Titanic – A Story Never To Be Forgotten.

White Star Line vs. Cunard LineWhite Star Line and Cunard Line were rival

ship companies. Cunard Line built the massive Lusitania and

Mauritania. White Star Line wished to make bigger and

better ships.That was the start of the Titanic, Olympic and

Britannic.

How Was Titanic Built???

Harland and Wolff was a company that built ships. They built the world famous Titanic.

Titanic was built in Belfast in Northern Ireland in the early 1900’s.

The years were 1908 + 1909.Titanic was owned by White Star Line, along

with it’s two sister ships, The Olympic and The Britannic.

It was designed by Thomas Andrews.Titanic was built so that White Star Line

seemed extraordinary compared to Cunard Line.

Titanic: FactsTitanic was to be unsinkable.She met an untimely fate when

Ismay demanded Captain Smith to speed up.

The ship collided with an iceberg but everyone only thought about the bit above the ocean but thought not of the massive part underneath.

Captain Smith tried to steer away but the bottom part stopped his plan.

(15th April 1912)It was to be for wealthy people only but they

had to fill up with emigrants so that they had enough money to set sail.

Although there was more room for the 1st class passengers, there were more 3rd class than any other onboard the ship.

The ship was the first with a swimming pool on board and was full of luxuries.

It took 180 minutes to sink and snapped in half after many compartments flooded.

Titanic: Facts (Cont’d…Again)Millions of man hours were spent and wasted

on the building of Titanic. It was hand made and over 883 ft long, 90 ft

longer than the Lusitania and Mauritania. There were 3 ½ thousand passengers and

crew.In the plans it was found that Titanic was

supposed to have nine decks. Those plans were not drawn on paper but on

linen. It was called a floating palace and queen of

the sea.It took £7.5 million to build Titanic.1st class had extra room for servants.

1st Class1st class were the wealthiest people on board

Titanic.They were just going on a holiday.There were 325 first class passengers on board.That consisted of 175 men, 144 woman and only

6 children.A 1st class parlour suite would have cost £870

but a 1st class berth would have cost £30.They had electric fireplaces, a swimming pool, a

smoking room and a gymnasium. They also had very grand furnishings.They also had many riches.

2nd Class

Second class consisted mostly of teachers and doctors.

They hadn’t as much money as 1st class did but they had much more than the emigrants.

Second class also had a smoking room.The first class did not communicate with

second class that much.They were allowed in the gymnasium.

3rd Class3rd class were emigrants with hardly any money. It consisted of 706 passengers.There were 463 men, 165 women and 79

children. They were not allowed any where near first or

second class.They could not enter the gymnasium or the

swimming pool.Their rooms had bunk beds, heat, lighting but

no sheets or fresh hot water basins.The emigrants were looked down upon.

The JourneyThe Journey seemed to be going magnificently.Everyone was looking forward to reaching America. 1st class were looking forward to their holiday. The emigrants were looking forward to starting

their new lives.3rd class were not enjoying the rule about staying so

far from the 1st class and even the 2nd class.Other than some parts the Journey was going

splendidly and everybody thought They would make it to America without a scratch…Sadly, they were wrong!

People InvolvedThe people involved had much blame upon

them when Titanic sank.Harland & Wolff (H&W) had built the

luxurious ship.Joseph Bruce Ismay was chairman and

managing director of White Star Line.Captain Edward John Smith was captaining

that beautiful ship.Lord William Pirie was chairman of H&W.Thomas Andrews designed the liner.

The SinkingTitanic, also know as the unsinkable ship, hit an

iceberg and did just that…sunk! If Ismay had not demanded Captain Smith to speed up the collision would not be as tragic. At sight of the iceberg, Captain Smith hurried to steer the ship away from it but the part of the iceberg beneath the water was tremendously huge and scratched the side of the ship. Five compartments flooded and that was one too many. When sinking, Titanic split in half and started sinking quicker than before.

Women and children boarded the lifeboats first but Ismay stole a spot in one lifeboat. One woman ran back for her hat and missed her boat but that one sank and she got on another. Another woman left her lifeboat so that her husband would not die alone! ♥

BLAME!!!Many people were to blame! If Harland & Wolff had used better materials,

the ship would have been stronger. If Ismay had not demanded Captain Smith to go faster, he could possibly have avoided the iceberg. If Captain Smith did not follow such orders, he may have avoided the iceberg. If Lord William Pirie ordered stronger material from the suppliers, the titanic might not have flooded. If Thomas Andrews had a better design, Titanic may not have been so vulnerable.

Timeline.1908-1909: Construction of Titanic begins in

Belfast.April 10th 1912 9:30-11:30 am: Passengers

board ship at Southampton. Titanic sets of for maiden voyage at noon.

April 14th 11:40pm: Iceberg is spotted and strikes titanic on starboard (right) side.

April 14th 11:50: water rises 14 ft in front of ship.April 15th 12:00 am: Captain is told Titanic can

stay afloat for just a few hours. He gives orders to call for help.

April 15th 2:05 am: last lifeboat leaves. 1,500 people left on ship.

April 15th 2:20 am: Titanic stern settles into water. People slowly freeze to death.

bound for New York. She carries 705 survivors.
