a slightly different date, especially
in order to accommodate the early Classics, and some may not
be open to 3-year-olds this year.
It adds: "This outline structure [and its likely condensed
nature] will need to be based on what is collectively best for the
Thoroughbred and the industry as a whole. And as with the
wider race programme, it is contingent on external factors and
will need to be adapted based on what's feasible in terms of
when racing can commence and in what form."
With no income from crowds and betting shops possibly
remaining closed, there will be a greater reliance on the Levy
Board for funding, so fixtures are likely to be limited and prize
money impacted. The constraint on meetings means it is likely
"not all racecourses will be able to race behind closed doors or
meet specific criteria around risk mitigation."
Field sizes will need to be restricted to support the logistics of
social distancing on a raceday and to minimise the risk of
incident. However, the BHA is aiming for "a standard mix of
handicaps and weight-for-age races for all horses," but it
believes "field sizes will need to be restricted to support the
logistics of social distancing on a raceday and to minimise the
risk of incident".
Such measures will limit early opportunities to race, but more
divisions of races could be run, while handicaps could have
non-standard rating bands and be open to horses who have had
just two starts. Cont. p3

British Classics Provisionally Moved to June Cont.
Some maiden races may be staged for unrated horses who
have been eliminated from standard novice and maiden events.
Jumps racing is currently scheduled to recommence on July 1
and the BHA is planning to base those fixtures on the original
programme book, although "trainers are currently being asked
for details of the horses they expect to have ready to run at that
time so that appropriate revisions to the programme can be
made."
ARQANA SUMMER SALE MOVED TO LATE JULY Following the Saturday morning announcement that Goffs UK
and Arqana will combine to hold an Irish breeze-up, the latter
sales company released new dates for the Arqana Summer Sale,
which will now be held in late July. Originally slated for June 29-
July 1, the mixed Flat and National Hunt sale is now scheduled
for the week beginning July 20, due to the ongoing COVID-19
pandemic. Closing dates to enter will be announced at a later
time.
KEATLEY POSITIVE ON NEW BEGINNINGSBy Tom Frary
Four years ago next month, The Curragh was reverberating
with the shock of seeing Ballydoyle=s luminary Minding (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) narrowly denied in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas.
Carrying out the upset was the diminutive Jet Setting (Ire) (Fast
Company {Ire}) sporting the colours of the barely-known
Equinegrowthpartners Syndicate and trained by the little-known
Adrian Keatley. Ditched from the Richard Hannon stable for just
12,000gns at the Tattersalls Autumn Sale the previous October,
she was raised from an official rating of just 85 by her Kildare-
born and raised trainer and ended up the property of the China
Horse Club for ,1.3 million less than eight months later.
Despite that flourish of headline-grabbing success just two
years into his training career at The Curragh, Keatley saw
fortune largely evade him. Bar the encouraging trajectory of the
Hong Kong-bound London Icon (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus})--who was to
be renamed Classic Beauty--in 2017 and 2018, mostly the horses
and more importantly the bigger owners failed to materialise.
AJet Setting was a second-hand filly bought for extremely small
money and she was kind of a miracle,@ Keatley said on reflection
this week. AThey don=t tend to happen twice and unfortunately
the syndicate we had didn=t want to buy the better types of
yearling the next autumn and that was basically it. A lot of the
owners and trainers in Ireland have significant financial strength
behind them and for me, that client wasn=t there.@ Cont. p4

Adrian Keatley had two jumps winners this winter before racing
was shut down | Racing Post
Keatley Cont.
Keatley is now based in the historic training centre of Malton
in North Yorkshire, with a minor string including two jumps
winners from his first two runners before the COVID-19
lockdown was implemented. He offered an insight into the
current situation in his profession.
ALuckily for me, I don=t have major overheads so on a personal
note I=m not too worried, but we=re all obviously hoping that the
situation can become clear at the end of this month. If it
doesn=t, things could change in a lot of people=s businesses,@ he
states. AWe just have to stay positive and be ready for whatever
we are asked to do. It=s very unsettling times full of sad news, so
we can hold our excitement.@
Overall, the dual-purpose handler who had spent his formative
period with Francis Flood, Dermot Weld, Oliver Kiernan and
Chris Waller, is content with his lot as he approaches a new
phase of his career.
AWe moved over after Christmas and couldn=t have got off to a
better start before everything stopped, but racing isn=t life or
death,@ he adds. AI have a career in sport and am very lucky and
very privileged. There are lots of opportunities here and I had to
say to myself that maybe Ireland wasn=t the place for me. I read
an interview with Mick Kinane last year and he was talking
about how you had to position yourself outside of your comfort
zone to improve yourself and that applies to all walks of life.@
Keatley is geared up for what will be a restart in more ways
than one. AWe have an exciting syndicate that was ready to shop
at the breeze-ups and hopefully that will still be there when it
comes,@ he says.
AI=m surrounded by good people and when we get the stock in
the door, I=m confident that I can prove myself again doing
things a little bit differently. I was young enough to be able to
come over here and rejuvenate my career and we have big
plans in the pipeline.@

