FOUNDATIONAL CULTURAL AWARENESS WORKSHOPS

We offer several cultural awareness workshops. These workshops can be delivered online, at your place or ours. The workshops focus on three areas of cultural capacity: Knowing and understanding history, culture, customs and beliefs; Doing culturally appropriate actions and behaviour and Being aware, authentic and open to examining own values and beliefs.

These workshops are a starting point in developing cultural awareness and include:

• Foundations of Cultural Awareness • Creating Welcome• Becoming Connected, and • Beyond Tokenism

RESOURCESCultural capability is extended when people are aware of and able to challenge their own world views and assumptions. We have developed a range of resources to support critical thinking and reflection and two tools that support this way of learning are Deadly Cards and Reflection in Action.

Deadly Cards and Reflection in Action can be used when you access our ‘Ledge’ learning space. They can also be purchased on our website.

“This workshop was an amazing experience. The skills and passion of the facilitator, the relevant information and the network of like-minded passionate connections gained is a bonus.”

YARN UP TOK BLO YUMI

Yarn Up Tok Blo Yumi is a two-day cultural immersion program that supports participants to reflect deeply on their practice and challenge their world views and assumptions.

It focusses on history, cultural safety, communication, relationships and partnerships. The program fosters a genuine appreciation for, and understanding of the significance of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, country, history and culture.

Our co-delivery of Yarn Up Tok Blo Yumi with local Elders and community leaders ensures an authentic learning experience as well as providing an opportunity to establish ongoing relationships. The success of the program lies in the conversational delivery approach and the structures that support people to have open and meaningful conversations and to continue to build their knowledge and understanding through engaging in reflective practice.

Yarn Up Tok Blo Yumi is an accredited program. Participants who successfully complete assessment will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for CHCDIV002 – Promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Safety.

“Powerful, powerful series. Respectful and knowledgeable facilitators provided a path to learn the true history of our past. I have been inspired every day to learn more, and believe this series should be compulsory for all. The most outstanding, meaningful and empowering project proving to create significant positive change towards true understanding, respect and culturally safe practices.”

ACTIVATE INCLUSIONLEADING CULTURAL CHANGE IN YOUR ORGANISATION

Activate Inclusion is a two-day program aimed at leaders across all sectors. Workforce Council has many years’ experience delivering cultural inclusion programs, touching thousands of people and hundreds of organisations. We recognise, however, that change can be difficult to enact without support from leadership.

In response we offer Activate Inclusion, an opportunity for leaders to come together and immerse themselves in a series of action-oriented conversations with people in similar roles and with similar opportunities and challenges.

This program uses participatory process to prompt critical thinking that supports leaders to gain an understanding of their own and other cultural realities. This understanding of self and purpose sets the scene for real engagement in deep conversation, action planning and a commitment to leading the implementation of an organisations own cultural capability framework.

There is significant evidence about the benefits of inclusion in the workplace and how these benefits flow on to the community. This program assists leaders in gaining skills in enacting inclusion in their own organisation and reaping those benefits.

“I have gained a deeper understanding of the context in which other services operate and that the time taken to yarn is the time needed. The potential for collaboration on programs such as cultural orientation and job sharing would not be possible in my role without these connections”

WALKING TOGETHERWORKFORCE PLANNING FOR CULTURAL IMPACT

Walking Together is about planning the workforce in regard to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inclusion. It is a very unique program that utilises workforce planning processes and tools but applies them through the lens of cultural wisdom.

The program commences with establishing strong connections and relationships between participants who may be from organisations or represent the community. Together the participants then work through the phases of the workforce planning process. This includes examining the current and future workforce, the opportunities and how to address identified gaps and barriers. The relationships established assist participants to assess their actions through the lens of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and in ways that build their appreciation for cultural wisdom. Walking Together culminates with a group of people committed to shared purpose and a clear workforce plan for implementation in their own organisations and across organisations and community.
