Leo Hollis: Cities are good for you
In 1994, PJ O’Rourke calculated that if the world’s population were gathered together in one place with the same density as Manhattan ‘everyone on earth can live in the former Yugoslavia’ ... Today the world’s population might need slightly more wriggle room, but no more than Nicaragua. Therefore, living together in a crowded place is clearly not the problem: how we live, and how we are allowed to live together, is what matters most.
Naomi Klein: This Changes Everything
Germany’s program mirrors one implemented in Denmark in the 1970s and 80’s which helped switch more than 40 percent of the country’s electrical consumption to renewables…roughly 85 % of Danish wind turbines were owned by small players like farmers and co-ops..the best track record for spurring renewable energy turnarounds..it’s communities, co-ops and farmers working within an ambitious, well designed national framework…
KPMG: Magnet cities
City government alone cannot reposition a city. It also takes a city’s business leaders, opposing political parties, academics and educational leaders, investors, community groups and residents to buy-in to the need for change. This holds equally true for cities not in crisis, but hoping to further increase their magnetic pull.
What are we working towards?
• A refreshed ‘intellectual’ foundation• A determined approach to ‘reach’• A commitment to ‘cross cutting’ and
‘collaborative’ working• A ‘service’ based organisation
Our challenges
• Creating a new business model• Bristol is a very busy market place• Mission creep• Developing a consortium approach• Leadership impact
