J esus provides assurance of the signifi- cance of the relationship between a man and a woman. This relationship is the jew- el of all other interactions between human- ity and the world. It is a relationship that completes God’s creation related to the first man. God gives Adam who Adam alone can appreciate, that is, the woman, Eve. Let us recognize that our day is one when it is a little intimidating to involve oneself in discussion about men and wom- en, and especially about the intimacy of their relationship. The saving truth is that there is no one of us who exists today with- out the relationships between men and women. There is no baby boy nor baby girl born without what a man provides and what a woman provides, the seed and the egg. The relationship between a man and woman is to be beautiful; it is to be awe- inspiring; it is to be spectacular; nothing like it in the world. Observers of the rela- tionship are to view it as so alluring that they desire, they long for, they crave to have the relationship themselves. It is to be seen as the most fulfilling, most comforta- ble, most peaceful opportunity afforded a man and a woman. God created this rela- tionship to fill a need Adam obviously had. God observed that it was not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:18). Adam had the best address humanity has ever known, the garden of Eden. Adam had work that was fulfilling, tilling the ground. Adam had authority over other created beings, land, water, and sky inhabitants. Adam had enough food to sustain him, the pro- duction of the trees. According to the Lord God, however, Adam was not in the best situation. Though surrounded by the creat- ed works of God’s hand, the waters teem- ing with life, the ground inhabited by ani- mals, the skies as the domain for flying creatures, though all of this, Adam was alone. And the Lord God said that this was not good. In the beginning, a man achieved ful- fillment only when a woman was present- ed to him. Because the Lord God saw that it was not good for man to be alone, He stated, “I will make him a help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18). That is, a mate that is suitable for who he is. And God made sure Adam understood that there was nothing in present creation that suited him (Genesis 2:19). Note that God brought every animal to Adam (Genesis 2:19). And among no created creatures was there a suitable mate for him. When there was no suitable mate found for Adam, God caused a deep sleep to fall on him. It was at this time that God shaped and fashioned a woman from a rib taken from Adam. At Adam’s awakening, the woman was brought to him (Genesis 2:22). It is amazing that in these early days of man’s existence, God does not send Adam out looking for a mate. Every possi- ble mate is brought to him. And at the most crucial moment to date in the garden of Eden, the woman is brought to the man. The woman is brought to the man. And all should understand, even in our day, the mate suitable for a man is the woman. There is no animal, though there are some who marry such today. There is no fish, nor bird, though these seem to fascinate quite a few. There is no creature similar to the man, of the same sex, that is suitable for him. What man needed, what fulfilled a man, what took away his loneli- ness, what raised the quality of his life, what made things good, what made him a better man, what satisfied God about him was the gift of the woman. Adam certainly agreed. When the woman was brought to Adam, he ex- claimed, “this is now!’ (Genesis 2:23). What was she? Adam said she was bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh. And he called her by a name that gave her a place fitting only for his mate. Her name identi- fies her partnership, relationship, and com- mitment to her. It is possible to miss the glee and the excitement of this event, reading it in Eng- lish. The Hebrew manifests heightened excitement. The woman brought emotion out of Adam that he had not to that point experienced. The woman brought a new appreciation for the creation out of Adam. The woman had Adam feeling what he had not felt before. In our language, his question to the rest of creation would be similar to the lyrics to Stevie Wonder’s once popular song, asking, “Isn’t she love- ly?” The song reflects on the birth of a child and asks, “Isn’t she lovely? Isn’t she wonderful? Isn’t she precious?” What God makes from the rib of Adam elicits the same set of questions. And expects the same answers. Yes, she is lovely. Yes, she is wonderful. Yes, she is precious. These are the conclusions men are to realize in rela- tion to their wives. Men still acknowledge that the woman who is bone of his bones, and flesh of his flesh makes him, enhances him, completes him. This is necessary for the marriage to work. This is needed before a man will leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife (Genesis 2:2425).

COMMENTARY CORNER: “ISN’T SHE LOVELY?” “And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said for this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh” (Matthew 19:4–5)?

J esus provides assurance of the signifi-cance of the relationship between a man

and a woman. This relationship is the jew-el of all other interactions between human-ity and the world. It is a relationship that completes God’s creation related to the first man. God gives Adam who Adam alone can appreciate, that is, the woman, Eve.

Let us recognize that our day is one when it is a little intimidating to involve oneself in discussion about men and wom-en, and especially about the intimacy of their relationship. The saving truth is that there is no one of us who exists today with-out the relationships between men and women. There is no baby boy nor baby girl born without what a man provides and what a woman provides, the seed and the egg.

The relationship between a man and woman is to be beautiful; it is to be awe-inspiring; it is to be spectacular; nothing like it in the world. Observers of the rela-tionship are to view it as so alluring that they desire, they long for, they crave to have the relationship themselves. It is to be seen as the most fulfilling, most comforta-ble, most peaceful opportunity afforded a man and a woman. God created this rela-tionship to fill a need Adam obviously had.

