Chief Minister of MK Stalin made an announcement under Rule 110 in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Speaking then, he said, “I take immense pride in making an announcement to honour Iyothee Thass Pandithar who made a significant contribution to the philosophical lineage of Tamil history after Thiruvalluvar, Avvaiyar, Kabilar and Vallalar”. He then said that no one can do politics in Tamil Nadu without using two words namely ‘Tamil’ and ‘Dravidians’. “Iyothee Thass Pandithar was the one who made these two words a symbol in the political arena and the one who carried them as weapons of knowledge. In the census of 1881, it was Pandithar who recorded the name 'Purva Tamilar' (Ancestral Tamils). The name of the organization he started in 1891 was 'Dravida Mahajana Sabha'. He started a magazine called 'Oru Paisa Tamizhan' in 1907 and ran the same magazine under the name 'Tamizhan'. He called the Tamils 'Indigenous Dravidians without caste differences'. That is why I mentioned that he used the two words ‘Tamil’ and ‘Dravidians’ as weapons of knowledge. Tamil Nadu politics is operating on the path he has paved,” Stalin added. Speaking on Iyothee Thass’ intellectual faculty, CM said, “He was a multi- talented writer, researcher, historian, anthropological thinker, publisher, journalist, physician, orator, linguist, neo theorist, mastermind and relentless warrior. When we think of his grandfather, Mr Kandhappan who gave to Ellis the Thirukkural manuscripts he had and brought Thirukkural in print, we should all bow down to the great service his family did for literature”. He then quoted Periyar’s statement, "Iyothee Tahss Pandit was the forerunner of my rationalist campaign and reformist ideas”. “So, I don't have to say anything beyond what he said. Iyothee Thass said that caste and religion are obstacles to the progress of India. He also said that great men are those who see their fellow humans as humans. This Government is proud to announce that a memorial will be built in North Chennai to honour the great Iyothee Thass Pandithar who lived between 1845 and 1914 on his 175th anniversary. Stating that the law is same for everybody, the high court questioned the authorities as to how there can be 500 persons gathered for protest when the guidelines do not permit it. The court was hearing a petition by Vasant Vihar Welfare Association which stated that the foreign nationals (refugees/ asylum seekers) have gathered outside the office of the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR) at B Block in South Delhi's Vasant Vihar since August 15, including lanes and parks adjoining it and residents are facing difficulties due to this. When the Centre's counsel referring to the Afghanistan's political crisis said the situation was not normal and unprecedented, the court made it clear that there was no question being unreasonably harsh to anybody but the law is same for everybody. Nobody is stopping them from protesting. Firstly they are at a wrong place. It is not a designated protest site. Plus, as per the COVID-19 guidelines, more than 100 people cannot gather. Coimbatore has made representation to the Chief Minister, Coimbatore District Administration and the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation expressing concern and seeking action regarding environmental hazards posed by lack of sustainable measures in waste management at the dump yard in Vellalore the sewage treatment plant (STP) at Nanjundapuram and Ukkadam.

In the representation, the citizen’s forum has pointed out that one of the serious problems encountered by the public is the foul smell emanating from the solid

waste dump area which aerially reaches up to Lakshmi Mills at Avinashi Road in Coimbatore.

Experts in the field of solid waste management are of the opinion that planting of medicinal plants like Vetrivaer and Nannaari which release large quantities

of oxygen around the boundaries of the processing plants will help to minimize the foul smell and reduce carbon monoxide emission, too, the forum members have stressed.

Citizen’s voice members have called for measures segregation of wastes into

different category which can be used for making good quality roads, as being done at many places.

The simple technology developed by the Thiagarajar College, Madurai may be utilized for solving this perennial problem.

Activists have suggested forming an Expert Committee (including qualified local people with knowledge about STPs) to look into issues and suggest pragmatic solutions. They have also stressed on the need for proper operation of the plant and timely availability of the required chemicals as they are of utmost importance to run the plant to meet with the required design conditions.

respondents ignore early signs of poor nerve health according to findings of the ‘P&G Nerve Health Survey’ conducted among 1800 respondents across 12 cities. This is more than the national average.

