    General SafetyThis machine is capable of amputating hands and feetand of throwing objects. Toro designed and testedthis lawn mower to offer reasonably safe service;however, failure to comply with safety instructionsmay result in injury or death.• Read, understand, and follow all instructions and

    warnings in the Operator’s Manual and othertraining material, on the machine, engine, andattachments. All operators and mechanics shouldbe trained. If the operator(s) or mechanic(s) cannot read this manual, it is the owner’s responsibility

    to explain this material to them; other languagesmay be available on our website.

    • Only allow trained, responsible, and physicallycapable operators that are familiar with the safeoperation, operator controls, and safety signs andinstructions to operate the machine. Never letchildren or untrained people operate or service theequipment. Local regulations may restrict the ageof the operator.

    • Do Not operate the machine near drop-offs,ditches, embankments, water, or other hazards, oron slopes greater than 15 degrees.

    140-3451Note: This machine complies with the industry standard stability test in the static lateral and longitudinal tests with the maximumrecommended slope indicated on the decal. Review the instructions for operating the machine on slopes in the Operator’s Manual aswell as the conditions in which you would operate the machine to determine whether you can operate the machine in the conditions onthat day and at that site. Changes in the terrain can result in a change in slope operation for the machine.

    Fuel GaugeThe fuel gauge displays the amount of fuel in the tank(Figure 7).

    Throttle ControlThe throttle controls the engine speed, and it has acontinuous-variable setting from the SLOW to FASTposition (Figure 6).

    Choke ControlUse the choke control to start a cold engine (Figure 6).

    Hour MeterThe hour meter records the number of hours theengine has operated. It operates when the engineis running. Use these times for scheduling regularmaintenance (Figure 6).

    Motion-Control LeversUse the motion-control levers to drive the machineforward, reverse, and turn either direction (Figure 5).

    Neutral-Lock PositionMove the motion-control levers outward from thecenter to the NEUTRAL-LOCK position when exitingthe machine (Figure 21). Always position themotion-control levers into the NEUTRAL-LOCK positionwhen you stop the machine or leave it unattended.

    Parking-Brake LeverThe parking-brake lever is located on the left side ofthe console (Figure 5). The brake lever engages aparking brake on the drive wheels.

    To engage the parking brake, pull up the lever until itlatches into the detent slot.

    To disengage the parking brake, pull the lever out ofthe detent slot and toward you, then push it down.

    Foot Pedal Deck-Lift SystemThe foot pedal deck-lift system allows you to lowerand raise the deck from the seated position. Youcan use the foot pedal to lift the deck briefly to avoidobstacles (Figure 5).

    Key SwitchThe key switch, used to start and shut off the engine,has 3 positions: OFF, RUN, and START (Figure 6).Refer to Starting the Engine (page 21).

    Blade-Control Switch (PowerTakeoff)The blade-control switch, represented by apower-takeoff (PTO) symbol, engages anddisengages power to the mower blades (Figure 6).

  • Height-of-Cut PinThe height-of-cut pin works with the foot pedal to lockthe deck in a specific cutting height. Adjust the heightof cut only when the machine is not moving (Figure 5).

    OperationNote: Determine the left and right sides of themachine from the normal operating position.

    Before OperationBefore Operation Safety• Evaluate the terrain to determine what accessories

    and attachments are needed to properly andsafely perform the job. Only use accessories andattachments approved by Toro.

    • Inspect the area where the equipment is to beused and remove all rocks, toys, sticks, wires,bones, and other foreign objects. These canbe thrown or interfere with the operation of themachine and may cause personal injury to theoperator or bystanders.

    • Wear appropriate personal protective equipmentsuch as safety glasses, substantial slip-resistantfootwear, and hearing protection. Tie back longhair and avoid loose clothing and loose jewelrywhich may get tangled in moving parts.