My Animals and Other Family
By Clare Balding
Once I have found a book that
captures my attention I become a
compulsive reader who will only put
the book down to eat a meal or sleep,
until it ends. One such book was My
Animals and Other Family.
My family had initially taken it in
turns to read the book while I waited
impatiently for my opportunity to
steal the book and leaf through its
pages. I had watched Clare Balding present racing on the BBC
many times and she was and is someone I look up to.
Balding is open, honest and compelling in her memoir and
while I am not saying that I used to spend some of my youth
pretending to be an animal of some sort, I found in her story a
certain relatability. As an aspiring presenter I took particular
interest in how she forged a career in media and, of course, the
odd story about The Queen and the wonderful horses that lived
in her back garden certainly didn=t deter this reader.
Balding shares vulnerabilities in this story and perhaps its
greatest triumph is the homage she pays to the animals that
shaped her childhood and taught her so much.
Each of us owe something to our four-legged companions and
right now perhaps this book is the perfect escape we all need.

COOLMORE TO STAND MG1SW KING=S
LEGACY Coolmore Australia has purchased a major share in Saturday=s
G1 Champagne S. hero King=s Legacy (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice
{Aus}BBreakfast in Bed {Aus}, by Hussonet) and will stand the
$1.4-million Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling colt at their
Jerrys Plains operation upon his retirement from racing, the stud
announced. A winner of the 1400-metre G1 ATC Sires Produce S.
a fortnight ago, the Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Australia-bred
also scored in the G3 Magic Millions B.J. McLachlan S. in
December for trainers Peter and Paul Snowden and has earned
north of $400,000 in five starts.
Coolmore Australia boss Tom Magnier said, AWe are very
excited to secure King=s Legacy for Coolmore. I see him as the
best stallion prospect ever produced by champion stallion
Redoute=s Choice and we just had to have him. He is an
incredible physical specimen, as befits a $1.4-million yearling
and boasts a wonderful, world-class pedigree. Importantly, his
racetrack performance completes the package, being a dual 2-
year-old Group 1 winner with only upside to come. He comes
from one of the best families in Australia, featuring high level
stallions in Not A Single Doubt and Snippets plus a host of other
top horses.A
Purchased out of the Gold Coast sale by James Harron
Bloodstock for a syndicate of owners, the son of the seven-time
winner and MSP Breakfast in Bed will race for the existing
owners in partnership with Coolmore going forward. One of 38
Group 1 winners for his late Arrowfield Stud sire, King=s Legacy is
out of a half-sister to G1 Flight S. heroine Oohood (Aus) (I Am
Invincible {Aus}). His third dam foaled Group 1 sire Not a Single
Doubt (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}), as well as the dam of G1
Golden Slipper/G1 Blue Diamond S. runner-up Zizou (Aus)