Conducted by HEAL Health and Hansa Research, and supported by Procter & Gamble Health Limited, the national survey highlights that while over 90% of the respondents believe that healthy nerves are important, only 38% know that nerves are different from blood vessels. The national survey results also revealed that 73% of respondents relied upon vegetables and 69% of respondents relied upon fruits

for vitamin B12, which are not a source. Results revealed limited knowledge amongst the masses about nerve health. While people had experienced symptoms related to nerve damage only 50% related it to nerve health.

“The P&G Nerve Health Survey was conducted towards

gauging the awareness levels and perceptions about nerve health and to understand if people can identify nerve-related discomforts”, said Milind Thatte, Managing Director - Procter & Gamble Health Limited. “The function of Vitamin B12 in cell formation and lipid metabolism is vital, which works wonders in improving the nervous system.

Thus, it is essential to include Vitamin B12 in one’s meal menu to ensure good nerve health,” says Dr A V Srinivasan, Emeritus Professor, The Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University, Former Head and Prof. of Neurology, Institute of Neurology Madras Medical College.

The App is the latest in a series of activities initiated by Cauvery Calling to intensify farmer outreach efforts on the ground to promote the economically lucrative and ecologically beneficial tree-based agriculture in the Cauvery basin districts of Karnataka, the Isha Foundation said in a statement.

The App was simultaneously launched in

the nine districts in which Cauvery Calling volunteers are currently working along with the Forest Department officials and 890 Mara Mitras, the statement read.

According to the Foundation, Karnataka Chief Secretary P Ravi Kumar, who launched the App, said the Krushi Aranya

Protsaha Yojane (KAPY) and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme are schemes by the Karnataka Government and Isha Foundation is creating demand generation.

"It is not right to say Isha Foundation was using government money to plant saplings. These are

government schemes. Isha is creating awareness by educating farmers about the schemes," Kumar was quoted as saying in the press release. The Foundation said the Cauvery Calling operation will cover 1,785 Gram Panchayats in 57 Taluks of the nine Cauvery river basin districts which are home to 24 lakh farmers. The campaign aims to plant 242 crore trees by farmers on their private farmlands in the river basin. It stated that the plantation drive will increase the farmers' income between 3 and 8 times besides promoting a host of ecological benefits such as soil rejuvenation, repletion of groundwater table and reviving biodiversity.

erODe SepT 3: Isha Foundation distributed 1.10 saplings

last financial year and planned to double it this year. Of the saplings 75 percent were timber species and the rest were fruit and flower yielding species. According to Isha Agro Forestry scheme coordinator Thamizhmaran and west zone nursery incharge Swami Satvika, Sadhguru's 2 crore tree plantation project was inaugurated by the late CM M Karunanidhi in 2007 and it got success. Then, Sadhguru, founder of Isha, started 'Rally for River' from Sept 3to Oct 2, 2018 and submitted a project report to PM Modi to protect over 50 rivers in the nation and then he started 'Cauvery Calling' motorcycle rally in September 2019. All such schemes focus on tree plantation to ensure more rain to save rivers, sustainable growth in agriculture, protect environment, restore soil wealth and check water pollution etc.

Green Hands: Under the Green Hands project, Isha

distributed timber saplings at a low price of Rs 3 to ryots and fruit bearing and fower yielding plants at Rs 7 through its 32 nurseries in TN. Among them, the nurseries at Tanjore, Erode, Cuddalore and Thiruvannamalai were major centres due to good water condition there and from there saplings were being transferred to many areas. In Cuddalore

alone, 40 lakh saplings are produced every year. In each centre 40-100 farm labours were working.