    CAUTIONThis machine produces sound levels inexcess of 85 dBA at the operator’s ear andcan cause hearing loss through extendedperiods of exposure.Wear hearing protection when operatingthis machine.

    • Check that the operator presence controls,safety switches, and shields are attached andfunctioning properly. Do Not operate unless theyare functioning properly.

    • Do Not operate the mower when people, especiallychildren, or pets are in the area. Stop the machineand attachment(s) if anyone enters the area.

    • Do Not operate the machine without the entiregrass collection system, discharge deflector,or other safety devices in place and in properworking condition. Grass catcher componentsare subject to wear, damage and deterioration,which could expose moving parts or allow objectsto be thrown. Frequently check for worn ordeteriorating components and replace them withthe manufacturer’s recommended parts whennecessary.

  • Pre-StartFill fuel tank on level ground. See FuelRecommendations in the Specifications section foradditional gasoline information.

    Do Not add oil to gasoline.

    Do Not overfill fuel tank. Fill the fuel tank to the bottomof the filler neck. The empty space in the tank allowsgasoline to expand. Overfilling may result in fuelleakage or damage to the engine or emission system.

    Make sure you understand the controls, their locations,their functions, and their safety requirements.

    Refer to the Maintenance section and perform all thenecessary inspection and maintenance steps.

    Fuel SafetyUse extreme care when handling fuel.

    DANGERIn certain conditions gasoline is extremelyflammable and vapors are explosive.A fire or explosion from gasoline can burnyou, others, and cause property damage.• Fill the fuel tank outdoors on level ground,

    in an open area, when the engine is cold.Wipe up any gasoline that spills.

    • Never refill the fuel tank or drain themachine indoors or inside an enclosedtrailer.

    • Do Not fill the fuel tank completely full.Fill the fuel tank to the bottom of the fillerneck. The empty space in the tank allowsgasoline to expand. Overfilling may resultin fuel leakage or damage to the engine oremission system.

    • Never smoke when handling gasoline, andstay away from an open flame or wheregasoline fumes may be ignited by spark.

    • Store gasoline in an approved containerand keep it out of the reach of children.

    • Add fuel before starting the engine. Neverremove the cap of the fuel tank or add fuelwhen engine is running or when the engineis hot.

    • If fuel is spilled, Do Not attempt to startthe engine. Move away from the area ofthe spill and avoid creating any source ofignition until fuel vapors have dissipated.

    • Do Not operate without entire exhaustsystem in place and in proper workingcondition.

  • DANGERIn certain conditions during fueling, staticelectricity can be released causing a sparkwhich can ignite gasoline vapors. A fire orexplosion from gasoline can burn you andothers and cause property damage.• Always place gasoline containers on the

    ground away from your vehicle beforefilling.

    • Do Not fill gasoline containers inside avehicle or on a truck or trailer bed becauseinterior carpets or plastic truck bed linersmay insulate the container and slow theloss of any static charge.

    • When practical, remove gas-poweredequipment from the truck or trailer andrefuel the equipment with its wheels on theground.

    • If this is not possible, then refuel suchequipment on a truck or trailer from aportable container, rather than from agasoline dispenser nozzle.

    • If a gasoline dispenser nozzle must beused, keep the nozzle in contact with therim of the fuel tank or container opening atall times until fueling is complete. Do Notuse a nozzle lock open device.

    WARNINGGasoline is harmful or fatal if swallowed.Long-term exposure to vapors has causedcancer in laboratory animals. Failure to usecaution may cause serious injury or illness.• Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors.• Keep face away from nozzle and gas

    tank/container opening.• Keep away from eyes and skin.• Never siphon by mouth.

    To help prevent fires:• Keep engine and engine area free from

    accumulation of grass, leaves, excessive greaseor oil, and other debris which can accumulate inthese areas.

    • Clean up oil and fuel spills and remove fuel soakeddebris.

    • Allow the machine to cool before storing themachine in any enclosure. Do Not store near

    flame or any enclosed area where open pilot lightsor heat appliances are present.