KING'S LEGACY WINS AGAIN,COOLMORE BUYS IN
By Paul Vettise
Magic Millions= Group 1 domination of the 2-year-old division
this season rolled on at Randwick where King=s Legacy
(Redoute=s Choice) doubled his personal tally when victorious in
the Moet & Chandon Champagne S. It was also announced that
Coolmore has bought into the winner and will stand him at stud
at the end of his racing career.
For jockey Hugh Bowman, King=s Legacy provided him with a
clean autumn sweep of the juvenile Triple Crown Series having
won the G1 ATC Sires= Produce S. on the colt, after guiding
Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) to Golden Slipper S. glory.
Bowman also announced that the exciting dual Group
1-winner would be joining the Coolmore roster at the
completion of his racing career, with the global powerhouse
continuing their considerable investment in its Australian
operation by buying into King's Legacy.
It was soon confirmed by Tom Magnier, who thanked the
ownership group for the opportunity to buy into the only
Redoute's Choice colt to win two Group 1 races as a juvenile.
"We are so thankful to James Harron and his racing partners
for giving us the opportunity to become involved in King's
Legacy," said Magnier. "They are a wonderful group of owners
who will give him great support at stud when he retired to
Coolmore he is a particularly good looking horse with a great
pedigree. He is a very exciting proposition for us."
Magical Juveniles The win of King's Legacy completed a clean sweep of
2-year-old Group 1 races for auction house Magic Millions, while
second place Glenfiddich (Fatsnet Rock) was also sold at the
Gold Coast. Magic Millions had previously celebrated the first six
home in the G1 Golden Slipper S. and trifecta in the G1 Inglis
Sires'.
Slipper hero Farnan had been purchased out of Magic Millions=
Gold Coast ring by Aquis Farm and Phoenix Thoroughbreds for
$550,000 with the youngster offered by Vinery Stud.
The Group 1 ball had started rolling for the Queensland
auction company with the Blue Diamond S. winner Tagaloa (Lord
Kanaloa {Jpn}), a $300,000 buy for trainers Trent Busuttin and
Natalie Young when the colt was offered by Arrowfield Stud.
King=s Legacy was the most expensive of the Magic Millions
graduates with James Harron Bloodstock having the final say at
$1.4 million on the colt offered by breeder Segenhoe Stud.
ATo have sold three individual Group 1-winning colts is an
enormous effort and that=s not to mention Away Game.
Arguably, we=ve sold the best four 2-year-olds in the country,@
Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.
Away Game was a $425,000 Gold Coast purchase for Kerri
Radcliffe Bloodstock out of Mill Park Stud=s draft and has so far
won the G2 Percy Sykes S., the G3 Widden S. and finished
runner-up in the Golden Slipper. She has now been set for the
G1 Robert Sangster S.
AIt=s been complete domination for us. It=s very difficult for
Magic Millions to win a Blue Diamond, it=s a race we=ve missed
most years,@ Bowditch said. AIt=s great to see these blue-chip
horses winning these races and these quality youngsters are
bought with a dream in mind and it=s all come to fruition.@
Praise All Round for Beautifully Bred Colt The in-form Bowman had King=s Legacy within sight of the
leaders before he peeled wide before the turn and came with an
undeniable finish to down the pacemaker Glenfiddich with Ole
Kirk (Written Tycoon) back in third.
AHe=s an exceptional colt. He=s one of the best colts of his
generation in the country and I can only see him improving.@
Bowman is expecting King=s Legacy to be a potent force to be
reckoned in the new season.
AI=m not going to start doing the race programming of horses,
but you=d think he=d be a Golden Rose-Caulfield Guineas type of
horse,@ he said.

Dan Himbrechts/AAP Photos
AThe way he attacked the line this afternoon was exceptional,
it was a testing mile and he was able to sit handy and adapt as
the pace changed,@ added Bowman. AHe=s the full package and
hitting his strips as an autumn 2-year-old. You can see him
developing physically, he=s already mentally all there and very
exciting what lies ahead.@
Co-trainer Peter Snowden concurred and praised Bowman for
the role he has had to play.
AIt was a good result and a peach of a ride. He travelled so well
and quickened nicely and it=s only the start of what you=re going
to see as a 3-year-old,@ he said. AHe is a horse that will train on,
he=s got a lot of substance and quality about him. We always
thought these [Group 1s] were the two races that would suit
him and we got that right.
AHe=s a nice colt and will only get better at three, he=s doing it
all on raw ability. He=s got the right attitude, a good turn of foot
and he relaxes really well. They are big assets to have and he=s a
quality colt, we=ll see a lot more of him later on.@
Pedigree Notes: King=s Legacy was bred by Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Australia
Pty Ltd, and was sold through their draft on the Gold Coast. He is
one of 38 individual Group 1 winners for his late sire Redoute=s
Choice. He is also the champion stallion=s second Champagne S.
winner, following on from Samantha Miss in 2008.
King=s Legacy is out of Breakfast In Bed (Hussonet {USA}), who
won seven races and placed in the Listed Nudgee H., Just Now
H. and the Gai Waterhouse Classic. Breakfast In Bed is a
half-sister to Oohood (I Am Invincible), the winner of the G1
Flight S. and placegetter in the G1 Golden Slipper, Sires= Produce
S., Caulfield Guineas and Blue Diamond. Breakfast In Bed=s dam
Bella Sunday (Sunday Silence {USA}) is a half-sister to the stakes
winner and excellent sire Not A Single Doubt.
Their dam Singles Bar (Rory=s Jester) is dam or granddam of
more than half a dozen stakes performers, including the Golden
Slipper placegetter and sire Zizou.
Both of Breakfast In Bed=s two named foals have been
winners. Three-year-old filly Do Not Disturb (Fastnet Rock) has
won two races to date over 1100 metres and 1400 metres.
Breakfast In Bed has a yearling filly by Redoute=s Choice, and she
produced another filly by I Am Invincible in the spring of 2019.
She was then served by Pierro.