Know-how to ryots: Isha functionaries

Shankar and Anandh said the foundation itself arranges agriculture, horticulture and agro engineering experts in each district to go to farmers to enlighten them on the need to grow timber trees in waste lands and boundaries of lands. They give technical know-

how on raising suitable trees according to the agro climatic condition of the area and on organic farming and input production etc. It would help them get adequate income by selling trees after 2 or 3 decades.

Cauvery Calling: More thrust is given to raise more trees in the

Cauvery flowing 18 districts in TN and 9 districts in Karnataka under the Cauvery Calling project under which farmers were encouraged to raise trees. On an average 400 saplings can be planted in an acre. After 10 years, the land owner can get Rs 20 lakh by selling them. It would ensure sustainable income. In this regard, the foundation also signed MoU with TNAU and Horticulture College at Mettupalayam. The foundation targeted to double the plantation every year and raise 242 cr trees within 12 years.

FAO's concern:The Food and Agriculture

Organisation of UNO itself expressed its concern over

diminishing micro and macro nutrients in the soil in our nation during the past 30 years. The organic content in the land came down from 2-4 percent to 0.5 -0.12 due to overuse of chemical inputs in the land. So, curcumine content in turmeric in our nation is nearly 2.5 percent whereas it is 7 in Vietnam. Similar problem is existed in other farm products also. So, the only way to restore soil wealth, and ensure self sufficiency of ryots, organic farming is must. Growing more trees around farms and waste land would enrich the soil and ensure more rain.

Saplings giving culture:Isha's effort encouraged many to give saplings

of herbal, flower and fruit species in marriage and family functions in recent past by buying saplings from Isha nurseries in bulk. But, due to corona and curfew norms, the functions were restricted affecting the tree plantation move. The government itself has tree plantation scheme in private lands and social forestry schemes. Isha acts as a coordinator between the government and ryots to use the scheme.

In Karnataka government gives more support to Isha's scheme and efforts are made to get similar support from TN government. For more details, contact 94425 90068.

has honoured four people, including two from Kerala, with 50,000 dirhams each (10 lakh Indian rupees), for saving a pregnant cat.

On August 24, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, posted a video on his Twitter page. It was a video of four men together rescuing a pregnant cat trapped on the second floor.

He also mentioned in the tweet, “We are proud and happy to see incidents like this in our beautiful city. Tell me if anyone recognizes

these heroes who are not celebrated. I want to thank them"

In the video, taken in Dubai's Deira Frij Murar, a cat trapped on the second floor comes to the edge. Four men were holding a cloth to protect the cat.

Suddenly the cat jumps and falls safely into the net they had spread. Then the cat gets up and walks away.

cheNNAI, Sep.3The Madras High Court has on Thursday

issued an order to allow only native breeds in Jallikattu thereby banning the foreign breeds. The remarkable judgement has come during the hearing of a PIL.

Suresh, a resident of Chennai, had filed a Public Interest Litigation(PIL) in the Madras High Court, seeking the order to permit only the native breeds of bulls to participate in Jallikattu, Manjuvirattu, Oormadu, Vadamadu or Vadamanjivirattu, Eruduttu Viduthal competitions thereby prohibit the participation of foreign/crossbred bulls. The petition stated that it would be convenient for the tamers to embrace the humps easily in the case of native bulls, which is not compliant with the hybrid ones.

The case was heard by a bench comprising Justices Kirubakaran and Velumani. In the judgment issued at that time, they pointed out

that the law enacted in 2017 to allow Jallikattu has been amended to protect the country's cattle and to protect the culture of the Tamils.

Following this, the judges rejected the government's contention that foreign breeds should not be barred from participating in Jallikattu. They thus ordered that only indigenous varieties of bulls should be allowed to participate in Jallikattu and that foreign, crossbred bulls are banned henceforth.

Tokyo paralympics: Suhas, Tarun, manoj qualify for men's singles semifinals in badminton eventTOKYO, Sep 3 (pTI)

Indian shuttlers Suhas Yathiraj and Tarun Dhillon continued their impressive run, notching up contrasting wins in their respective second group match to qualify for the semifinals in the badminton competition of the Tokyo Paralympics here on Friday.