    Adding FuelRecommended Fuel• For best results, use only clean, fresh (less than

    30 days old), unleaded gasoline with an octanerating of 87 or higher ((R+M)/2 rating method).

    • Ethanol: Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol(gasohol) or 15% MTBE (methyl tertiary butylether) by volume is acceptable. Ethanol andMTBE are not the same. Gasoline with 15%ethanol (E15) by volume is not approved for use.Never use gasoline that contains more than10% ethanol by volume, such as E15 (contains15% ethanol), E20 (contains 20% ethanol), or E85(contains up to 85% ethanol). Using unapprovedgasoline may cause performance problems and/orengine damage which may not be covered underwarranty.

    • Do not use gasoline containing methanol.• Do not store fuel either in the fuel tank or fuel

    containers over the winter unless you use a fuelstabilizer.

    • Do not add oil to gasoline.

    Using Stabilizer/ConditionerUse fuel stabilizer/conditioner in the machine at alltimes to keep the fuel fresh longer when used asdirected by the fuel-stabilizer manufacturer.

    Important: Do not use fuel additives containingmethanol or ethanol.

    Add the amount of fuel stabilizer/conditioner to freshfuel as directed by the fuel-stabilizer manufacturer.

    Filling the Fuel Tank1. Park the machine on a level surface.2. Engage the parking brake.3. Shut off the engine and remove the key.4. Clean around the fuel-tank cap.5. Fill the fuel tank until the fuel gauge reads at the

    full mark (Figure 8).

    Note: Do not fill the fuel tank completely full.The empty space in the tank allows the fuel toexpand.

    Breaking in a New MachineNew engines take time to develop full power. Mowerdecks and drive systems have higher friction whennew, placing additional load on the engine. Allow40 to 50 hours of break-in time for new machines todevelop full power and best performance.

    Using the Safety-InterlockSystem

    WARNINGIf the safety-interlock switches aredisconnected or damaged, the machine couldoperate unexpectedly, causing personalinjury.• Do not tamper with the interlock switches.• Check the operation of the interlock

    switches daily and replace any damagedswitches before operating the machine.

    Understanding theSafety-Interlock SystemThe safety-interlock system is designed to prevent theengine from starting unless:• The blade-control switch (PTO) is disengaged.• The motion-control levers are in the NEUTRAL-LOCK

    position.• The parking brake is engaged.The safety-interlock system also is designed to shutoff the engine whenever the control levers are out ofthe NEUTRAL-LOCK position and you rise from the seat.

    Testing the Safety-InterlockSystemService Interval: Before each use or dailyTest the safety-interlock system before you use themachine each time. If the safety system does notoperate as described below, have an AuthorizedService Dealer repair the safety system immediately.1. Sit on the seat, engage the parking brake, and

    move the blade-control switch (PTO) to the ONposition. Try starting the engine; the engineshould not crank.

    2. Sit on the seat, engage the parking brake, andmove the blade-control switch (PTO) to the OFFposition. Move either motion-control lever (outof the NEUTRAL-LOCK position). Try starting theengine; the engine should not crank. Repeat forother control lever.

    3. Sit on the seat, engage the parking brake,move the blade-control switch (PTO) to the OFFposition, and move the motion-control levers tothe NEUTRAL-LOCK position. Start the engine.While the engine is running, release the parkingbrake, engage the blade-control switch (PTO),and rise slightly from the seat; the engine shouldshut off.

  • 4. Sit on the seat, engage the parking brake,move the blade-control switch (PTO) to the OFFposition, and move the motion-control leversto NEUTRAL-LOCK position. Start the engine.While the engine is running, center eithermotion-control lever and move it forward orreverse; the engine should shut off. Repeat forother motion-control lever.

