Dear friends,

On December 8th—the Feast of the Immaculate Conception—the entire Catholic Church begins the Holy Year of Mercy. What a timely theme for our world that is so troubled because of the lack of mercy.

For the Year of Mercy, the parish has developed a calendar of events. We will print this calendar each week in the bulletin for your convenience so that you can experience God’s mercy in a pow-erful way this year and share God’s mercy with others.

A few ways that we will continuously be celebrating the Year of Mercy:

1. We will continue hearing Confessions 6 days a week. This Sacrament is the doorway to God’s Mer-cy. Try to celebrate this Sacrament more frequently this year. You can find the schedule of the hours for Confessions in the bulletin.

2. You will receive a Holy Card for the Year of Mercy. On one side of this card will be the prayer Hail Holy Queen that we will pray after every Mass during the Year of Mercy, and I would encourage you to pray at home. On the other side will be a list of the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. You shouldmemorize and practice these works of mercy during this holy year.

3. Attend the Advent Retreat, “Experience the Mercy of God,” on the evenings of Monday, December 14th and Tuesday, December 15th. The retreat will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. We will have ex-position of the Blessed Sacrament, a spiritual conference, followed by Eucharistic Adoration and Con-fessions until8:30 p.m.

Choosing to do these three activities things will take each one of us a long way into the embrace of God’s mercy. May God bless you.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Joseph Shea

Surf’s Up at St. Rose! Mr. John Sanders, school principal and surfing enthusiast,

has brought surfing to St. Rose! The surf program is anchored by a Science of Surfing elective class, open to students in grades 6-8, which meets on Fridays. Students in grades 6-8 can also be members of the school’s Surf Team, which competes in the Middle School Division of the Scholastic Surf Series against schools from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara. Also, the school developed a Surf-ing Club, which is open to all ages (parents, too!) and meets on weekends at various beaches. Members gain ocean knowledge, develop skills, and most importantly, share fellowship. You do not need to know how to surf to join the team or club; novices are en-couraged to participate.

“Kids learn what a huge difference there is between what they think they can achieve and what they actually can achieve,” Sanders says. “They face the moment-by-moment challenges that the ocean, weather conditions, and other surfers can bring. In surf-ing, as in life, you have to ‘take a few on the head’ to catch that wave, but when you do, it’s pure magic!”

On Saturday December 12 from 8:00 AM to Noon the Knights of Co-lumbus will be hosting

their quarterly blood drive in the park-ing lot of the parish hall. Our local blood bank United Blood Services will have bloodmobiles in the North parking lot for your convenience at this critical time of year.

Please help give the gift of life by call-ing Paul Friedeborn at 805-297-6473, UBS at 805-654-1600, or contact UBS online.

Why are some RCIA participants dismissed in the middle of the Mass?

This Sunday, at one of the morning Masses, those adults and children preparing to be baptized into the Catholic Church, and those preparing for full communion will be dismissed at the end of the Liturgy of the Word. This will continue each Sunday until Easter when, at the Easter Vigil, those who are ready will join us at the Table of the Eucharist for the first time. The parish is not sending them out because they are somehow “unworthy” to stay for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Though they cannot yet come to the table of the Eucharist, Mother Church still has an obligation to feed those who have entered into a relationship with her through the Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming which was celebrated recently. God’s Word is their only food during this period. Instead, the participants depart from the Mass with one or more RCIA team members, to discuss the Mass readings for that Sunday and to experience more fully the impact of the Scriptures in their lives. This time is known as “Reflection on the Word.”

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the one who belongs to God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are in many ways similar to our struggles today as Christians. They, too, witnessed division, scandal, immorality, persecution and other trials. In response, St. Paul taught the Corinthians about the Church as the

Body of Christ, introducing them to the most powerful gift of all: the Eucharist. Join us for the Bible study of First Corinthians at St. Rose of Lima School in room 8 at 7:00pm and continuing every Thursday.