Manoj Sarkar, who competes in SL3, also qualified for the semifinals after winning his second and last group stage match at the Yoyogi national stadium here.

Suhas, a world number 3 in SL4 class, took 19 minutes to get rid of Indonesia's Hary Susanto 21-6 21-12 in group A, while Tarun, seeded second, recovered from a mid-game slump to outwit Korea's Shin Kyung Hwan 21-18 15-21 21-17 in a group

B SL4 match. Suhas, the district magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, will face France's top seed Lucas Mazur, while Tarun will cross swords with Indonesia's Fredy Setiawan next later in the day.

With two wins out of three matches so far in their respective groups, both Suhas and Tarun have qualified for semifinals and might face-off in the knockout stage. Suhas

has an impairment in one of his ankles, while Tarun has restricted knee movement following a severe injury that he suffered at the age of eight.

In SL3 class, Manoj secured a 21-16 21-9 victory over Ukraine's Oleksandr Chyrkov to make it to the knockout stage after finishing at the second spot in group A behind world no 1 Pramod Bhagat.

If you are given responsibility, you have to perform either by hook or crook, says 'beefy' ShardullONDON, Sep 3 (pTI)

Shardul Thakur, who on Thursday pipped Ian Botham's record by hitting the fastest Test fifty on English soil, feels that when one is entrusted with responsibility, he has to "perform by hook or crook".

Shardul hit his second Test half-century off 31 balls and beat Ian Botham's 35-year-old record as he helped India's total attain a semblance of respectability.

"You have to take responsibility whether you are a pacer or a batter.

If you are playing for India, so whenever you get a chance you have t o shoulder responsibility by hook or by crook," Shardul said after day's play when asked if the assignment of scoring runs every time adds to the pressure.

"For me, it was a challenge and whenever I get to bat, I have to create such an impact that it opens the door for my team's victory," the Mumbai all-rounder said having already hit a fifty in India's victory in Brisbane earlier this year.

In the Indian dressing

room, he is referred to as 'Beefy' which is legendary Ian Botham's famous nickname.

"Pretty happy getting so much love from teammates that they want to call me by a certain nickname," he smiled.

He clarified that Ravindra Jadeja was sent up the order to keep the left-right combination going.

"Whether Rishabh goes or Jaddu goes, it doesn't really matter. We have seen Jadeja

score crucial runs and bat patiently. It was just to use left right combo, we send him up the order," said Shardul.

The advice given to him by coaches was to play as straight as possible and he tried doing that.

"The more you play with straight bat in English conditions, more runs you will get.

The ball swings excessively so its better to play straight.

My coaches tell me to play

with straight bat and score as much as possible with the tail." The pull shot to get his fifty was according to him his "favourite" of the three sixes and it helped that the ball swung less with no overhead clouds at the time when he batted.

The target is to restrict England to a low first innings score and take the game from thereon "If you look, our total (191) is not very high.

We have an amazing opportunity to restrict them to low total and game will be neck and neck," he said.

Amateur Sneha and teen pro Jahanvi tied for lead at hero wpGTGUrUGrAm, Sep 3 (pTI)

Amateur Sneha Singh and teenager Jahanvi Bakshi shared the honours after a marathon second day in the seventh leg of the Hero WPGT here on Thursday.

While Sneha rode on her first round 69, Jahanvi had a bogey free 70 in the second round.

When action returned on the Hero Women's Tour for the second half of the season, the players were barely able to go through nine holes on Wednesday due to inclement weather. So, they had to endure a long day with 27 holes on Thursday.

Sneha, who has already won on the Pro Tour, was 3-under through the front nine on Wednesday. She

played the back nine in even par for a superb first round of 3-under 69 which had a total of six birdies and three bogeys. In the second round, which commenced soon after the first round ended, Sneha shot 2-over 74 with bogeys on two of the Par-5s. She had three birdies against five bogeys.

