St. Teresa is a doctor of the Church (feast day is Oct 15th) and one of the best spiritual writers that we have. Teresa often used simple images to describe complex teaching about the spiritual life. Teresa lived in Avila, Spain only a generation after the Muslims were defeated and so the territory was full of fortified cities with high

walls. So one of Teresa’s images for the soul and becoming more holy was the castle. Teresa says your soul is like a castle, your interior castle. There’s a moat, then the outer walls, then the inner walls, and at the center is God who radiates out from the core of your being. And you would think that because this is your soul and your castle that you would have full access to it, but that isn’t how things really work. It is actually quite a lot of work to connect with what is at your deepest levels. As we get closer to God through prayer he makes it so that we also come to know ourselves. If you think about it, it makes sense that knowing the creator would help you to understand the creation. When we become like God and see like He sees we find peace and joy. We have three levels in the spiritual life: Purgation, illumina-tion, and union. And these three are going to be stages that we go through as we approach God at the core of our soul. In the castle they are the outer dwellings, moving to the inner dwellings, and union is at the center, being with God. So before we even get into thinking about holiness we are out here in the moat of our soul. You are looking out at all the distractions in the countryside. You don’t even notice that there is a soul, but instead put all our focus on the world. And the world is full of vermin. Now when Teresa says vermin she means bugs, snakes, spiders and other creepy things. And if you think about having a lot of those around you, it makes it hard to focus on what you are supposed to be doing. Now these vermin stand for the distractions of life. The things that the world offers that keep our attention off of God. Some of these vermin are sinful, while there are others that just refocus us on something else or distract us from what really matters. If that was true in the 16th century, it is so much more so now with our technology and the speed of life. The first stage is purgation or detachment. Your vision is blocked by vermin but you start to notice that there is something more. Something catches your eye. You look to discover a castle that is so covered in grime, foliage and vermin that you can just barely make it out but your attention is caught by a dull glow that comes from its center. You find a way in by scraping away the debris, and you discover a door. This door to the soul can only be opened with prayer. The vermin have come into the castle with you and continue to distract you from your mission. And some-times you even follow the vermin back outside the castle. There are so many that you can’t get rid of them. Instead you decide to ignore them and head deeper into the castle. As long as we are in the world, the distractions aren’t going to quit, but we can deal with them. When you reach the end of this stage the distractions are seen for what they are and they no longer have your attention captured. You wonder why TV or success at work, or honors held so much weight before. Now you see something greater and you begin to give up the other things for it. St. Teresa described the first stage of holiness as leaving the vermin that get in the way of God’s work. The distractions catch your attention and keep you from moving towards the light. The Kingdom of God is so precious, but with all these distractions, we need to allow God to catch our eye and that comes through clearing room for God in prayer and silence. To be continued…

Presumption can be a great sin. We can easily convince ourselves that as long as we do the bare

minimum or master the basics, it is sufficient. Love doesn’t operate this way. If we are truly in love with God, then the basics

are not going to be enough. That love is going to want to get expressed in going above and beyond, in leaving the comfortable and familiar, in stretching and growing and in following a voice other than our own. This is what those who are truly in pursuit of wisdom come to realize. Just like any human relationship worth

achieving reveals, we never reach a plateau in following the Gospel or growing in wisdom and holiness. Wisdom is the rudder

that guides us through all of life’s attractions and options. It alone determines what is worth pursuing and what must be left

behind. That is why those who are only concerned about checking the boxes and doing the least amount possible often

walk away sad when offered God’s gift of life eternal. They are not truly in love.

In the Old Testament, God himself gave directions about the vestments of priests. The main vestments of Roman Catholic priests have come down to us from the time of the Apostles.

There are symbolic significances attached to the various vestments and prayers said by the priest as he vests – or puts on - each piece of attire visibly showing the meaning attached to the church.

Sacramentals VESTMENTS

The cassock, or soutane, is the main vestment use by ecclesias-tics. This is a robe reaching down to the feet and buttoned in the front. For priests this is black; bishops wear violet, cardinals red and the Holy Father wears white. In some countries ecclesi-astics go everywhere in their cassocks. This is also the cus-tom of some religious orders. In the United States in modern times, this is more the exception rather than the rule.

Today’s priests and bishops generally wear a conservative black suit with a Roman collar. The cope is a mantle which is worn at benediction, at processions and for some special occasions. The origin of the cope is the same as that as the chasuble. It’s Latin name, pluvial, is the equivalent of the English “raincoat”. Going back in history it was worn outside in wet weather.

The humeral veil is the long silk cloth used by the priest or deacon when carrying the Blessed Sacrament and giving Benediction. Note: Some of the vestments such as the amice, alb, surplice and benediction veil are always white. The stole for hearing confessions is always purple.

Outside of Holy Mass there are a number of other vestments that the priest uses

LITURGICAL COLOR OF VESTMENTS White, symbolic of purity and joy is worn during Christmastide and Eastertide and on feasts of Our Lady, Our Lord, the Angels, confessors and virgins, as well as for funerals.

Red, the color of fire and blood is used at Pentecost in

commemoration of the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of tongues of fire. It is also used on the feasts of Apostles and martyrs, feasts commemorating the passion of Our Lord and those commemorating Sacred Relics, on Palm Sunday and Good Friday.

Green, a symbol of hope and growth, is used for the greater part of the year.

The priest and deacon dress in green during what is referred to as Ordinary Time, except when Masses are offered in honor of saints, martyrs or the dead.

Purple vestments are worn during Advent and Lent. This color is a

penitential color. Black vestments are acceptable for the funeral liturgy.

The alb, a white linen tunic which envelops

the whole body, the priest prays "Purify me O lord from all stain and cleanse my heart,

that washed in the

Blood of the lamb

I may enjoy Eternal

delights."

The cincture Fastening the alb at

the waist with the cincture or girdle the

priest prays, "Gird me O Lord, with

the cincture of purity and quench in my heart the fire of concupiscence,

that the virtue of continence

and chastity may

remain in me."

The stole is the symbol of

ordained priesthood. The stole is believed to be descended from the official scarf, or lorum,

of the Roman magistrate. In the Roman Catholic

Church, it is a symbol of immortality. It is generally considered the unique badge of the ordained ministry and is conferred at ordination.

The chasuble is the outermost vest-

ment worn by the priest celebrant at Holy Mass.

It hangs from the shoulders in front and back, down past the knees. As the priest

robes in the chasuble he prays, “O Lord, Who says

‘My yoke is sweet and my burden

light’, grant that I may carry it

so as to obtain thy grace.”
