Extended Weather Forecast (as reported by Météo-France Savoie) for Savoie and the N French Alps

Fingers crossed for some light snowfall! Varied off-piste conditions - some being excellent!

Saturday 21st: Following a bright, sunny morning, clouds will come in very quickly from midday, bringing flat light conditions in the afternoon. There may be some light snowfall later on and into the night (rain/snow limit dropping from 1700 m to 1300 m). Sunday 22nd & Monday 23rd: Sunday: Thick cloud and very light snow (rain/snow limit 1700 m). Monday: Bright and dry with slightly warmer temperatures. Tuesday 24th & Wednesday 25th: Tuesday: Cloudy with a few bright spells. Wednesday: Cloudy with a few insubstantial snow showers. Off Piste Snow Conditions

We are still finding a variety of conditions and they’re very localised. Areas near the French/Italian border (like Le Fornet in Val d’Isere and Val Cenis) benefited from up to 100 cm of fresh snow earlier in the week. In these areas near the border, we are finding some lovely deep powder, sometimes light and sometimes densified by the wind, sometimes a little tricky to ski and other times fantastic.

Areas away from the border received very little fresh snow, and on warm sunny days we’re now beginning to find lovely spring snow conditions in these areas.

If spring snow conditions continue to evolve, we will post a blog on how to find that lovely soft smooth spring snow on henrysavalanchetalk.com/blog

Snow Stability

Fresh snow and strong SE to E winds at high altitude, along with strong gusts of Foehn wind along the French/Italian border have led to windslab forming, particularly on leeward W to

NW facing slopes. The weight of just one skier passing by could be enough to trigger a slab avalanche. The fresh snow has landed on top of very hard surface snow and is not bonding very well to this - there is a danger of natural or skier-triggered slides/avalanches occurring, particularly above 2800 m.

Away from the border, too, the wind has caused a lot of snow to be transported about, leading to accumulations and some surface slab, particularly above 2000 m.

With the return of the sunshine we could also see some natural slides consisting of warm heavy snow, particularly in the afternoons on steep sunny slopes (especially south-ish facing).

The avalanche risk is mainly between 1 or 2 at the moment, but up to 3 or 4 near the border areas subjected to high winds and (possibly) more fresh snow over the weekend. See our ‘HAT Advice’ for the danger ratings’ definitions - they are not much use if you don’t have a basic knowlege of what they mean: http://www.henrysavalanchetalk.com/avalanche-forecasts-danger-rating.

Tip of the WeekAvoid TERRAIN TRAPS. - Even a small avalanche can be bad if it takes you over a cliff, into a small bowl, trees or other ‘terrain traps’!

Check out the daily avalanche bulletins by Meteo France on this link: http://www.meteofrance.com/previsions-meteo-montagne/bulletin-avalanches, entering the mountain area of your choice.

We’ll be updating our blog as much as possible, if conditions start to look unstable, or if we have some nice photos from a great ski on www.henrysavalanchetalk.com/blog also on Twitter @HenryOff_Piste and Google+ and Facebook

G eorge Osborne del ivered the UK budget this week, akin to a l ight f luff ing for voter s with the general e lection around the corner. A 1p cut in beer duty with a pint in London around £4.50, has effectively created the wor s t reward c ard in his tory. Danny Alex ander pres ented the L ibDems alternative budget later on to a near ly empty Commons, with only a third of h is par ty ’s MPs turning up; probably s t i l l more than they wi l l have by the end of May. Red Ed continues to prove an easier target than Adele at a buffet after i t emerged a photo of h im and his wife in their modes t k itchen was taken in the smal ler of the t wo that they have in their £2m London townhous e; apparently a l l champagne s ocia l is t s are created equal but s ome are created more equal than other s .

Footage of Greek f inance minis ter Varoufakis s ugges ting his country should ‘s t ick the f inger ’ to G ermany, making the corresponding ges ture , has been us ed on a G erman talk show ahead of this week’s EU s ummit . Whi le the footage was quickly dismis s ed as fake or taken out of context , i t ’s doubtful an offer to s tick the f inger wi l l sway Chancel lor Merkel to us e any thing other than a hard l ine with Greece in Brus s els , i f i t ever has . Pres ident Ohaha has yet to congratulate Benjamin Netanyahu on his s urpr is e e lection v ictory ; probably bec aus e he dropped his Pales tinian State pledge pos t-election fas ter than an MP’s chi ld abus e inves tigation.

We gather you did a fair few seasons Tim, what were you doing before that?“I Spent a bit of time walking the streets of London wearing a pointed hat apparently being a policemen, then I swapped the black uniform for a yellow one and ended up in Gran Canaria as a holiday rep.”

Bit of a transition from the Police to a 20’s rep in spain! What made you do a winter?“Well lots of the guys I did my summer with did winters, and I wanted to learn French! Sadly, nobody spoke French in Meribel!”

So your first season was in Meribel, when was that?“I was in Meribel when I was 21 after my first summer season so that would have been 1987!”