TOFANE TAKES GROUP 1By TDN AusNZ
A breakthrough season for Tofane (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ})
reached a Group 1 pinnacle in Saturday=s All Aged S. at
Randwick.

Opie Bosson & Tofane | Dan Himbrechts/AAP Photos
The Michael Moroney-trained 4-year-old started this season in
August in BM78 grade. She stepped up to stakes class later in
the spring and won the G3 Northwood Plume S. and Begonia
Belle S., and her rise continued into the autumn with a close
Group 1 placing in The Galaxy at Rosehill.
But Saturday was the one her connections desperately
wanted. Ridden by Kiwi jockey Opie Bosson, Tofane settled in
sixth spot as White Moss (Mossman) led the field up to the
home turn. The defending All Aged S. champion Pierata (Pierro)
cruised into contention in the straight and was seemingly set for
a Group 1-winning career swansong, but then Tofane joined in
and spoiled the party. Tofane drew up on Pierata=s outside and
the two fought a stirring battle to the finish, and it was Tofane
who prevailed by a nose in a tight photo.
The mare races in the colours of Rupert Legh, who shares
ownership with many others including Ballymore Stables, Wright
Racing, Werrett Bloodstock and Gee Gee Equine Ltd. Tofane has
had 14 starts for five wins, three placings and more than
$800,000 in stakes.
Pedigree Notes: Tofane was bred by Gordon Cunningham, the founder and
owner of respected New Zealand nursery Curraghmore. She was
bought privately by Ballymore Stables. She is by young Waikato
Stud stallion Ocean Park (NZ), a Cox Plate winner who has
become an excellent source of winners at stud with 133 winners
from 218 runners. Ocean Park sired his first Group 1 winner
earlier this season when Kolding (NZ) won the Epsom H. at
Randwick, and that runner later won the $7.5-million Golden
Eagle. His other progeny include Group 2 winner Oceanex (NZ)
and Group 1 placed Star Of The Seas (NZ).
Tofane is the first foal to race out of Baggy Green (Galileo
{Ire}).
A winner herself, Baggy Green is a three-quarter sister to this
season=s Group 1-winning 3-year-old filly Funstar (Adelaide {Ire})
and a half-sister to G1 Queensland Oaks winner Youngstar (High
Chaparral {Ire}).
The second dam is User Friendly (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}), who
won eight races including the G1 Epsom Oaks, Irish Oaks,
Yorkshire Oaks, St Leger and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. She
produced eight winners from 10 foals to race including Group 3
winner Downtown (Ire) (Danehill {USA}).
Since Tofane was born in 2015, Baggy Green has produced No
Compromise (NZ) (Pins) in 2016 and Bradman (NZ) (Pins) in
2017. They have each raced once. She had another colt by Pins
in 2017 and a colt by Reliable Man (GB) in 2018. She returned to
Ocean Park last spring. The Pins colts have sold for NZ$40,000
and NZ$85,000 in Book 1 of the New Zealand Bloodstock
National Yearling Sale at Karaka in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

CE CE COLLARS >CANDY= INAPPLE BLOSSOM THRILLER
by Alan Carasso
With the end of the championship meet at Gulfstream Park,
Oaklawn Park and its Racing Festival of the South is, for all
intents and purposes, the current focal point of Thoroughbred
racing in North America in the midst of the coronavirus
pandemic.
Saturday=s GI Apple Blossom H., one of two top-level events
staged at Arkansas=s spa meeting, attracted an incredibly diverse
group of main-track distaffers, including California raiders Ollie=s
Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) and Ce Ce (Elusive Quality), who book-
ended the 14-strong field when gates were drawn Wednesday.
Despite enterprising tactics from the inside by Joel Rosario
aboard Ollie=s Candy, Bo Hirsch homebred Ce Ce was the
recipient of an equally savvy ride from Victor Espinoza from gate
14 and was along in the dying strides to take it by a short head.
Point of Honor (Curlin), winner of last year=s GII Black-Eyed
Susan S. and multiple Grade I-placed thereafter, and Street
Band (Istan), whose sophomore season was highlighted by a
victory in the GI Cotillion S., rallied from well back and finished
heads apart in third and fourth, respectively.
AThat was great,@ winning trainer Michael McCarthy said. AWe
were able to sit in a perfect spot, three to four lengths off of
them. I=m OK with it now. Had the photo been the other way, I
probably wouldn=t have been OK with it.@ Cont. p3
DECISION ON LIVE RACING AT SANTA ANITA
DUE NEXT WEEK by Dan Ross
Santa Anita executives, including The Stronach Group (TSG)
chairman and president Belinda Stronach, held an online
meeting Thursday with Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn
Barger and other officials about a possible resumption of live
racing at Santa Anita.
According to TSG chief strategy officer Aidan Butler, an official
decision on the matter is expected early next week.
AWe walked them through it, and then I presented them the
plan. As positive as I think it could be. [Barger] seems very
understanding--she wants to work with us,@ said Butler, about
the meeting. A[Barger is] taking the plan to the doctors that be,
and we=re awaiting a decision.@