God observed that it was not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:18). Adam had the best address humanity has ever known, the garden of Eden. Adam had work that was fulfilling, tilling the ground. Adam had authority over other created beings, land, water, and sky inhabitants. Adam had enough food to sustain him, the pro-duction of the trees. According to the Lord God, however, Adam was not in the best situation. Though surrounded by the creat-

ed works of God’s hand, the waters teem-ing with life, the ground inhabited by ani-mals, the skies as the domain for flying creatures, though all of this, Adam was alone. And the Lord God said that this was not good.

In the beginning, a man achieved ful-fillment only when a woman was present-ed to him.

Every possi-ble mate is brought to him.

What man needed, what fulfilled a man, what took away his loneli-ness, what raised the quality of his life,

what made things good, what made him a better man, what satisfied God about him was the gift of the woman.

Adam certainly agreed. When the woman was brought to Adam, he ex-claimed, “this is now!’ (Genesis 2:23). What was she? Adam said she was bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh. And he called her by a name that gave her a place fitting only for his mate. Her name identi-fies her partnership, relationship, and com-mitment to her.

It is possible to miss the glee and the excitement of this event, reading it in Eng-lish. The Hebrew manifests heightened excitement. The woman brought emotion out of Adam that he had not to that point experienced. The woman brought a new appreciation for the creation out of Adam. The woman had Adam feeling what he had not felt before. In our language, his question to the rest of creation would be similar to the lyrics to Stevie Wonder’s once popular song, asking, “Isn’t she love-ly?”

The song reflects on the birth of a child and asks, “Isn’t she lovely? Isn’t she wonderful? Isn’t she precious?” What God makes from the rib of Adam elicits the same set of questions. And expects the same answers. Yes, she is lovely. Yes, she is wonderful. Yes, she is precious. These are the conclusions men are to realize in rela-tion to their wives.

Men still acknowledge that the woman who is bone of his bones, and flesh of his flesh makes him, enhances him, completes him. This is necessary for the marriage to work. This is needed before a man will leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife (Genesis 2:24–25).

PRAY THAT GOD LEADS US TO SOULS TO SAVE TODAY & THROUGH THIS WEEK

RESPONSIVE READING Titus 3:7–12

READER: That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

CHURCH: This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

READER: But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

CHURCH: A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;

READER: Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

UNISON: When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.

PRAYER Father in heaven, we believe in you. We ask that you ever give us the mind and strength to maintain good works as heirs according to the hope of eternal life. In the name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.

To be saved today, you must hear the gospel (Romans 10:17; Acts 15:7). You must believe the gospel that assures us salvation through Jesus who is the risen Lord (Romans 10:9, 10). You must be willing to turn your life over to God through repentance (Acts 17:30; Romans 2:4). Those willing to live for God through repentance are ready for confession (Romans 10:9,10). The person who confesses is baptized into Christ (Romans 6:3, 4; Galatians 3:27). In baptism, the believer is washed, sanctified, and justified (1 Corinthians 6:11). Christ saves the baptized person in baptism (1 Peter 3:21). If you believe that Jesus died for you and was resurrected, if you will repent and confess, then you can be baptized into Christ and be saved. Come to Jesus today!

COMMENTARY CORNER There is something more men must acknowledge. Just as much as the woman completes him, fulfills him, gives him sig-nificance, he is to lead in doing the same for her. In a marriage, the man has much to do with who his wife is for him. Is she seen as precious, as lovely, as wonderful, taken and created from one of his ribs? All men must learn from Jesus at this point.

The church in relationship to Jesus, is similar to the relationship between a hus-band and wife. Accordingly, Paul writes that husbands are to love their wives, even as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25).

In every facet of the church’s existence, Christ aims to make the church lovely, pre-cious, and wonderful. Paul provides under-standing of what Christ seeks to do. He writes, “That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrin-kle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27).

How does Christ achieve his goals? Paul writes that Christ gives himself for the church, that he sanctifies and cleanses it with the washing of water by the word (Ephesians 5:25–26). It is what Christ does for the church that results in the church being holy and without blemish. This is how the church obtains the status of loveli-ness.

In our day, it may be a lot to ask of men. That is, to work to have a lovely wife, not an embittered one. Work to have a respected wife, not disdained one. Work to have a happy wife, not a depressed one. Work to have a wife that causes heightened joy, incomparable excitement, satisfying peace. Life without criticism, disdain, accu-sation, humiliation, selfishness, and the horror of living with a man who does not see the loveliness of the woman he is with.

Christ would advise not to leave her, abandon her nor forsake her. Commit self to her. Give attention to her needs. Provide for her. Cherish her. Love her. And give your life for her. This is what Christ does for the church. This is what men must do to arrive at the question, “Isn’t she lovely?”
