We are happy to share that Dr Tan Leng Leng has joined the THKD family as our new resident consultant dermatologist! Find out a little bit about her in our interview below.

1. What made you choose to specialize in dermatology? I love challenges and dermatology is indeed, a very challenging field. Prior to subspecializing in dermatology, you have to first specialize in internal medicine, which includes a total of 13 subspecialties. Amongst all the internal organs, the skin is the largest and the most superficial organ in our human body. The skin reflects who we are, in term of beauty and attractiveness.

2. Can you share a memorable case that you handled? There are too many memorable cases. “Patients are the best teachers.” I have learned to do more than needed, to persevere to do my best, to excel and to be the most professional, to believe in

myself and to be passionate in my career and life. That is what I developed into with 20 years of medical experiences and seeing thousands of patients.

3. What do you like to do for leisure?Unfortunately, as much as I love leisure activities, there isn’t much time for me to spend. However, I do enjoy chatting with my family members over breakfast with a playlist of light piano tunes in the background. I often recharge my energy from work by reading a couple of books that I have on my to-read-list. Certainly, there’s a plethora of interests I have in life, like painting, writing and travelling… as life itself is a big adventure.

4 Facts about Heart Attack and Stroke1. What are the warning signs of a heart attack? Not all heart attacks begin with a sudden crushing chest pain that we have all heard about. Sometimes, you may just have mild pain or discomfort which can happen while you’re at rest or active. Having said that, the common warning signs are chest discomfort that feels like pressure, fullness or a squeezing pain that lasts for more than a few minutes or comes and goes. Some have described it as pain that spreads beyond your chest to other parts of the body, such as arms, back, neck or jaw. Unexplained shortness of breath is another sign.2. What happens if I delay getting treatment? In the case of stroke, every second that you delay treatment, brain cells die. Fast action improves the odds of recovering fully after a stroke. So it’s critical that you get medical attention right away.3. Why you should call an ambulance If you have chest pains or other heart attack symptoms, you must call the

ambulance immediately. While your first impulse may be to drive yourself to the hospital, it is highly advisable to get an ambulance because the paramedic can start treatment on the way to the hospital. We can also perform an ECG inside the ambulance and transmit the results to the emergency doctors and cardiologist so that a diagnosis can be made right away. The paramedics are also trained to revive a person if their heart stops.4. How can I prevent strokes? The most important thing is to prevent the three major chronic diseases: hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol. Firstly, control your food intake. Avoid overly salty, oily and sweet food. Exercise regularly. Go for yearly health check-ups.