The two California fillies bracketed the Apple Blossom field | Coady
Ce Ce (yellow cap) sets her sights on Ollie=s Candy (shadow roll) as
Serengeti Empress tries to fight on in between them | Coady
Apple Blossom H. cont. from p1
While favored Serengeti Empress (Alternation) and Florida
shipper Cookie Dough (Brethren) figured to go a strong gallop
up front, the pace was further fueled by Ollie=s Candy, who was
somewhat surprisingly not only ridden for speed from the inside
stall, but was asked to lead the Apple Blossom field. That
mission was accomplished, but it took an opening quarter in an
almost-suicidal :22.20 to accomplish and things didn=t get
materially easier after a half-mile in :45.51. For her part, Ce Ce
displayed enough early speed to gain a forward position and she
was already into a ground-saving fifth rounding the first turn and
held that spot down the back. Angled out into about the five
path and in and out of the wake of Serengeti Empress, Ce Ce
improved a spot leaving the three-eighths, but Ollie=s Candy
kicked further in front, despite a six-furlong split of 1:10.27. Well
clear into the final furlong, Ollie=s Candy kept digging for all she
had, but Ce Ce took aim on her entering the final 100 yards and
was along in time. The disappointment of the race was Serengeti
Empress, who remained a forward factor into the final furlong
and a half, but gave way readily from there to finish a well-
beaten 11th.
AThe idea was to break sharp,@ said Espinoza, who won the
2017 Apple Blossom aboard Stellar Wind (Curlin) for Ollie=s
Candy=s trainer John Sadler. AI had to use my brains a little to not
go into the first turn too wide. I thought if I could hit the turn
four or five wide, then I=m in good shape. I knew if she was good
enough, she=d win the race, so I encouraged her out of the gate
and put her in a good position. I hit the first turn, three or four
wide and it was perfect. I was smiling because it was exactly
what I wanted.@
A big-figure debut winner at Santa Anita 53 weeks ago, Ce Ce
earned a 97 Beyer when runner-up to subsequent GIII L.A.
Woman S. winner Lady Ninja (Majesticperfection) in a May 11
allowance ahead of a respectable fourth to >TDN Rising Star=
Guarana (Ghostzapper) in the GI Acorn S. the following month.
Returning from an injury-enforced absence to romp home in a
Feb. 17 Santa Anita allowance, she tried two turns for the first
time in the Mar. 14 GI Beholder Mile and rolled right past
>Rising Star= Hard Not To Love (Hard Spun) for a 3 1/4-length
success.
Pedigree Notes:
A half-sister to 2009 Arkansas Derby--then a Grade II--winner
Papa Clem (Smart Strike), Ce Ce is one of 17 Grade I winners for
her late sire and, in addition to Papa Clem, she is a half-sister to
the stakes-placed dam of MGSW Hot Springs (Uncle Mo). Ce
Ce=s own dam Miss Houdini took the 2002 GI Del Mar Debutante
and is a daughter of 1991 GI Hollywood Starlet S. winner
Magical Maiden, who also produced the dam of G2 King George
S. hero and G1 Prix de l=Abbaye third place-getter Moviesta
(Hard Spun). Miss Houdini is also responsible for the once-raced
3-year-old gelding Riggins (Liam=s Map) and a yearling colt by
American Pharoah. She was bred back to Street Sense last term.

