Welcome to this month’s edition of TLG Times! We had some very positive feedback about last month’s launch, which was delivered to students and staff across every campus worldwide.

This month’s issue explores the world of cinema, and takes a timely look at Mother’s Day. (But don’t worry Canada and Singapore, you haven’t missed it! Mother’s Day takes place at the end of March in the UK, not May.) We’ve got reviews of some of your favourite films – from modern classics like Lord of the Rings to brand new blockbusters such as Taken 2.

For Mother’s Day, we asked some of you what the occasion means in your family, and what sort of impact your mum has had on your life. We received some very touching and poetic responses!

Around the World focuses on London this month, as we explore life in the UK’s capital city.

I would like to thank all of our staff for the work they put in collecting these articles; and most of all I’d like you thank you, the students. Without your input this magazine would not exist, so keep those submissions coming in!

My favourite film is World War Z. This film is about protecting humans from a mysterious disease and stars Brad Pitt. You should watch this film!

– Alperen from Turkey

My favourite film is About Time. I like movies about family, love and friendship.

– Jeongrim from Korea

Invictus, directed by Clint Eastwood, is my favourite film. It’s a wonderful movie about Nelson Mandela who was an amazing and respectful man. This movie talks about racism and tolerance, respect and passion.

– Valerie from France

I really like Avatar because the plot is very interesting and it’s based on the fight for natural resources. Also the special effects are amazing.

– Dimitri from Russia

She has always been the source of my happiness. She always has the answers for everything and heaven is under her feet. If she is satisfied with you, believe me, you own the world. I love her; she is the number one for me and she always will be.

– Abir Suliman Alabani

Your mother is the person who plays a very important part in your life. She is your whole world, the one who gave you life. I am thankful for everything she has done for me.

– Gulim

Between all people in this world you would not find a person who loved you like your mother. She is your first love, your first words, and always your first support. Mom – you are the one and only. I love you.

- Tahra

My mum is very special to me because she always supports and encourages me. She always gets the best out of me. I will always thank God for making her my mum.

– Fernando Saldano

Mother’s Day is celebrated on December 8 in Panama. The day is free for all children to share with their mother, grandmother, aunts… It is customary to give gifts to moms on this day, and share the day with your family.

FILM MOTHER’S DAYHeld around the world on different dates, Mother’s Day is a chance to celebrate mums everywhere – to recognise the effort they put in raising us, and the influence they have throughout our lives.

FILM REVIEWS

OCEAN’S THIRTEEN

Ocean’s Thirteen was directed by Steven Soderbergh and this is the third installment of the ‘Ocean’ series. The film was released to the audience on 8 July 2007 in the USA.

George Clooney, the star of the film, plays an important robber called Danny Ocean who, together with Brad Pitt’s character Rusty, organises a band of robbers to avenge their friend Ruben.

Ruben, owner of a casino, is obliged to sell his shares to a rich man called Willie Bank, who is played by Al Pacino. Danny and his band want to destroy the rich bad man to avenge their old friend. For this reason the band organises a detailed plan to teach the billionaire a lesson.

– Ottavio from Italy

MY FAVOURITE FILM

My favourite film is Rise of the Guardians. I saw it in November 2012. Rise of the Guardians is an animation film produced by DreamWorks Animation in 2012 and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. This is the last film by DreamWorks Animation to be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

The film tells a story about 5 Guardians: Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman and Jack Frost who were the spirit of winter who protected children’s dream from Pitch Black and his Nightmare minions. I like it because Rise of the Guardians was colourful animation film.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING

The film was directed by Peter Jackson.

The film takes place in New Zealand and is based on the book Lord of the Rings, written by J.R.R Tolkien. The story takes place in Middle Earth. The main characters are Bilbo, the ring bearer; Gandalf the White Wizard; and Sauron (the big eye), enemy and maker of the principal ring.

The film tells the story of the fight between Sauron on one side and the elves, dwarves and human race on the other. The film begins when the rings were forged; three rings for the elves, seven rings for the dwarves and nine for the human race. However, another ring was created in secret by Sauron. This ring had the power to control all the others but the human race and the elves fought for the freedom of Middle Earth. Victory was near but the ring was

stronger. After Sauron had been killed, the legend of the ring began.

This film was shot in the wonderful scenery of New Zealand. However, most of the scenery was created using special effects. It’s a fascinating film about wizards, elves, dwarves and their fight against Sauron, the big eye, for their freedom. This is the best story I’ve seen.

– Claudia Otero from Panama

TAKEN 2

The film is set in France and Turkey in 2012. The main characters are Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen.

Bryan Mills was a detective in the CIA, and in the past he killed a leader of an Albanian terrorist cell. Bryan Mills was enjoying his job and holiday in Turkey

with his wife and daughter when the Albanian terrorists looked for and kidnapped them.

I think it is very good because it has a mix of action and suspense.

– Cesar Pabon from Colombia

THE BUCKET LIST

The film is directed by Rob Reiner.

It stars Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. The action takes place in USA, Egypt, India, Africa, Italy, The North Pole and Mt. Everest. The action of the film is set in 2007. The story takes place all over the world.

The main characters are Edward Cole and Carter Chamber. The story is about the ‘bucket list’ of two men. The film begins by looking back to when Carter

wrote the bucket list in his university days. Corporate billionaire Edward Cole, and working class Mechanic, Carter Chamber, share a hospital room. They are both terminally ill. They have just six months to live, so they prepare the bucket list, going on a trip around the world for three months.

I am impressed by the quote in the film: ‘Find the joy in your life’. I think The Bucket List film is touching. What surprised me is the friendship between them. I liked the film because of the different locations. It’s a very beautiful film. I would like to travel around the world one day.

TLG AROUND THE WORLDWe do not let our students get bored during their stay at the Language Gallery; there are all sorts of activities and events going on in London to keep them busy.

Last month, the school was surrounded by romance. While cupid was using his bow to strike love into people’s hearts, Valentine’s Day at Tiger Tiger gave us a fun night out for couples and friends alike.

Students have also been socialising with their friends and classmates during Jamie’s pub night that runs every month. Jamie, one of our teachers and resident beer connoisseur, took the students to the Princess Louise pub, a great example of an old Victorian public house, to experience an important part of British culture.

Britain may not have a great reputation when it comes to food, but London is

doing all it can to prove that stereotype wrong. This month, students joined our teacher Merlyn for a unique dinner experience where they discovered more about British cuisine.

There are tons of free and cheap things to do in London; one of our favourites is the amazing free walking tour in Central London that runs every day. Students spend a unique and funny afternoon visiting some of the most famous sights in London, such as Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the changing of the guard.

And for students who wish to go even further afield, we offer regular trips across the UK and even into Europe.

At TLG we do everything we can to become a part of your adventure in London, and create the most memorable experiences possible.
