SCRIPTURE READINGS

First Reading: Genesis 14:18-20 Melchizedek, a pagan priest-king,

gives gifts of bread and wine to Abraham. In Christian tradition that bread and wine were taken to prefigure the Eucharist.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 When we celebrate the Eucharist we do not merely make Christ present, but re-enact the death by which he saved us.

Gospel: Luke 9:11-17 Jesus provides an extraordinary meal for those who fol-lowed him into the desert. In the Eucharist the Church continues the mission of Jesus-teaching, healing and nour-ishing God’s People.

Ongoing Projects all around our Church

Many thanks to GARDENS of the WORLD for taking care of removing

and replanting the trees on the east side of the church. Their generous donation

of the 2-Crab Apple and 1-Flowering Pear trees is sincerely appreciated.

In order to help us transition from costly oil to natural gas, work has begun in our boiler room to convert the current fur-

nace. This effort will more efficiently heat and cool our church when completed.

Initial preparations are also underway in our parking lot to make it ready for

paving. During the first week of July the top layer of pavement will be

removed. The next phase will consist of laying the blacktop, etc. The goal is to have the parking lot completed within

one week’s time.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE AN ALTAR SERVER?

FAITH FORMATION NOTES

FAMILY CONNECTION—Gospel Reading Luke 9:11b-17 “They all ate and were satisfied.”

In our age of fast food and eating on the go, families often find that they are not eating meals together at a dinner table. As a family, look back over the past week and recall how many meals were eaten together and how many meals were eaten alone or on the run.

In the Bible, meals are seen as much more than a means to satisfy a physical need. The Hebrew people viewed eating a meal as a way of expressing and strengthening their relationship to one another under God's covenant. It is no coincidence that meals are often the setting of Jesus' teaching and miracles in the Gos-pels. In this Sunday's Gospel, we hear the story of Jesus feeding the crowd of 5,000 people.

Read this Sunday's Gospel, Luke 9:11b-17. Talk about the kinds of hungers that people have in addition to physical hunger. Describe the hungers that a family nourishes (love, compassion, forgiveness, laughter, and so on). Together give thanks for the food that Jesus gives us that we celebrate on this Sunday's feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus. Make a commitment to share in this Eucharistic meal together as a family. (Loyola Press)

The Don Bosco Council of the Knights of Columbus invite all members of the parish and their families to join them in praying the rosary on Sunday, June 30th after the 9:00 am Mass for the Intention of the parish as part of the Knights Family Rosary program.

The parishioners of Good Shepherd Parish are true witnesses to the teachings of the gospel. Recently, the monthly parish food collection was dedicated to the Backpack Program coordi-nated by Sussex County to provide food to school children, especially on the weekends. The response from our parish was most generous providing food to fill in excess of 250 back-packs for the children! Thank you so much and God bless the members of Good Shepherd Parish! Following is a letter from Joan M. Bruseo, Division Director at the Division of Social Services, Newton, NJ Dear Members (of Good Shepherd RC Church), On behalf of the Division of Social Services, I would like to per-sonally thank you for making (in excess of) 252 weekend bags to benefit our “Back-Pack Snacks for Kids” program. Your gener-osity has deeply touched all of us and will in turn touch the lives of countless school children throughout Sussex County who will receive the weekend bags. I would also like to thank Mary’s Caring Ministry and for the extra donation of food. Social Service gives food to hundreds of families and individuals. Your donations will make it possible to provide food on the weekends to school children in need. Thank you once again for your time, efforts and contribution to assist those in need and our mission to end hunger. Each and every donation will bring a little sunshine to each day.

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, historically known by its Latin name, Corpus Christi, celebrates the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucha-rist—Body, Blood, Soul, and

Divinity. It is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday follow-ing the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. In 1263 a German priest, Fr. Peter of Prague, made a pilgrim-age to Rome. He stopped in Bolsena, Italy, to celebrate Mass at the Church of St. Christina. At the time he was having doubts about Jesus being truly present in the Blessed Sacra-

ment. He was affected by the growing debate among certain theologians who, for the first time in the history of the Church, began introducing doubts about the Body and Blood of Christ being actually present in the consecrated bread and wine. In response to his doubt, when he recited the prayer of consecration as he celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, blood started seeping from the consecrated host and onto the altar and corporal. Fr. Peter reported this miracle to Pope Urban IV, who at the time was nearby in Orvieto. The pope sent delegates to inves-tigate and ordered that host and blood-stained corporal be brought to Orvieto. The relics were then placed in the Cathe-dral of Orvieto, where they remain today This Eucharistic Miracle confirmed the visions given to St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon in Belgium (1193-1258). St. Juli-ana was a nun and mystic who had a series of visions in which she was instructed by Our Lord to work to establish a liturgical feast for the Holy Eucharist, to which she had a great devotion. Inspired by the miracle, Pope Urban commissioned a Domin-ican friar, St. Thomas Aquinas, to compose the Mass and Office for the feast of Corpus Christi. Aquinas' hymns in hon-or of the Holy Eucharist, Pange Lingua, Tantum Ergo, Panis Angelicus, and O Salutaris Hostia are the beloved hymns the Church sings on the feast of Corpus Christi as well as throughout the year during Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Please join His Holiness, Pope Francis, who has chosen the following intention to be prayed for during the month of June.

Evangelization: That priests, through the modesty and humility of their lives, commit themselves actively to a solidarity with those who are most poor.