Santa Anita cont. from p1
Prior to Thursday=s meeting, it was expected that Santa Anita
management would meet with the department of public health
on Saturday, Apr. 18. According to Butler, Barger=s office
reached out Thursday to schedule a meeting the same day.
AThat=s a little more of a positive as well,@ he said.
The delay in formally announcing Thursday=s meeting was an
effort to circumvent possible pressure from animal rights
groups, who have lobbied health officials to suspend live racing
at Santa Anita, Butler explained.
AThe more it was pointed to [Saturday], I had an inkling that
the animal rights people would hot up and try to hit it
[Saturday],@ said Butler. AI jumped the gun and got in there
quickly.@
The details of the plan Santa Anita management presented to
county officials are outlined in a letter--from Butler to a variety
of county officials--obtained by the Paulick Report. It includes a
protocol requiring all jockeys involved in training or racing to
relocate to onsite housing to live within a self-contained
community.
AThis relocation protocol will go one step further by adding a
requirement for an independent, third-party Los Angeles County
Health Officer to provide supervision and monitoring, paid for
by Santa Anita Park,@ the letter states.
According to Butler, the fact that the plan was created in
collaboration with David Seftel, medical director at Golden Gate
Fields, an infectious disease expert and current member of
Stanford University=s COVID-19 task force, will further bolster
the track=s argument. AThis is a science-based approach,@ said
Butler. AIt=s a really good plan.@
The letter, which was presented to officials after Thursday=s
meeting, said Butler, also enumerates several key
considerations, including how racing would remain closed to the
public, that the track is a self-contained community and that a
suspension of live racing could create a possible Ahumanitarian
and horse welfare crisis.@
TDN recently outlined the fragility of racing=s infrastructure in
California without the sustained income from live racing, and its
possible impacts on a variety of services, like backstretch worker
healthcare and the state=s retired racehorse program.
Live racing at Santa Anita was formally cancelled on March 5.
Since then, the track has remained open for morning training,
but with tight restrictions in place as to access. TSG=s sister track
in California, Golden Gate Fields, has also suspended live racing.
However, evening racing continues at Los Alamitos in Long
Beach, California.
WHITMORE TRIPLES-UP IN COUNT FLEET

Count Fleet Sprint H. cont.
In 13 previous trips to the races at Oaklawn Park, Whitmore
(Pleasantly Perfect) had never finished out of the top three,
including a third-place effort to future GI Belmont S. hero
Creator (Tapit) in the GI Arkansas Derby some four Aprils ago.
Since reinvented as a top sprinter--not entirely shocking given
that he won his first seven starts going one turn--the popular 7-
year-old made history Saturday in Hot Springs, withstanding a
run from last by Flagstaff (Speightstown) to land the GIII Count
Fleet Sprint H. for the third time in four years. His lone defeat in
the race came at the hooves of a buzzsaw future Eclipse Award
winner named Mitole (Eskendereya) 12 months back.
Drawn nine in a Grade I-quality field, Whitmore hit the ground
running and settled in about sixth position, but reasonably
handy to the pace, disputed by the fleet-footed Bobby=s Wicked
One (Speightstown) underneath Share the Upside (Maclean=s
Music), who lowered Whitmore=s colors in the King Cotton S. on
each horse=s seasonal debut Feb. 8. >TDN Rising Star= Hidden
Scroll (Hard Spun), making his return to graded company,
chased the dueling leaders three deep through enervating
fractions and was in position to have the first crack at Share the
Upside at the quarter pole, as Bobby=s Wicked One was one of
the first beaten. The half-mile was up in a taxing :44.67, but
Whitmore rolled up three wide into the lane with a couple of
right-handers to his hind quarters, was firmly in front passing
the eighth pole and held the fast-finishing Flagstaff safe. Manny
Wah (Will Take Charge) skimmed the rail and was just
outfinished for the place spot.
AI=m proud for him,@ said winning trainer Ron Moquett. AI=m
noticing lately people saying, >The great= and >legendary.= People
that are saying that don=t throw around those words. To me,
he=s been that. But it=s so cool to see this horse that has so many
people that love him and follow him to be able to do what he
does and to make a lot of people that happy.@
The conditioner added, AI wanted him to be on the inside, but
he broke so well that he [jockey] Joe [Talamo] had him in a
position to where he couldYand Whitmore=s always going to
argue with whatever you want. He just has that personality. He
argues all the time. He has tried to get out. Sometimes, he tries
to get in. But, he really just wants to mess with the rider. The
jockey just took a hold and let him do what he wanted to do.
Then, whenever you ask him, he did what he=s supposed to do.
It was so awesome.@
A very good third to Mitole in the GI Breeders= Cup Sprint last
November, Whitmore stretched out for the GI Cigar Mile H. Dec.
7, but was a no-factor seventh to Maximum Security (New
Year=s Day). He resumed for the first time in his career in the
King Cotton before besting Mr. Jagermeister (Atta Boy Roy) to
win the Hot Springs S. for the fourth straight season Mar. 7.
Pedigree Notes:
Whitmore is the most accomplished runner for his
GI Breeders= Cup- and G1 Dubai World Cup-winning sire, a
$725,000 graduate of the 1999 Keeneland September sale who
stood at Lane=s End from 2005 through 2014 before being sold
to Turkey to continue his stallion career. From two crops to race
in that country, he is the sire of 25 winners, two at stakes level.
Melody=s Spirit is the dam of a juvenile colt by Liam=s Map who
cost $190,000 at KEESEP last fall and a yearling colt by Arrogate.

