The  intended  platform  for  the  “How  to  Save  a  Life”  PSA  is  television.    The  way

this  PSA  will  the  grab  viewers  attention  would  be  with  the  abrupt  action  of  the

boyfriend  slamming  down  the  beer  bottle  when  he  sees  his  girlfriend  chatting  with

the  bartender.  The  camera  angles  definitely  add  when  gaining  viewers  attention

because  we  can  zoom  in  and  out  on  specific  details  during  the  scenes  of  this  PSA.

The  music  provides  a  nice  tone  and  sets  the  overall  mood  and  emotion  of  this  PSA  as

a  whole.    The  way  we  would  persuade  the  audience  would  be  with  the  convincing

element  of  the  black  eye  on  the  girls  face  and  the  strong  emotion  tied  with  the

abuse.  Everyone  needs  to  take  action  when  witnessing  any  form  of  domestic

violence.  There  are  certain  ways  bystanders  can  take  action  to  decrease  the  chance

of  domestic  abuse  happening.    The  number  one  solution  to  stopping  a  dangerous

situation  is  to  immediately  contact  emergency  support  and  authoritative  personnel.

There  are  many  ways  as  listed  by  the  National  Coalition  against  Domestic

Violence  to  take  a  stand  against  abuse,  whether  you  personally  know  the  victim  or

come  across  a  risky  situation.  It  was  intelligent  that  the  girlfriend  being  abused

thought  of  a  clever  way  to  handle  the  situation.  It  was  a  great  way  to  get  help  by

using  a  decoy  so  that  her  boyfriend  would  not  think  anything  is  suspicious.  This

goes  to  show  that  everyone  needs  to  have  his  or  her  radar  on  24/7  if  something

does  not  seem  right  or  fitting.  The  emergency  dispatcher  could  have  just  hung  up

thinking  that  this  was  some  type  of  joke,  but  instead  he  gave  the  situation  a  chance

and  sent  emergency  help  to  this  odd  phone  call.

If  you  do  in  fact  know  the  victim,  here  are  some  ways  that  you  can  aid  the

victim  without  offending  them.  The  bartender  could  have  taken  a  stance  and  alerted

Page 6: Title: How to Save a Life Public Service Announcement

authorities  after  the  boyfriend  had  broken  the  glass  at  the  bar.  It  is  important  that

the  victim  knows  that  you  are  there  for  them  and  can  later  on  be  a  witness.    It  is

good  the  victim  knows  that  whatever  he/she  says  will  stay  confidential  with  you.  It’s

important  as  the  witness  or  acquaintance  that  you  know  and  start  to  understand

what  the  situation  is  like  for  him/her.    It  is  never  the  victim’s  fault  for  being

domestically  abused  and  that  they  know  ‘you  have  their  back’  and  are  afraid  for

their  safety.    However,  do  not  keep  reinstating  that  they  need  to  leave  their  partner

because  they  obviously  know  that  and  just  need  to  learn  of  a  safety  plan  to  escape.

It  is  also  a  good  idea  to  have  your  house  as  a  safe-‐haven  for  him/her  and  their

children.  Emergency  items  can  be  stored  in  the  safe-‐haven.  These  items  may  include

information  from  the  abuser  such  as  the  driver’s  license,  car  registration  and  their

workplace  address.  Medications,  insurance  information,  bank  accounts  and

immunization  records  for  their  children  should  also  be  stored.  “One  in  four  women

and  one  in  seven  men  have  been  victims  of  severe  physical  violence  by  an  intimate

partner  in  their  lifetime”  (NCADV).    It  is  important  to  keep  in  mind  that  not  just

women  experience  domestic  violence,  men  can  also  be  victims  of  abuse.  According

to  Lexis  Nexis,  “One  in  three  women  and  one  in  four  men  report  being  the  victim  of

some  type  of  physical  violence  by  a  romantic  partner  at  some  point  in  their  lifetime

with  one  in  five  women  and  one  in  seven  men  reporting  the  abuse  as  being  severe

physical  violence.”