What was your first winter season job? “I was a barman in The Pub.”

Was it good? What’s the worst season Job you’ve done?“Yer The Pub was great, the worst job was working for a donkey safari in Benidorm. The Spanish owner used to rub his mount’s cock to make it go faster. He also made the sandwiches…”

So how did ‘Fat Face’ get started up?“In my 2nd season in The Pub, I brought some T-Shirts out from the UK and sold them out of a bin liner over the bar. They all went in the first week. It seemed like a good idea, so I stopped pulling pints and went back home to get another batch. That was the start of Fat Face.”

Did you ever conceive how big it could become?“It’s not really something that Jules and I talked about to be honest. We were having a great crack, driving around different resorts in a beaten up van with bin liners of sweatshirts. We never even thought about it becoming a proper job.”

How did it grow so quickly?“We gave free kit away to loads of seasonnaires and it seemed that everyone on holiday wanted a shirt to take home with them. We literally couldn’t make them fast enough. A little later down the line in 1992 we opened our first store in Fulham. By 1998 we had 18 stores. In 2005 we sold the business and headed back to the slopes where we belong. Today there are over 200 stores!”

That’s insane - and without really meaning to do it! Can you tell us what the scariest thing that’s happened to you on the mountain was?“I took 16 people out for a long lunch at The Fruitiere last year, you were one of them! It was when the waiter handed me the bill…”

Ha sorry about that! What’s the stupidest thing you’ve done?“Me, Jules and a gay friend of mine (Jonny Hillman) thought it would be fun to dress up as Margaret Thatcher to watch the England v France match at the New Zealand Rugby World Cup. The only problem was that we looked nothing like her, in reality when we arrived at the stadium we were just three old blokes in blue dresses and high heels… that didn’t go down very well with the Kiwis”

Finally Tim, now you’re retired and you’re no longer running Fat Face what do you get up to? And what are your plans for the future?“I’m still involved with a few businesses. The kite surfing is coming on and I’m back and forth to Chamonix quite a bit as one of my kids is alpine racing. I travel as much as possible. This summer we chartered a real pirate ship around the greek islands with my kids and their friends… stuff like that still gives me a buzz, I’m a big kid still at heart. As for the future? I wouldn’t mind doing it all again, so if there’s anyone out there with a good deal on bin liners I’m in!”

Give the man back his hat!

Calamity Cliff After posting a video to our Echo page a week ago of a skier trying to take a selfie on top of a cliff and then falling badly off it by accident. It was fairly ironic but also very scary that Kene (Echo) managed to do the same thing on Tuesday. Standing on a 20 foot cliff in Le Fornet, Kene temporarily forgot where he was while he tried to get his Go Pro out for filming, as he did so he slid backwards straight off the cliff with a small squeak. Luckily he was fine and had a soft landing, narrowly missing a large rock! We’re only slightly upset he didn’t switch the camera on in time to record it. We did get a photo at the bottom though!

England’s FinestIona (Project Ski) had a team of Oxford University graduates last week, she assumed due to their obvious intelligence they would be a fairly easy group to look after… This was of course proved wrong when she was called to the Chalet on the first night to break up a house party with the Gendarmes

imposing a large fine. They did a pretty good job of fucking up their chalet, as well as losing all their rental skis, and managing to miss their flight home. These are among the smartest people in Britain…

Saloon Win Paddy’s Day:Sorcha (Saloon) threw up on the dance floor while working and then cleared it up and pretended it didn’t happen. Her colleague Sam decided during her shift the most appropriate place to pee was in fact the bin in the bus boy room. Finally Max followed in another seasonnaire’s footsteps from last week scoring a double. More impressively while working a split shift! One on his break and one after Dicks… Both being other bar staff in town…

Nice to be noticed. When closing Bluenote on Thursday Ilaria found someone was still inside the men’s toilet. After a lot of banging on the door sleeping beauty finally emerged. Her friends clearly hadn’t noticed she’d disappeared an hour before and not returned!

Quote Of The WeekLorna (Moris) “You can poke me all you want…”

Sophie (Pacific) seems to love being in the Echo, she came out with this line shortly before passing out at the bar: “Sex isn’t that bad it’s just like playing tennis.”

Spiders Attacks in ValWithout wanting to terrify the Val community too much, this is the result of a spider bite

on Marc (Snowberry)’s wrist! He’s got the super strength but has yet to don a lycra suit or spin a web!

The LASTWordComedian Ron White once said: “I believe that if life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade... And try to find somebody whose life has given them vodka, and have a party.”

I suppose that’s kind of the philosophy behind Step Up this week; those of us lucky enough to live in/visit Val d’Isere have definitely been given a life full of vodka and good times. Sharing a bit of our wealth is probably the right thing to do, especially seeing as all we really need to do is drink some beer and eat some BBQ on the side of a mountain.

That’s all I’ve really got to say this week. Now I’m off to fulfill my life’s goal of being as cool as these 3 dogs spotted outside Loop in Tignes.

Until next week, keep your stick on the ice.KE
