Mobile measurement technique: The-se buzzwords gain further signifi-

cance in times of continuously increasingproduct quality requirements. Being ableto inspect in situ brings various

advantages: The logistical effort of moving largeand heavy parts to a measuring area isremoved. Reports concerning the quality of partscan be produced in the manufacturingenvironment, e.g. during or prior to as-sembly. If fit problems occur, the origincan be immediately detected and ideal-ly changes can be done on the fly. Complex parts can also be measured insitu on the machining-centres elimi-nating the need to lose the datum

points by moving the part to a traditio-nal CMM. A portable FaroArm has be-come indispensable for process capabili-ty. Parts and finished products as well astools and jigs can be measured.

It is important to know that usingportable measurement equipment todaydoes not mean that there have to becompromises in terms of accuracy.

Mobile measurement equipment fromFARO is often more accurate than con-ventional CMMs. Combining the advan-tages of portable measurement with theaccuracy you can achieve with the FaroGage, the decision is easy to make.Improvement in quality, reduction incosts and increased efficiency: These arethe benefits Faro customers can expect.

The FaroArm - Give him a hand

The flexibiliy of the Faro Arm is enabledthrough 6 or 7 joints that allow end-

less rotation of the major axis. At the gripyou find a probe, that could be com-pared to a forefinger. To measure a pointthe probe is placed on the measurementposition.

Highly accurate shaft encoders allowthe arm to compute the position of theprobe at any time in 3D space. So theFaro Arm works like the human arm, but

with more precision and greater flexiblity. Measurements can be made in a variety

of locations with the help of variousmounting options for example magneticor vacuum mounts. Even if there is nomains voltage, the Faro Arm offers an in-tegrated battery capable of powering thearm for hours.

The FaroArm - and Automotive

Nowadays hardlyany cars are

developed, plannedor built without theuse of a FaroArm.Whether it’s a matterof measuring directlyon the vehicle, on themachine tools or onthe assembly line:Automobile manufac-turers such as LandRover, Jaguar,DaimlerChrysler,Volkswagen, AstonMartin, Audi, Porscheand BMW exploit thebenefits of the FaroArm system.

FaroArms - and quality control

Welding appliances are measured byPorsche with the FaroArm.

The advantage: The measuring is carriedout directly and on the spot, and neces-sary adjustments on the tool can beimmediately carried out - by just oneperson. This lowers costs, saves a lot oftime and increases the quality of theproducts. The risk of a possible production stand-still is also reduced.

Under the Mexican sunshine ABBturbines are assembled for gener-

ators of all size groups. The toleran-ces required are correspondinglytight. The FaroArm demonstrates itsfull strength in these surroundings. The generators and their componentparts can be directly measured in situand problems can be highlightedwithout delay.

Large construction machines are toobig for conventional measuring

devices. With the help of a FaroArm,which allows measurements to be madedirectly in situ. Costly transport of large, heavy components or assemblies tomeasuring devices is eliminated.

When the BBCmade its

prize-winning film„Walking with theDinosaurs“, FAROwas also activebehind the scenes. With the aid of alaser scanner on theFaroArm, models of dinosaurs were opti-cally scanned and thus entered into thecomputer. The result: „living“ dinosaurson the screen.

Measuring everywhere - with high precision

The Platinum FaroArm’s±0.005 mm accuracy renders

traditional CMMs, hand tools andother portable inspection equip-ment obsolete. Anyone, any-where can now inspect, reverseengineer or perform CAD-to-Part-analysis on parts, fixtures andassemblies with previouslyunheard of precision.

The Faro Titanium Arm representsparticularly impressive value for

money, boasting accuracy of up to±.0107 mm.

Limitless Flexibility -FaroArm Accessories

The mounting of amobile measurement

arm must be quick andflexible on the other handit must ensure that themeasurement arm issecure. This is why FAROoffers a wide range of dif-ferent mounting optionsfor the FaroArms. Whethermounting plate, portabletripod or magnetic mount, each type of mount offersyou the required safety forhigh precision measure-ments and the highestpossible flexibility you canexpect from a mobilemeasuring system.

These tripods are desi-gned for maximumportability and stabilitywith retractable wheelsthat can be raised andlowered.

Myriad mounting options allowsthe Arm to be used to its fullpotential in any environment.Even mounted directly on the part.

A mounting plate can be attached directlyto a part or machine with the aid of clampsor bolts. As demonstrated at Keenans inIreland.

The choice of the most suitablemeasuring probe depends on the

type of material to be measured. If youare measuring mainly flexible compo-nents, e.g. plastic or thin sheet metalparts, then the touch trigger probe fromRenishaw is ideal. All new FaroArms inthe platinum and titanium series have anintegrated interface for this probe whichcan be mounted quickly and easily andwithout any additional adapter. TheFARO standard zircon probe can be usedwith all the other components.

The probe is positioned where a pointis to be measured; the measurement

is made by pressing the green button. This system means the probes are veryrobust and easy to calibrate.

From hole patterns to complexcurved surfaces, CAM2 Measure

answers the shop floor measure-ment and fit questions that costmanufacturers money. CAM2Measure specializes in featuremeasurement/inspection and CAD-to-part comparison, where everymeasured part can be compared toengineering design files.

While CAM2 Measure operates ona fully functional CAD engine tomake the import and comparisonof measured parts and assembliesto design data easy, the pro-gram is completely functionalwithout CAD as a powerfulinspection and measurementtool. Identify and verify fea-ture locations such asholes, spheres and arcs for first arti-cle inspection or alignment. BecauseCAM2 Measure draws features asthey are measured, process controlbecomes instantaneous. The soft-ware can be used with many meas-urement devices including portableor fixed-base coordinate measure-ment machines (CMMs), Laser Trac-kers, and photogrammetry systems.

form was founded in Orlando, USA in1993. The initial public offering tookplace in 1998, and FARO with its 250employees is today the world's market lea-der for portable measuring technology.

Meanwhile, in a wide range of indus-tries there are over 8.000 mechanical andoptical systems ensuring optimal qualityat low cost, high precision and reliability. This makes Faro the global market leaderin this segment. And this position moti-vates us even more to continue searchingin the future for new innovations, whichwill make portable measuring, even sim-pler and even more exact.

To be as flexible as the most human ofall measuring instruments, with the

same stability and mobility, but with alevel of precision in a different dimension- this is FARO’s philosophy. All this began more than 25 years agowhen the first FaroArms were producedexclusively for the field of medicine. Thismeant that surgeons obtained a new in-strument as an aid for orthopedic opera-tions, for example, facilitating an entirelynew precision. Industry was also quick torecognise the advantages of mobile mea-suring on the spot with the FaroArm andthe Faro Laser Tracker. FARO in its present
