Advanced Placement in Maryland Overview, 2017 • Maryland public school students took a total of 110,846 AP exams

• Students took about 1,360 more exams than last year • 58,981 students took at least one exam, with an average of 1.9 exams each • 46.5 percent of Maryland’s 2017 graduates took at least one AP exam

• The most popular subject areas are social studies (35,401 exams), science (30,734), and English (22,303)

• The exam pass rate was 63.1 percent (nat ion: 57.5 percent), an increase of 1.1 percentage points from 2016

• 31.2 percent of graduates passed at least one exam, the second-highest in the nat ion (nat ion: 22.8 percent)

• About one-third of districts require students enrolled in AP courses to take the AP exam to receive addit ional credit in the weighted GPA. The remaining districts encourage or expect students to take the exam, but it is not required to receive weighted credit for taking an AP course.

SAT in Maryland Overview, 2017 • 42,919 Maryland high school graduates took the SAT in 2017 • The average SAT score was 1060 (nation: 1060) • 48 percent of graduates who took the SAT met the math

benchmark, and 70 percent met the reading and writ ing benchmark

• Because of significant redesigns to the SAT test , t rend lines are not available
