Scripture Corner:

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31An encomium for a good and worthy wife, this pas-sage from Proverbs extols all the virtues which a worthy wife possesses – fidelity, industriousness, skill, charity to the poor, and fear of the Lord.

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6Once again, Paul reassures the Thessalonians, who are anxious about the coming of Christ, that they need not fear being unprepared because they are “children of light.”

Gospel: Matthew 25:14-30Jesus narrates the parable of the talents – in the sto-ry, the silver pieces given to the three men. Two of the men invest their coins and double their worth, but the third buries his coins in the ground and earns no return. The message of Jesus is that we must use to the fullest the talents we have received.

thanksgiving day mass On Thanksgiving Day, November 23rd there will be one Mass celebrated at 9am. This is the best way to start your holiday, by being present with your parish community to give thanks to

God for all His blessings. Our annual collection for the Northern Westchester Community Center will be taken at this Mass.

Save the Date March 10, 2018 Our annual St. Patrick's Day Family event will be held on Saturday, March 10th. It’s a fun filled event you don't want to miss!

FYI: Readings and the Liturgical Year Sunday Readings Sunday November 26, the Feast of Christ the King is the last Sunday of our Liturgical Year. Our cycle of readings for Sunday Mass changes on the First Sunday of Advent, which this year is December 3rd. Sunday readings are on a 3 year cycle, labeled Year A, B, & C. For Advent we will be starting Liturgical Year B, which emphasizes the Gospel of Mark. The first reading, which is usually from the Old Testament, reflects important themes from that day's Gospel. The second reading is usually from one of the epistles, a letter written to an early Church community.

Weekday Readings The first reading of the weekday Masses are on a two year cycle, Year I and Year II. Year II is read in even numbered years, so for 2018 we will be using Year II. The Gospels remain the same for both years.

St. Mary's Adopt-A-Family Program: As we look forward to the coming holiday season and to celebrating a joyous Christmas, we also keep in mind those less fortunate. There are always many families that are facing hardship this season. Some are families with small children, some are elderly and having a difficult time paying for medications and food. We can help by "adopting" a family and providing a Christmas meal and a few small gifts to make Christmas a little bit brighter for these families.

The Community Center of Northern Westchester refers their neediest families to us. All are local families. You can choose to adopt a family for Christmas, or make a contribution to the program. No amount is too small!

For more information, please contact Roanne at: 914-715-5542 or [email protected] or Janine at [email protected] or 914-439-4663. The deadline for adopting a family is November 30 but contributions to the program can be accepted up until December 8th.

From the Desk of Fr. Duff

Along with the movement to put Christ back into Christmas, there should be a movement to put thanks back into Thanksgiving.

The scene in the average American home on Thurs-day will often find the women folk, the high priest-esses of homes, vested in their best aprons and paying devotion to a bronzed turkey. The odor of incense fills the kitchen sanctuary, but the fragrance happens to be wild thyme, herbs and spices, and mince pie.

Meanwhile, in the living room, the masculine ele-ment is pontificating on passes and punts, tackles and touch-downs.

The joy of the day is divided between football and feast-ing, between pigskin and turkey. In most homes, after the day is spent, we wonder where Thanksgiving Day went and what it was all about.

Remember the story of the ten lepers whom our Lord sent off to the priests to get a clean bill of health? The crowd had forgotten about the lepers, when suddenly, in the distance, a shout split the air waves—a man rushing toward them! The fingers that gripped the hem of Christ’s garment were no longer the stubs of a leper, but hey were fingers whole and firm and ruddy with health. “Master.” he blurted out, “I am healed.” Searchingly the eyes of Christ looked down the long empty road. “Were not ten men made clean?, and where are the nine?”

Sometimes we are like the other nine; we take for granted all that God has given us or worse still, we’re not satisfied with what we have.

There is a legend about two angels who were sent to Earth to gather up the prayers of men and women. One was to fill a basket with the petitions of mankind. The other was to gather the prayers of Thanksgiving. Some time later, the two angels returned to their Father’s house. One had a basket heaped high and running over with innumerable pe-titions of mankind. The other angel was sad and heavy of heart, for the basket was almost empty.

When it comes to sincerely thanking God for the good news of His caring, loving, healing presence in our lives for some the subject never comes up.

Jesus makes everything worthwhile in life and in death. So therefore we have much to be thankful for not only on Thanksgiving Day, but throughout the whole year.

Thank you Jesus. Thank you! See you at the 9am Mass on Thanksgiving morning.

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