    Slope Safety• Slopes are a major factor related to loss of control

    and rollover accidents, which can result in severeinjury or death. The operator is responsible forsafe slope operation. Operating the machine onany slope requires extra caution. Before using themachine on a slope, the operator must:– Review and understand the slope instructions

    in the manual and on the machine.– Use an angle indicator to determine the

    approximate slope angle of the area.– Never operate on slopes greater than 15

    degrees.– Evaluate the site conditions of the day to

    determine if the slope is safe for machineoperation. Use common sense and goodjudgment when performing this evaluation.Changes in the terrain, such as moisture, canquickly affect the operation of the machine ona slope.

    • Identify hazards at the base of the slope. DoNot operate the machine near drop offs, ditches,embankments, water or other hazards. Themachine could suddenly roll over if a wheel goesover the edge or the edge collapses. Keep a safe

    distance (twice the width of the machine) betweenthe machine and any hazard. Use a walk behindmachine or a hand trimmer to mow the grass inthese areas.

    Driving the MachineThe drive wheels turn independently, powered byhydraulic motors on each axle. You can turn 1 sidein reverse while you turn the other forward, causingthe machine to spin rather than turn. This greatlyimproves the machine maneuverability but mayrequire some time for you to adapt to how it moves.

    The throttle control regulates the engine speed asmeasured in rpm (revolutions per minute). Placethe throttle control in the FAST position for bestperformance. Always operate in the full throttleposition when mowing.

    Using the Side DischargeThe mower has a hinged grass deflector thatdisperses clippings to the side and down toward theturf.

    DANGERWithout a grass deflector, discharge cover, ora complete grass-catcher assembly mountedin place, you and others are exposed to bladecontact and thrown debris. Contact withrotating mower blade(s) and thrown debriswill cause injury or death.• Never remove the grass deflector from the

    You can adjust the height of cut from 38 to 114 mm(1-1/2 to 4-1/2 inches) in 6 mm (1/4 inch) incrementsby moving the height-of-cut pin into different holelocations.1. Push on the deck-lift pedal with your foot to raise

  • Operating TipsUsing the Fast Throttle SettingFor best mowing and maximum air circulation, operatethe engine at the FAST position. Air is required tothoroughly cut grass clippings, so do not set theheight-of-cut so low as to totally surround the mowerdeck in uncut grass. Always try to have 1 side of themower deck free from uncut grass, which allows airto be drawn into the mower deck.

    Cutting a Lawn for the First TimeCut grass slightly longer than normal to ensure thatthe cutting height of the mower deck does not scalpany uneven ground. However, the cutting heightused in the past is generally the best one to use.When cutting grass longer than 15 cm (6 inches) tall,you may want to cut the lawn twice to ensure anacceptable quality of cut.

    Cutting a Third of the Grass BladeIt is best to cut only about a third of the grass blade.Cutting more than that is not recommended unlessgrass is sparse, or it is late fall when grass growsmore slowly.

    Alternating the Mowing DirectionAlternate the mowing direction to keep the grassstanding straight. This also helps disperse clippings,which enhances decomposition and fertilization.

    Mowing at Correct IntervalsGrass grows at different rates at different times ofthe year. To maintain the same cutting height, mowmore often in early spring. As the grass growth rateslows in mid summer, mow less frequently. If youcannot mow for an extended period, first mow at ahigh cutting height, then mow again 2 days later at alower height setting.

    Using a Slower Cutting SpeedTo improve cut quality, use a slower ground speedin certain conditions.

    Avoiding Cutting Too LowWhen mowing uneven turf, raise the cutting heightto avoid scalping the turf.

    Stopping the MachineIf you must stop the forward motion of the machinewhile mowing, a clump of grass clippings may

    drop onto your lawn. To avoid this, move onto apreviously cut area with the blades engaged or youcan disengage the mower deck while moving forward.

    Keeping the Underside of theMower Deck CleanClean clippings and dirt from the underside of themower deck after each use. If grass and dirt build upinside the mower deck, cutting quality will eventuallybecome unsatisfactory.

