4 year project started summer of 2011.

Research funded under EU 7th Framework, Grant Agreement no. 234124.

Project budget: Euro 3,13 million, EU support: Euro 2,33 million.

Overall project goal: Develop and prove feasibility of first ever Air Supported, Zero

Emission, Battery Commuter Ferry, with 30 + knots performance.

Zero emission fast waterborne transport:

A smart way to reducing congestions and emissions

Case:

- Vessel capacity: 70 - 90 PAX + bicycles on aft deck.

- Hourly schedule; route length: 12 NM, speed: 30 knots

- Effective 27 – 30 min operation and recharging in 20 – 25 minutes

- 12 hours operation per day, 360 days per year. Total distance per year 51.840 NM

- Average diesel consump./ NM for a conventional vessel: 9 litres.

Annual emission reduction with use of 1 (one) BB GREEN vessel:

- CO2: 1.389 tons

- NOx: 18,6 – 14,9 tons (Trier 1 vs. Trier 2 engines).

Reduced use of fossil fuel compared with 1 (one) conventional vessel:

- Approx. 520.000 litres of diesel fuel per year.

Energy cost for 1 (one) fast ferry for 1 (one) year of operation: (Local variations)

- Depend on local oil price + (end user) price on electricity.

- Norway example: Cost per year diesel: Ca 500.000 E; electricity: Ca 70.000 E

Saving on energy: 400.000 + Euro per vessel and year.

4Effect Ships International AS – Patented Air Supported Vessel (ASV) Technology

Approach: Combine SOA inventions and -technologies

Assumed main challenges & potential “show stoppers”:

Efficiency. Too high hull resistance at high speed could be a show stopper

Consumption (kWh) pr NM. At “hump” and high speed.

Wash wake. Restrictions apply on most routes.

High power demand. Like a truck driven uphill at full power - all the time.

Tough use profile. High load and - speed, schedule, many NM pr day.

Battery and recharging.

- Modest time for recharging.

- Life (cycles)

- Weight.

- Cost

- Safety issues …

Sourcing correct components. - motors / driveline, propulsion etc.

Battery capacity vs. realistic range.

Outside the scope of the project: Availability to sustainable electricity.

5Effect Ships International AS – Patented Air Supported Vessel (ASV) Technology

Requirements:

Vessel size and capacities:

Hull length 20 m , beam 6 m. Weight loaded: Approx. 25 - 28 tons.

Very low hull resistance / power consumption at «hump» and design speed.

Design speed 30 knots+ ( operation at 22 knots with less manning)

Up to 90 passengers (typical 70) + a number of bicycles

Operational requirements:

Sheltered waters (i.e. around Rotterdam or Stockholm)

Limited sea state / wave heights

Routes with length up to 12 NM (between each main battery recharge)

Local Wash wave requirements (energy and wave height).

Acknowledgment:

Exceeding current State of the Art (SOA)

And thinking «outside the box» would be required.

Estimated power consumption BB GREEN – test vessel

Base: Tank-testing; and full scale test data - a few conclusions:

Traction power @ 25T and 30 knots = 545 kW

Fan power @ rough sea, max 80 kW, calm waters much less (40 kW)

Domestic consumption overhead @ 5% = 6 kW

Total load = 631 kW

Journey time test vessel approx. 15 min (7 NM),

Test battery: 200 kWh.

7 NM * 21 kWh = 147 kWh: (giving a 20% + reserve)

Approx. consumption BB GREEN = 21 kW/NM

Comparable mono-hull = 35 kW/NM
