Preferred Hotels targeting AustraliaPREFERRED Hotels & Resorts

has set its sights firmly on the local market, saying it “represents a humongous opportunity” for the company.

Preferred has a portfolio of

about 650 hotels globally, having almost tripled in size since the group was acquired by the Ueberroth family 13 years ago.

In Sydney this week, president and ceo Lindsey Ueberroth confirmed the company had “pretty aggressive plans” in Australia, targeting both outbound travellers and boosting participation from local hotels.

Currently Melbourne’s boutique Lyall Hotel is PHR’s only member in Australia, but Ueberroth flagged aspirations for significant expansion in destinations such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Adelaide, as well as a “special request” for Hobart.

He outlined a new strategy “redefined the way the hotel experience is rated, not by tiers or stars, but by experiences” in order to create greater clarity for independent hoteliers & travellers.

PHR’s iPrefer loyalty program has over 1.8m members, and the company is set to imminently launch a new mobile app which will allow guests to redeem reward certificates - more on pg 5.

Hotel boom worth $8 billionAUSTRALIA’S current hotel

construction boom is the most extensive in its history, fuelled by record investment levels totalling more than $8 billion.

Figures released by Tourism Accommodation Australia (TAA) today show 228 hotel projects under construction or in advanced planning in the six state capitals and Darwin, representing more than 34,000 new rooms.

TAA ceo Carol Giuseppi said the investment would revolutionise Australia’s hotel industry over the next five years.

“This is the most extensive and all-encompassing hotel rejuvenation phase in Australia’s tourism history,” Giuseppi said.

“It is both responding to the massive growth in tourism demand and anticipating long-term growth in the visitor economy,” she said.

The investment boom was reaching all aspects of the

industry, Giuseppi said, from the major international chains to boutique properties.

“Cities such as Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide have been transformed by a substantial number of new hotel openings in the past few years, and Sydney is set to follow suit with $2.3 billion worth of hotel projects already approved and a further $1.9 billion of projects proposed.”

QF exit row policyQANTAS has added a further

element to its safety briefing for passengers seated in exit rows on its aircraft, who in the event of an emergency may be required to operate the doors.

Effective immediately, passengers in those seats who use reading glasses, contact lenses or hearing aids must be wearing them during all take-offs and landings.

Celebrity invests in local staff

CELEBRITY Cruises has amped up its investment in the local market, promoting Cameron Mannix to be the first bdm dedicated solely to the Celebrity brand in Australia & New Zealand, TD can exclusively reveal.

Previously split across Royal Caribbean Cruises’ three brands (Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises), the company is looking to open Celebrity to a

larger local market.“My role is to get the Celebrity

name out there, to increase awareness as to what Celebrity means to clients and to show how we differ from everyone else,” Mannix told Travel Daily at a trade launch of Celebrity Edge class in Sydney last night.

Mannix (left) is pictured with Peter McCormack, head of sales Australia and New Zealand, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines Australia.

Craft distillery for P&O Explorer

P&O Cruises Australia has outlined plans to feature craft distillery Archie Rose on board its latest ship Pacific Explorer when it makes its debut in Jun.

Under a partnership announced last night, the celebrated Australian spirits producer will be the focus of a new on-board bar called The Bonded Store, offering the Archie Rose range of gins, vodkas and tailored spirits.

The distiller will also host a series of hands-on guest experiences including whisky masterclasses and gin-blending

activities, modelled on the popular sessions held at its bar in the backstreets of inner-Sydney.

P&O Cruises Australia president Sture Myrmell said the new bar was conceived after he discovered Archie Rose with colleagues last year.

“We realised we had this fantastic distillery in our own backyard with this amazing product - we decided we had to find a way to work with these guys,” Myrmell said.

Archie Rose Distilling Co founder Will Edwards said the new Bonded Store bar would give guests an insight into the native ingredients and seasonal botanicals used in his products.

“It’s the get-your-hands-dirty experiences that we’ve never offered off-site before that are really going to set this apart,” said Edwards, pictured right with Sture Myrmell last night.

PRODUCT PROFILE

HOST AGENT

Your Travel Centre is a host agency providing you with the technology, marketing and support you need to reach your full potential as an independent travel professional.

WHAT’S the difference between a host agency and other options such as a standard home based agency? A host agency is a very flexible business model. It provides for and supports home based agents in promoting their own brand, with their own trading name, logo, email and website. Your Travel Centre does not operate as a consumer brand in our own right.

The advantage of this approach is that you as an agent are truly

building your own business, with YTC providing all the back end support and marketing to help you grow and prosper. In building your own brand equity you are developing a tangible asset you can easily transfer to another platform or sell as an ongoing concern.

WHY USE A HOST AGENCY?If you’re thinking about starting

your own travel business then no doubt you’re grappling with a whole range of issues you need to consider, starting with should I work with a host or mobile agency, or should I go it alone and begin entirely under my own steam? A host agency acts as an umbrella agency for home based agents, with each agent utilising the host agency’s services and credentials, including licensing or accreditation, technology, marketing,
