    The Diabetes Prevention ProgramThere is a public health crisis in America: 1 out of 3 adults currently has pre-diabetes. Of those, 90% don’t even know they have it, and 75% are likely to develop type 2 diabetes. On average, those with diabetes will incur 2-3 times more medical expenses than those without it.In response to this epidemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has created the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), an initiative designed to help people at risk of type 2 diabetes reduce their risk by participating in evidence-based lifestyle changes in a community network setting. A trained Lifestyle Coach incorporates lifestyle modification support around healthy eating, increased physical activity and stress reduction

    while teaching new skills and habits for lifetime sustainability. The lifestyle change program is a fully paid benefit for Medicare/Medicare Advantage members. See if you qualify for this CDC approved program designed to help you control your A1C’s by visiting habitnu.com/csc. DPP begins at the Club in January 2020. Contact: Kelsey Garrison

    Whether you or a loved one are seeking relief from a medical condition or just trying to do a little better for your own personal health, here are several new programs and perspectives that can help you take the right steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

    Pilates for ParkinsonsIt’s well documented that exercise helps improve quality of life for people impacted by Parkinson’s Disease. Jane Hein of the Mayo Clinic said, “Pilates can be particularly helpful for people with stability and motor-related issues including Parkinson. Pilates reformer allows people to perform strengthening exercises on their back, stomach and sides...(helping them) feel more safe and supported.” Pilates for Parkinsons is a class designed for people who struggle with this disease. It’s hosted by certified instructor and physical therapy assistant Mary Wahrer every Wednesday at 3pm in the Mind/Body Center.

    The Pilates Reformer provides a safe, guided exercise routine for mental stimulation and enhanced mind-body connection in a class environment with social support. Schedule a free 30-minute demo with us before attending a paid class to see if it’s a good fit for you. If it is, then weekly classes are $22 for members or $30 for guests of the Club. Exercise with CancerA structured fitness routine can make all the difference for people braving their way through cancer. Join CSC trainer and ACE cancer specialist Claire Wellington for the new Exercise with Cancer program at the Club, a class created to help people who have been weakened by cancer treatments improve their day-to-day lives. Claire was inspired to teach this class after witnessing firsthand how much of a difference exercise made in her father’s life when being treated with chemotherapy and radiation for stage-4 lung and lymph node cancer.

    Every class walks participants through a beginning pulse and blood pressure check; 15 minutes of warm-up activity; 20 minutes of strength training; and 20 minutes of cardio.

    Mary Wahrer instructs the Wednesday 3pm Pilates for Parkinsons class.

    2nd Legacy Tree Dedication: Barbara Durand

    In January, 2006, Barbara suffered two strokes which left her paralyzed on her right side. After five weeks at Drake and a year of almost daily therapy, she needed to continue her exercises and therapy on her own. The Cincinnati Sports Club provided that opportunity, and it became her second home. She did resistance work in the Express Room on the

    Mezzanine, rode bikes for cardio, walked on the track to increase strength and endurance, and took Pilates with Angie Eynon. Eventually, Barbara was able to walk again. She walked every day, often as much as a mile and a half. However, in 2015, Barbara experienced a serious fall that left her with major challenges once again.Although walking short distances on land became very difficult, Barbara could walk and exercise on her own in the warm water pool holding onto the bar. The Club staff helped her use the pool twice a week, making great progress in developing renewed strength and ability to move around. The Club truly made a difference for Barbara, significantly improving her post-stroke quality of living and adding several years to her life.The legacy tree was sponsored by Barbara’s husband Rene’ Durand to honor her, and as a “thank you” to the Club for all that was done for her during her last twelve years with us. The plaque reads, “Barbara Rose Durand, celebrating a life spent loving and caring for others.”

We’re asking members keep them in mind when you do your Thanksgiving shopping. Pick up a list of suggested food items to donate, the Club provides the turkey’s. Bring your donation back to the Club before Friday, November 17. Right after we send a feast to the YWCA, the Annual Giving Tree finds its seasonal home in the Club Lobby. The action is heating up on the courts inside and outside at the Club with fun sports for all ages this winter. These programs are fun and great for all skill levels; check the schedule and give one a try.

    Trending in Racquet SportsAlthough tennis is the most widely embraced racquet sport in the world, evolutions of the game are giving people a chance to play on the courts in the winter and taking off in popularity. Take Platform Tennis, for example; it’s a doubles evolution similar to tennis, but played with a paddle-like racquet on smaller outdoor courts. Sign up for Platform Tennis Clinics with head pro Jeff Roman to give it a shot;

    Congrats to Pickleball Summer A League Winners – Day League Champs Ellie Maxwell (Mariemont) and Anne Gilligan (Hyde Park ) and Evening League Champs Josh Newbanks (Hyde Park) and David Coates (Mariemont)

    The outdoor courts were action packed this summer with pickleball and tennis play for all skill levels.

    he’ll teach you the proper strokes before incorporating new skills in game-like situations. Daytime and evening instruction is available for beginner to intermediate platform players; visit the website or find a brochure at the Club for details. Contact: Jeff Roman If you prefer to stay inside and swing a racquet in the warmth, then Pickleball just might be the sport for you. It combines elements of table tennis and badminton, and it’s very easy to pick up and learn quickly. We offer Pickleball leagues through the winter at the Club, as well as beginner classes to tune your game before jumping into competitive play.