Jahanvi, who had a 73 in the first round, carded the best score of the second round with a 2-under 70

that included two birdies and no bogeys. She looked consistent and confident at a course that has often proved a struggle even for the best. Amateur Avani Prashanth, who had a 74 in the first round, seemed determined to make up for that as she made the turn in a superb 4-under 32.

However, she went 3-over 39 on the back nine for a second round of 71.

With a 36-hole total of 145, she is two shots behind Sneha and Jahanvi. Seher Atwal, who had a front nine 35 on Wednesday, was also even for the second half and in the second round she dropped to 77. The final round will be played on Friday with Sneha and Avani battling professionals Jahanvi and Seher.

3rd 50-over match: Oman beat mumbai by 2 wickets

mUScAT, Sep 3 (pTI) Oman stunned India's

domestic cricket giants Mumbai by two wickets in a thrilling third 50-over match here on Thursday with home team's Kaleemullah Kaleemullah sealing the game with a last ball six.

Mumbai, after losing the just concluded T20 series 1-2, were unbeaten in the 50-over series so far, but the Oman batsmen held their nerves to script a memorable win in the third game. Oman first shot out Mumbai for below-par 239 after putting them into bat despite Yashasvi Jaiswal's gritty 90 and a well made 55 by skipper Shams Mulani.

The hosts then chased down the target on the last ball with Ayaan Khan playing a key part in the victory with a stroke-filled 91.

Japan likely to get new pm as Suga bows out of party voteTOKYO, Sep 3

Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga won't run for the leadership of the governing party, indicating he will step down as Japanese leader at the end of this month, a party official said Friday.

Suga told executives of his ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Friday that he will not run in the leadership race set for Sept 29, LDP Secretary General

Toshihiro Nikai told reporters. LDP has the majority in Parliament, meaning the new government leader likely will

be whoever is elected the party's leader.

The move is largely a political decision so the LDP can have a fresh leader before national elections later this year. The lower house term ends in late October and elections for the new Parliament must be held by late November.

Suga has faced criticism and nosediving support ratings over slow coronavirus measures and holding the

Olympics despite the public's health concerns.

Suga took office in mid-September a year ago after his predecessor Shinzo Abe resigned due to health problems.

Suga, the son of a strawberry farmer from Japan's northern prefecture of Akita, enjoyed support ratings as high as 70 per cent early in his tenure because he was a leader from the common people rather than blue-blood

political families like Abe.Suga introduced

a series of pragmatic measures including digital transformation and administrative reforms, but his support ratings slid quickly over his virus measures seen as too slow and too small to prevent growing outbreaks.

In the latest media surveys, support ratings have declined to around 26 per cent.

world united in what they expect Taliban to do for recognition in Afghanistan: white housewAShINGTON, Sep 3 (pTI)

The world is united in what they expect the Taliban to do to get recognition in Afghanistan from the international community, the White House said noting that it is for China to decide where it would like to stand on the situation.

The world is united in what they expect the Taliban to do, which is allow people who want to depart the country to depart. And China has to decide where they are in that effort, White House

Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily news conference on Thursday.

United States President Joe Biden, she said, has said many times that there are a few countries that wanted

the US to stay in Afghanistan more than China and Russia because it would have tied up American owned resources, the US military and its financial assets and options.

Our leverage over the

Taliban is a range of things. I mean, one is, of course, access to the global marketplace, which is not just China.

It is a range of money that is in the New York Federal Reserve. That was the Afghan government's money that they currently don't have access to, she said.

The US is working with a coalition of 100 countries around the world that have signed this statement on what their expectations are of the Taliban, she said, adding that the US is working with the United Nations Security

Council (UNSC). Responding to a question, the White House Press Secretary ruled out lifting sanctions against the Taliban.

No one should assess that we are currently considering an easing of sanctions on the Taliban. That is not actively being discussed or pursued. We've not reduced sanctions, pressure on the Taliban leaders or the significant restrictions on their access to the international financial system, she said.

