what is CORIUM?

CORIUM is a unique brick cladding system that combines the natural beauty of genuine brick with cost-effective fast-track installation. It offers a facing brick finish for projects where a cladding system is required rather than traditional masonry.

>>>>

>>>>

The CORIUM system comprises genuine brick tiles, specially designed to fix mechanically to a HPS200 galvanised steel backing section. These profiled sections are mounted in rows onto the backing structure and the brick tiles are clipped into place.

This mechanical ‘clipping’ feature is unique to CORIUM and ensures a high strength façade whilst enabling some adjustment of tile position during installation.

An innovative and versatile solution, CORIUM brings exciting new colour and texture combinations to the construction industry.

Patented in the UK and worldwide; and fully industry tested and approved, you can be assured of a strong, quality finish to your building project that will last many years.

easy to use. simple to install

CORIUM is installed by a nationwide network of recognised installers who can fix CORIUM from mobile platforms, scissor lifts, mast climbers or traditional scaffolding.Through partnerships, CORIUM is also available as part of pre-fabricated solutions, where manufacture takes place under quality controlled, factory conditions, this allows for construction without delays due to adverse weather, reduced materials wastage and also dramatically reduced site construction time. These panels are either lightweight steel frame or unitised aluminium systems and are available for larger scale projects where overall project cost savings can be realised.Suitability: CORIUM is suitable for use with a wide variety of sub-structures including concrete, timber-frame, structural steel, lightweight steel frames and masonry and structurally insulated panels. See pages 22-27 for technical information. Installation: On a suitable structure, with vertical support at 600mm max centres, the CORIUM installer fixes the support rails, clips in the tiles and finishes the joints with pumped mortar.

4

/use & installation

Strength: Rows of profiled steel sections are fixed to the backing structure. Sections are designed to interlock vertically.

Speed: CORIUM brick-tiles are simply clipped into place. The clipping process ensures that consistent horizontal joints are achieved, whilst vertical joint spacing can be adjusted to suit design requirements.

Simplicity: Once all brick-tiles are installed and the quality approved, mortar is applied. The mortar is typically 1:1:6, cement:lime:sand mix applied using a pump system. Prebagged Parex Historic KL mortar is preferred as it has been developed specifically for the system and suits the characteristics of the tiles. The preferred joint profile is bucket-handle. (please see page 5 for colours)

Design and technical support: We offer comprehensive in house technical support, including CAD and PDF typical details.

The CORIUM team offer detailed technical, product and design advice on the use of the system and its applications.

birmingham city universitybirminghamClient: Birmingham City UniversityDesigner: Associated ArchitectsContractor: Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd.Sub-contractor: Alumet Systems (UK) Ltd.

CORIUM was originally only going to be used for the glazed brick sloping window reveals as this ne-gated the need to use pre-cast concrete supports for traditional brickwork. The cost saving this provided meant they could use the CORIUM over the whole scheme, some 2,700sqm of CORIUM was supplied, in 6 different colours.

TM were approached to provide cladding solutions for the window reveals and a multi coloured strip around the bottom of the building. Traditional brick would not be suitable for the technical reveals and colour differences.

Client: The UNITE Group PlcDesigner: Manson ArchitectContractor: Watkin Jones

Speed of construction was essential for this high rise student accommodation in central Glasgow.

Over 5000m² of CORIUM was installed entirely from scissor lifts over 6 months, mainly throughout the harsh winter months with temperatures consistently remaining below freezing.

The strict design and planning stipulations led to the use of over 80,000 corners to achieve a traditional double pillar detail that replicated existing buildings, which allowed CORIUM to achieve a traditional brick façade with a modern, fast track form of construction. The through wall construction was made up of SIPS panels and the CORIUM steel profiles were fixed to vertical top hat sections.

The new Research Innovation Learning Centre at Wonford is a single building, which will be shared by the University of Exeter, Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust for education and training purposes.

The use of the CORIUM system provided an ideal solution to the design intent for a pitched facade which could not be achieved using a standard brick.

The Forticrete Walling Stone supplied included a mixture of both fair face and split face blocks which were used in a unique design along the side building.

ashtead stationClient: Network RailDesigner: bpr ArchitectsContractor: Raymond BrownSub-contractor: Davant Cladding & Painting

Construction has recently been completed on a £1.35m contract for South West Trains to modernise Ashtead Station as part of the National Station Improvement Programme (NSIP).

The station entrance has been completely refurbished with a newer, brighter and larger booking hall.

The contract included demolishion of the existing 1970’s pre-fabricated ‘Clasp’ station buildings and replacing

with new modular station buildings, which are based on Network Rail’s ‘Modular station’ design.

The design has been commended for its simple elegance, crisp lines, disciplined order and openness.

The upgrade of Ashtead station will make a noticeable difference for the community and businesses in the town who depend on the railway every day.

hassocks stationClient: Network RailDesigner: bpr ArchitectsContractor: Raymond BrownSub-contractor: Davant Cladding & Painting

This brand new, much awaited station building has been built as part of the Department for Transport’s National Station Improvement Programme (NSIP), and will bring noticeable and lasting improvements for passengers who use the station.

Through NSIP, the old station building at Hassocks has been replaced with a state of the art modern building however, knowing that the subject of a new station was very close to the hearts of Hassocks residents, Southern worked closely with the Hassocks Rail Group & bpr architects/TM on developing the station design – even to the point of agreeing the brick cladding finish so that it blended in with the traditionally built, existing nearby railway cottages.

The previous station was built in 1972 and became no longer fit for purpose. The key to the design of the new station building was to make it easier for railway staff to maintain, and provide more resistance to vandalism.

st ambrose collegeClient: St Ambrose CollegeDesigner: Sheppard RobsonContractor: Balfour Beatty

TM was approached in 2009 to deliver the facade materials for the £24million buildings that would be sited on the school’s sports area.

Whilst a traditional brick option was initially proposed, the CORIUM brick cladding system was subsequently selected as it provided cost benefits, design solutions and, crucially, complied with the contractor’s ‘zero-harm’ policy on scaffolding.

TM were particularly keen to impress on the contractor Balfour Beatty the excellent health and safety rating of using CORIUM, which does not require scaffolding to install. The lightweight and easy-to-install nature of CORIUM allows installation to take place from scissor lifts.

Jonathan Davis, from Sheppard Robson, says: “The CORIUM brick system was suggested as a means to avoid scaffolding and get the building water-tight rapidly. Sheppard Robson worked closely with TM to review previous projects that had used the system, and to carefully select the right blend of finishes for the new school.

The brief was to offer a brick slip system that was quick & easy to install but robust enough to go all the way down to ground level. The colour/finish of the slips had to be sympathetic to materials on existing architecture in the immediate area.

CORIUM was specified to compliment the Wienerberger Dorchester red traditional brickwork used on the build.
