Government of Alberta Delwyn Vriend Individual Rights and Freedoms: Individuals in the Christian collage should have the right to attend a school that follows the religion of the school. Self Interest: The government was protecting the self interest of the collage because of the Christian values, giving the collage the right to run it the way they wanted. The Alberta government fought against changing the provincial laws. Human Rights: The government is trying the protect the rights of the Christian collage and the rights of the Christian people who feel that they should be able to maintain the Christian values. Rule of Law: The college had certain rights and they should be allowed to promote their ideologies in specific settings such as a Christian college, to promote religious equalities the college should be allowed to prevent certain individuals from working in their institutions. The Collage should be able to fire Delwyn Vriend because Alberta did not have a specific law stating that homosexuals could not be discriminated against. Individual Rights and Freedoms: The charter guarantees individual equality and freedom from discrimination before the law. Rule of Law: Everyone should be equal before the law, homosexuals should not be an exception. Self Interest: By challenging the supreme court, Delwyn was supporting his own self interest and the interest of the minority homosexual community. Human Rights: Delwyn was trying to protect his human rights because as a homosexual he should be entitled the same rights as heterosexuals. Delwyn should not have been fired because the Charter states that you cannot discriminate against homosexuals.