We will judge, and we want to make this very clear,

we are going to judge the Taliban by their actions and will stay in close coordination with the international community on any steps that we take moving forward.

Now at the same time, we also want to ensure there is assistance to the Afghan people: humanitarian assistance and other assistance to keep them afloat and make sure we provide that from the international community at this point in time, Psaki said.

She reiterated that the Taliban is not a good actor.

pakistan urges international effort to help AfghanistanUNITeD NATIONS, Sep 3

Pakistan is urging the international community to adopt a three-pronged approach to Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover: quickly deliver aid to 14 million people facing a hunger crisis, promote an inclusive government, and work with the Taliban to attack all terrorist groups in the country. Pakistan's ambassador to the United Nations, Munir Akram, laid out his government's vision for a future international role in Afghanistan in an Associated Press interview on Thursday, saying Pakistan has been in contact with regional countries and the

broader global community on working together on the three priorities. He stressed that humanitarian help must be the top priority and called it very unhelpful for Afghanistan's assets to have been frozen, by the United States and others, because this leaves the Taliban with no access to dollars or foreign exchange to buy food or import oil. There will be inflation. The

prices in Afghanistan will rise further. The poverty level will rise, Akram warned. You will then have a refugee crisis which is exactly what the West is afraid of. The Taliban swiftly captured territory in Afghanistan in the final days of last month's withdrawal of US forces at the end of America's 20-year war, prompting many Afghans to blame neighbouring Pakistan for the insurgents' success in taking control of their country. They pointed to the Taliban's use of Pakistani territory in multiple ways, including allowing its leaders and their families in the country, and providing treatment to its wounded fighters.

Kim orders tougher virus steps after N Korea shuns vaccinesSeOUl, Sep 3

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered officials to wage a tougher epidemic prevention campaign in our style after he turned down some foreign COVID-19 vaccines offered via the UN-backed immunisation programme.

During a Politburo meeting Thursday, Kim said officials must bear in mind that tightening epidemic prevention is the task of paramount importance which must not be loosened even a moment, the official Korean Central News Agency reported Friday.

While stressing the need for material and technical means of virus prevention and increasing health workers' qualifications, Kim also called for further rounding off our style epidemic prevention system, KCNA said.

Kim previously called for North Koreans to brace for prolonged COVID-19 restrictions, indicating the nation's borders would stay closed despite worsening economic and food conditions. Since the start of the pandemic, North Korea has used tough quarantines and border closures to

prevent outbreaks, though its claim to be entirely virus-free is widely doubted.

On Tuesday, UNICEF, which procures and delivers vaccines on behalf of the COVAX distribution program, said North Korea proposed its allotment of about 3 million Sinovac shots be sent to severely affected countries instead. North Korea was also slated to receive AstraZeneca shots through COVAX, but their delivery has been delayed.

According to UNICEF, North Korea's health ministry still said it would continue to communicate with COVAX over future vaccines.

Some exports believe North Korea may want other vaccines, while questioning the effectiveness of Sinovac and the rare blood clots seen in some recipients of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

biden says Ida, wildfires show 'climate crisis' has struckwAShINGTON, Sep 3

President Joe Biden on Thursday pledged robust federal help for the Northeastern and Gulf states battered by Hurricane Ida and for Western states beset by wildfires with the catastrophes serving as deadly reminders that the climate crisis has arrived.

These extreme storms, and the climate crisis, are here, Biden said in a White House speech.

We must be better prepared. We need to act.

The president said he will further

press Congress to pass his nearly 1 trillion infrastructure bill to improve roads, bridges, the electric grid and sewer systems.

The proposal intends to ensure that the vital networks connecting cities and states and the country as a whole can withstand the flooding, whirlwinds and damage caused by increasingly dangerous weather.

Biden stressed that the challenge transcends the politics of a deeply divided nation because of the threats posed by the storms and fires.

