FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE:
Team Sports Day at TIS, January 31st
In honor of the Super Bowl, the Tolland Intermediate School Unified Arts Department is
sponsoring our annual Sports Team Day. For Sports Team Day, all students and staff
were encouraged to wear the colors of their favorite sports team.
Congratulations Clean Sweep Award Winning Classes!
Mr. Leblanc’s class
Mrs. Bockus’ class
Mrs. Yaglowski’s class
The Clean Sweep Award is monthly award handed out by our custodial staff. The award
is presented to those classes who do their part to help keep our school looking great.
Winning classes are chosen based upon the cleanliness of their classrooms over a four-
week period. Winning classes are given a class Hawk Card, enabling them to choose
from a variety of privileges.
After School Pick up Parking
When picking up your child at the end of the school day, please do not park next to the
yellow curb along the rear of the building. The yellow curbing indicates that the area is a
designated no parking zone.
School Cell Phone Policy
We’ve recently experienced some minor issues with student cell phones usage in school.
Below is the school policy regarding cell phones in school. The policy is consistent with
that of Tolland Middle School.
All electronic devices are to be turned off and stored away for the duration of the school
day (8:30 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.). This includes, but is not limited to cell phones, music
players, video systems, and video game systems. Cell phones and cell phone cameras that
are misused anywhere on school grounds and/or on any school field trip or function will
result in disciplinary action.

Dear Fifth Grade Parents:
On Tuesday, February 4th, the fifth grade students will have the unique opportunity to spend the
day and evening with a group of students from Canton High School. These high school
students are trained counselors who work with younger children as part of a program known as
Esteem.
Some of the topics covered in the Esteem program are:
Self-esteem
Awareness of drug and alcohol-related issues
Helping others
Understanding feelings
Developing coping skills
The Canton students and their two teacher-advisors will work along with our students and
teachers throughout the day in the TIS gymnasium. Our students will also take part in a group
presentation for parents that night. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this special
program on Tuesday, February 4th, from 6:00 - 7:15 PM.
An Esteem t-shirt has been ordered for each fifth grader. Students will wear the shirt during the
day and at the evening presentation to show their team wide commitment to this program.
Since the Canton students spend the entire day with us, we provide lunch and dinner for the
Esteem leaders. The cost for the program and t-shirt is $13 per child. Please send cash or
make a check payable to TIS SAA by Friday, January 24th.
We look forward to having you and your child experience this memorable day.
Sincerely,
The Fifth Grade Teachers
I read the Esteem letter and have included the $13.00 payment.

Unified Arts Update for January 2020
Art ~ Library ~ Music ~ Physical Education
Ms. Ballard - Art Teacher
Third Grade: Students have finished their mixed media painting with a beautiful snow scene
using colored pencils, crayons, and paint. They will now start a Value Painting for the remainder
of January. Value is an Element of Art that deals with lights and darks of a color.
Fourth Grade: Students have started a 3D Robot project using recycled items and paper mache
to construct their robot. Their robots must be freestanding and in the round. The size of the robot
will be between 8 inches and 12 inches tall or wide. Students will design their robot with a
specific super power in mind and incorporate that superpower into their robot design. An example
would be adding wings to their robot if the robot’s super power is that it can fly. This project will
take several months because it has multiple parts: construction, pasting, adding textures, and
painting. All fourth graders should bring their smocks to class.
Fifth Grade: The fifth graders will spend half of the month of January finishing up their
marionettes. We have to finish the marionettes by stringing them up and putting them on their
control bars, this might take us a couple of weeks. After our marionettes are done the fifth
graders will move on to a drawing assignment called Zentangle.
ART ROOM : The art room could use newspapers. Please, send in any amount of
newspaper you can!
Thank you!
Mrs. Hill - Library Media
Third grade: Students began a biography unit in January. They learned parts of a biography,
then they read a short biography about Martin Luther King, Jr. They practiced note taking skills
with a graphic organizer, picking out the important facts, using their text features skills. Then
they watched a clip of the “I Have a Dream” speech and participated in an interactive
PowerPoint timeline of important events in King’s life.
Fourth grade and Fifth grade: Students did a mini-research biography page on the life of
Martin Luther King, Jr. in the first few weeks of January. They also read about the beginning of
the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and answered questions about that topic. They
watched a clip of the “I Have a Dream” speech and participated in an interactive PowerPoint
timeline of important events in King’s life.
Ms. Baker - Music/Chorus
The composer of the month for January is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Grade 3 General Music: The third grade students will be starting a new unit focusing on
sixteenth note rhythms and rondo form. Students will also be starting to play recorders. In
addition, they will be learning folk songs based on Colonial Tolland which coincides with the
third grade Social Studies curriculum.
Grade 3 concert will be in March 24 with a Snow date of March 25. Please keep these dates
open.
Grade 4 General Music: The fourth graders will be learning about the music and geography of
North America and Native Americans. They will be playing recorders and Native American
instruments as well as dancing and performing folk tales in a readers theater format.
Grade 5 General Music: The fifth grade students will be doing a short unit on music technology
and graphic notation. Students will learn to compose and perform using the graphic notation
format seen on computers and programs like garageband. Thank you to the Tolland Education
Foundation for the grant which has made this music technology unit possible. They will begin
learning to play the ukulele beginning in February.