    Maintaining the Blade(s)Maintain a sharp blade throughout the cutting seasonbecause a sharp blade cuts cleanly without tearing orshredding the grass blades. Tearing and shreddingturns grass brown at the edges, which slows growthand increases the chance of disease. Check themower blades after each use for sharpness, andfor any wear or damage. File down any nicks andsharpen the blades as necessary. If a blade isdamaged or worn, replace it immediately with agenuine Toro replacement blade.

Knowingthis information could help you, your family, pets, orbystanders avoid injury.To transport the machine:• Lock the brake and block the wheels.• Securely fasten the machine to the trailer or truck

    Cleaning and Storage1. Disengage the blade-control switch (PTO), and

    3. Remove grass clippings, dirt, and grime from theexternal parts of the entire machine, especiallythe engine and hydraulic system. Clean dirt andchaff from the outside of the engine cylinderhead fins and blower housing.

    Important: You can wash the machine withmild detergent and water. Do not pressurewash the machine. Avoid excessive useof water, especially near the control panel,engine, hydraulic pumps, and motors.

    4. Check the parking brake operation; refer toOperating the Parking Brake (page 19).

    5. Service the air cleaner; refer to Servicing the AirCleaner (page 31).

    6. Change the crankcase oil; refer to Changing theEngine Oil and Oil Filter (page 32).

    7. Check the tire pressure; refer to Checking theTire Pressure (page 38).

    8. Charge the battery; refer to Charging the Battery(page 37).

    9. Scrape any heavy buildup of grass and dirtfrom the underside of the mower, then wash themower with a garden hose.

    Note: Run the machine with the blade-controlswitch (PTO) engaged and the engine at highidle for 2 to 5 minutes after washing.

    10. Check the condition of the blades; refer toServicing the Cutting Blades (page 40).

    11. Prepare the machine for storage when non-useoccurs over 30 days. Prepare the machine forstorage as follows:A. Add a petroleum-based

    stabilizer/conditioner to fuel in thetank. Follow mixing instructions fromthe stabilizer manufacturer. Do not usean alcohol-based stabilizer (ethanol ormethanol).

    B. Run the engine to distribute conditioned fuelthrough the fuel system (5 minutes).

    C. Shut off the engine, allow it to cool, anddrain the fuel tank using a pump typesyphon or operate the engine until it shutsoff.

    D. Dispose of fuel properly. Recycle the fuelaccording to local codes.

    Important: Do not storestabilizer/conditioned fuel over90 days.

    12. Remove and check the condition of the sparkplug(s); refer to Servicing the Spark Plug (page34). With the spark plug(s) removed from theengine, pour 30 ml (2 tablespoons) of engineoil into the spark plug hole. Use the starter tocrank the engine and distribute the oil inside thecylinder. Install the spark plug(s). Do not installthe wire on the spark plug(s).

    13. Check and tighten all bolts, nuts, and screws.Repair or replace any part that is damaged.

    14. Paint all scratched or bare metal surfaces. Paintis available from your Authorized Service Dealer.

    15. Store the machine in a clean, dry garage orstorage area. Remove the key from the switchand keep it out of reach of children or otherunauthorized users. Cover the machine toprotect it and keep it clean.

    Storing the Battery1. Fully charge the battery.2. Let the battery rest for 24 hours, then check the

    battery voltage.

    Note: If the battery voltage is below 12.6 V,repeat steps 1 and 2.

    3. Disconnect the cables from the battery.4. Check the voltage periodically to ensure that the

    voltage is 12.4 V or higher.

    Battery Storage Tips• Store the battery in a cool, dry area in an upright

    position.• Do not stack batteries directly on top of each other,

    unless they are in cartons.• Do not stack more than 3 batteries (only 2 if the

    battery type is commercial).• Test a wet battery every 4 to 6 months and charge

    it, if necessary.• Always test and charge the battery before

    installation.
