Do you have jaw or muscle
pain? Do you have
frequent headaches or
neck aches? These
symptoms are due to your
bite. Research has shown
that the majority of people
do not have an ideal bite
(ideal occlusion). When
our upper and lower teeth
do not function together
properly (even if they feel
ok), certain muscle reflexes
can trigger, causing
tempormandibular joint
(TMJ) pain, as well as jaw
muscle pain and
tenderness. This can
cause headaches, pain
when eating, neck pain and
other symptoms. This
improper function can also
lead to destructive
problems with your teeth,
such as cracks, broken
teeth or fillings, excessive
wear of enamel or dentin.
Once this happens it can
be challenging and costly
to repair.
Different treatment options
are available to help. After
a thorough exam and
diagnosis, bite splint therapy
(custom night guard) may
be recommended. This
special appliance can help
your muscles and joints
relax, and reduce pain.
When the custom appliance
is created, we can interpose
an ideal bite (ideal
occlusion) in the appliance,
thereby stopping the
damaging destructive
muscle reflexes. A bite
stabilizing appliance that
we make can help to
diagnose and remove
potential tooth cracking
forces, as well as protect
your teeth and restorations
while you sleep.
A permanent way to get to
an ideal bite is with
orthodontics. Braces from
an orthodontist can be
invaluable to correct
complex cases. Invisible
aligners can be a great
alternative to make minor
corrections to one's bite.
Another permanent option
that doesn't require the time
needed for braces or
invisible aligners is a bite
adjustment. After bite splint
therapy to ensure all
muscles and joints are
relaxed and pain free,
gently adjusting teeth in
specific and predetermined
places can create the ideal
bite and negate the long
term need for a bite splint.
This can make your teeth fit
the way they were designed
to, therefore reducing
destructive habits on teeth
and reduce headaches,
muscle and joint pain.

Here at James Bond Family Dentistry our team is focused on
providing comprehensive dental care to all our patients. Our
responsibility is to educate and motivate each patient to achieve
the goals of optimal oral health and optimal restorative health.
Periodontal health presents as the foundation to the picture of
overall ideal oral health. We are committed to providing
interactive patient education of the oral-systemic connection
and performing comprehensive co-diagnosing in order to create
a treatment plan to satisfy the mutual health goals between
patient and clinician.
As a periodontal therapist, my primary goal is to prevent
disease while promoting and maintaining periodontal health.
This is made possible through educating patients to the damage
bacterial biofilms cause as well as highlighting the detrimental
systemic health effects of inflammatory diseases.
Gum disease is characterized by two main categories,
gingivitis and periodontal disease. Gingivitis is a common,
localized or generalized inflammation of the gum tissue in a
range of mild to severe.
Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that
affects both the gum tissue and bone that supports the teeth.
Individualized Periodontal Therapy, with or without the use of
a soft tissue dental laser provides a highly effective treatment
option for many patients. We will continue developing a
cooperative and trusting relationship with our patients,
exploring their commitment to optimal health with genuine
curiosity and enthusiasm.
James Bond Family Dentistry is excited
about the recent addition to our office
of Laser Technology to effectively treat
gum disease. This article, written by
our Hygienist Katy Tortorici, will provide
you with a quick overview of the tech-
nology and benefits of laser therapy.
What is a diode soft tissue laser and
how does it work?
The SiroLaser Xtend uses invisible light
energy and converts it to heat. The
specific wavelength of our laser is
optimized for oral tissues. The oral
tissues are treated optically, not
thermally, thereby increasing precision
and patient comfort.
What can this laser be used for?
The SiroLaser Xtend offers a wide
variety of applications in a more efficient
and comfortable way for patients, while
providing great clinical results. Here are
a few indications for use:
Sulcular Debridement (treating gum

diseased pockets around teeth)
Laser Bacterial Reduction
Treatment of aphthous ulcers
(canker sores) and herpetic
lesions (cold sores)
Root Sensitivity Treatment
Gingivectomy (removal of
overgrown gum tissue)
Surgical Excision/Incision of oral
pathologies
How can the laser be used to treat
Gum Disease?
Periodontal (Gum) Disease is a
bacterial infection and inflammatory
condition affecting the bone and
tissues that support the teeth as well
as having a direct negative impact on
systemic health. Signs of Periodontal
Disease are bone loss, pocketing of
the gums around the teeth,
inflammation, bleeding, mobile teeth,
and/or tooth loss. The soft tissue
laser has shown to be a successful
addition to the more traditional
Scaling and Root Planing.
How is the laser effective at
treating Gum Disease?
After the teeth and deep pockets
have been thoroughly cleaned, the
laser can then be used to treat the
diseased tissues. Few pathogenic
(disease causing) bacteria can
survive the thermal effect of the laser.
It interrupts the inflammatory process
by physical removal of host defense
cells, as well as removing diseased
and infected tissue within the
periodontal pocket. There is a bio
stimulation of fibroblast cells, making
it ideal for wound healing. The end
Anna Kauffman—Dental Assistant. Anna joined our team in October of 2014. She was
born in North Dakota and grew up on a farm in central Montana. After high school she moved to
Washington to attend WWU and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Health Science. After graduation
she found herself back in Bozeman where she met her now husband. In her spare time Anna
enjoys getting outside with her husband and 2 year old son and taking advantage of all that
Bozeman has to offer.
Michele Mullin—Dental Assistant. Michele joined the James Bond Family Dentistry team in
August of 2014 and has since been instrumental in helping to make patients comfortable and
processes run smoothly. Michelle is a Montana native, who attended Dental Assisting school in
Wyoming and has been a dental assistant since 1999. She has a beautiful little girl that she enjoys
spending as much time as possible with. You can find her on the weekends outdoors mountain
biking, hiking, snowshoeing and skiing.

result is often a complete resolution of
bleeding, inflammation and significant
reduction in pocket depths. A patient is
not able to maintain healthy tissues
unless they first achieve healthy
tissues.
Who benefits from Laser Therapy?
A trained dental hygienist must evaluate
whether a patient is a candidate for
Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy.
Evaluation could include oral DNA
testing for specific pathogenic bacterial
loads, genetic inflammatory
susceptibility, as well as looking at the
patient’s systemic health.
Is Laser Therapy performed in one
appointment or over multiple
sessions?
Laser Therapy is performed with
multiple appointments in order to
disrupt the plaque biofilm, continually
interrupting the inflammatory process
which achieves the healthiest results.
Are there any risks and does the
laser hurt?
Soft tissue diode lasers are safe if
used by a well trained and properly
educated clinician. All proper safety
precautions are followed as indicated
by the manufacturer such as all
parties in the operatory wearing safety
glasses.
The SiroLaser Xtend reduces any
heat conduction to surrounding
tissues, making it more comfortable
for the patient. The wavelength used
in laser treatment allows for a shorter
healing time and reduces post-
operative pain and swelling.