HONOR CODE GETS FIRST JAPANESE
WINNER by Alan Carasso
Lane=s End Farm=s Honor Code (A.P. Indy--Serena=s Cat, by
Storm Cat) was represented by his first Japanese winner when
the U.S.-conceived Queen=s V V (Jpn) graduated at second
asking in Saturday=s first race at Hanshin Racecourse.
Sent off the narrow second choice at odds of 23-10 to improve
off a courageous fourth on course-and-trip debut Dec. 15, the
registered black filly landed in midfield and about 10 lengths off
the pace set by Bateau du Ciel (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}). The
latter took the field into the lane and Queen=s V V looked to
have it all to do to bridge a six-length deficit entering the final
300 meters, but she stayed on determinedly and nabbed the
front-runner as the wire loomed.
Queen=s V V, her sire=s lone starter in Japan to date, is a
daughter of V V Goodnight (Midnight Lute), runner-up in the
2014 GIII Pucker Up S. while under the care of Tom Proctor, and
sold carrying this filly in utero for $360,000 from James Keogh=s
Grovendale consignment at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale.
V V Goodnight is a half-sister to Grade III-winning turfer Gleam
of Hope (City Zip) and the stakes-winning Forest Princess
(Hansel).
Carrying the A.P. Indy cross over Quiet American responsible
for the likes of champion Bernardini, Queen=s V V is a half-sister
to a 2-year-old filly by Screen Hero (Jpn)--sire of 2015 Japanese
Horse of the Year Maurice (Jpn)--and a yearling colt by Yoshida
(Jpn)=s sire Heart=s Cry (Jpn). V V Goodnight was bred to the
latter last season.
Honor Code=s North American winners include GIII Withers S.
hero Max Player and the graded-placed duo of Honor A. P. and
Roadrunner=s Honor.
OKLAHOMA HORSE RACING COMMISSION
SUSPENDS SOONER 6IX WAGER The Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission (OHRC) has
suspended the Sooner 6ix wager until further notice and all
wagers on the Sooner 6ix placed Friday were to be refunded,
according to a tweet from Remington Park.
The decision stems from Remington=s failure to pay out the
Sooner 6ix jackpot Apr. 10 to horseplayer Jeff Arthur, who
constructed what appeared to be a unique winning sequence
using 2,016 combinations ($403.20 ticket cost) Apr. 10.
Remington Park claimed that a dead-heat created a second
winning ticket, thus nullifying the jackpot. Arthur instead was
credited with consolation payoffs totaling $8,920, the entire
amount in the minor pool.
Arthur was put in touch with the Thoroughbred Idea
Foundation (TIF) earlier this week and wished that the situation
be made public. Read more from Friday=s TDN.

Racing is quite different in that we charge people to become
informed to make an investment/wagering decision. Despite all
of the problems with that very statement, if we don't even try
this now, temporarily, then what hope is there for the future?
Here is our plea to Equibase (and The Jockey Club and
Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America):
In light of our publication on Friday, outlining the broken
financial model of racing which is now exposed to its most dire
extent following the imposed shutdowns of casinos and
elimination of on-track betting, it should be clear that there is an
absolute need to take every measure to increase handle.
It should not matter who is pushing this idea--we are all in this
together, right? Shouldn't all elements of our industry want the
best possible situation, at least for now, for all of our horsemen
and the associated downstream impact?
Offer free past performances for all tracks running now and
until the doors open again, and go back to charging once things
go back to "normal." We just want horsemen that are still racing
to have the best shot at paying their bills. Equibase should too.
We can work together on better long-term solutions for data
availability in racing after the COVID-19 pandemic passes. But
for now, just give existing, and potential customers, free, basic
past performances, let them bet and let=s ensure those we
maximize whatever revenues betting can generate, even despite
the incredibly flawed business model we all need to fix
concurrently.
The terms >best= and >favorite= are typically two subjective
concepts when it comes the Thoroughbred racehorse. The TDN's
Gary King reached out to key players from different facets of the
industry to hear their thoughts. Email Gary King
([email protected]) to have your say.
SUE FINLEY, TDN
I was a terrible hotwalker. In fairness, I didn=t grow up around
horses; I grew up going to the track. And by the time I got my
first full-time job in racing in the NYRA press box, I had seen
enough people get thrown, trampled and seriously injured that
my fear didn=t seem irrational. It just seemed like good common
sense.
But when I was 22 years old, I went to Woody Stephens and
asked him for a job in his barn at Belmont. He said that he paid
his staff on Friday, which meant that several people might not
show up on Saturday, and that he could use me on weekends to
fill that gap. I was making $13,000 a year at NYRA, or $160 a
week take-home, and after my rent, car payment and student
loans, I had $15 a week to live on. So the $27 he was going to
pay me per weekend actually represented a dramatic lifestyle
change for me in that I could now afford food. (Or some food,
anyway.)
The first horse they gave me to walk was Soli, by Alydar out of
the Grade II winner Nicosia. She was bred by Mill Ridge Farm
had just broken her maiden at this point, but they had high
expectations for her, and when Sandy Bruno found out that I
had no experience, she glared at the person who had handed

me the horse, took her back, and sent me over to Billy Badgett=s
barn, where Woody=s 2-year-olds were kept. They told me to
take out a Henryk deKwiatkowski filly who hadn=t been to the
track in two weeks and who constantly spun around in circles as
I tried to walk her around the barn. I had no idea how to stop
her from doing this, and I can still see Billy=s face, which
registered a mix of consternation and resignation as he watched
me walking around the shedrow with her wheeling and me
straightening her out. Over and over.
Over the next couple of months, I would be stepped on,
smashed into water buckets, and dragged out of the barn (by
the future Northview stallion Two Punch.) I think it was a relief
to everyone when the stable shipped to Saratoga, and my real
job left me too busy to work at the barn any more.
Still, that winter, in early 1986, I decided to have another go at
it, and asked John Hertler for a job, with similar results. The
horses in the barn were older, tougher veterans who pretty
much pushed me around at will, and the cold weather had them
even more on their toes than normal.
But on Apr. 1, we got in our shipment of 2-year-olds, and
included in the bunch was a colt by Seattle Slew out of the
Grade I winner Weber City Miss. He was bred by Joe Allen, and
owned by Allen and Tayhill Stable. His name was Slew City Slew.
Here, finally, was a horse for me. He was not only small, but he
was quiet. Maybe he was exhausted. He would plod tranquilly
around the shedrow with me, taking a deep sigh and resting his
head on my shoulder when we would stop walking. I was in love.
He was bomb-proof. Barking dogs, spooked horses, loud noises;
nothing startled him. I loved him. I started extending our time
together every day, walking him 45 minutes, then a hour. AHow
long have you had him out?@ the foreman, Cathy Riccio, would
ask me, sensing it was more than the allotted 30 minutes.
ATwenty minutes,@ I=d say. I=d hose him, and ice him (neither of
which he required), while sitting contentedly in front of his stall,
holding the shank. Working with him was the only time I actually
felt confident doing the job.
He never raced while I worked at the barn, but finished third-
from-last and next-to-last in his two starts at Saratoga that
summer. Eventually, he was given to Wayne Lukas, who
developed him into a superstar, a multiple Grade I winner who
earned over a million dollars and became a track-record setter.
(This was in the day when I found Wayne Lukas very
intimidating, so I marveled at him from afar.)
After a long stud career at Airdrie, he died in 2013 at the age
of 29, and even now, reading Brereton Jones=s words at the time
brings a lump to my throat. Cont. p9

Who=s Your Favorite Horse cont.
"Slew will be missed by everybody here at Airdrie as he was
with us for so long and was such a wonderful character," he
said. "His professionalism and manners around the breeding
shed were second to none. He had such a kind nature that
whenever we had visitors to the farm, he was the type of horse
you could let young children pet and feed and he would be ever
so nice to them."
I knew exactly what he meant. For me, he wasn=t just the best
horse I ever worked with, but the kindest. He was the horse who
allowed me to know horses as animals--not the version of them
we see from the press box, or write about in the paper. He
taught me not be afraid of them, and that raised properly with
respect and kindness, they=re kind and giving, and form
remarkable human bonds.
I have always loved the sport of horse racing, but to this day, I
owe my love of horses to my favorite horse, Slew City Slew.