It's a matter of life and death and we're all in this together, the president said.

TOKYO, Sep 3 (pTI) India's Praveen Kumar

clinched the silver medal in the men's high jump T64 event of the Paralympics, taking the country's haul to 11 in the ongoing Games here on Friday.

The 18-year-old Kumar, competing in his debut Paralympics, set a new Asian record with a 2.07m jump to finish behind Great Britain's Jonathan Broom-Edwards, who notched up his season's best effort of 2.10m for the gold.

This was also Kumar's personal best performance

and his first major medal since taking up the sport in 2019. The teenager is a Noida resident and is now the youngest medal winner in the Indian contingent here. The bronze went

to Rio Games champion Maciej Lepiato of Poland who produced an effort of 2.04m. T64 classification is for athletes with a leg amputation, who compete with prosthetics in a

standing position. T44, the disability classification that Kumar belongs to but is eligible to compete in T64, is for athletes with a leg deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power or impaired passive range of movement in the legs.

His impairment, which is congenital, affects the bones that connect his hip to his left leg.

The ongoing Games are turning out to be India's best ever and the nation has so far claimed two gold, six silver and three bronze medals. Kumar is the second

teenager in the Indian contingent after shooter Avani Lekhara to win a medal at the Games. Lekhara had won a gold and is 19 years old.

The track and filed events were anticipated to give India a good medal haul and the script is unfolding just as it was expected.

Eight of India's 11 medals have come from athletics, including one gold in men's javelin throw through Sumit Antil (F64).

India have so far won five silver medals in the athletics arena along with a bronze.

New DelhI , Sep 3 India's Covid chart showed improvement

today, with the country recording 45,352 cases, a drop of 3.6% from yesterday. About 366 deaths were recorded during the period, according to the Health Ministry. Active cases constitute 1.22% of total cases.

Kerala contributed 32,097 new COVID-19 infections and 188 deaths in the past 24 hours. The test positivity rate was found to be 18.41 per cent after testing of 1,74,307 samples in the last 24 hours, according to a state government release.

Kerala, which recorded the country's first coronavirus case in early 2020, has been reporting in excess of 30,000 daily cases for the past few days.

Maharashtra witnessed a slight dip in new infections as the western state reported 4,342 in the past 24 hours. No death due to the virus was recorded in Delhi for the second consecutive day on Thursday, while 39 fresh cases of the infection were reported with a positivity rate of 0.06 per cent, according to city health department.

This is the 21st time since the second wave of the pandemic hit the national capital that zero fatality due to the viral disease was

logged in a day.The active cases increased to 3,99,778 comprising 1.22 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate stands 97.45 per cent, the Union Health Ministry said. The daily positivity rate now stands at 2.72 per cent.

The cumulative COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country crossed the 67 crore mark. India has been running the largest vaccination drive against COVID-19

since January 16 this year.A new variant - C.1.2 - first detected in South Africa in May - has become the new cause for worry in the middle of a Delta-driven surge in many countries. Scientists say the strain may have a greater ability to evade antibodies that protect the body.

The development has forced India to revise its guideline to include visitors from seven more countries - South Africa,

Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe - to carry a negative RT-PCR result not older than 72 hours on arrival. Earlier, the rule was only applicable for arrivals from the UK, Europe and Middle East.

India is still not out of the woods when it comes to the second wave of COVID-19 and people should celebrate festivals like Diwali, Eid, Navratri and Ganesh Chaturthi at home without gathering in large numbers, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

Patients who have contracted coronavirus have been found to have damage to kidney, a study found.

Even non-hospitalized patients with no renal problems have almost a twofold higher risk of developing end-stage kidney disease, compared with someone who never had Covid, the findings in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology noted.

The coronavirus has killed at least 4,529,715 people since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, according to news agency AFP. The US is the worst-affected country with 642,081 deaths, followed by Brazil with 581,150, India with 439,529, Mexico 260,503 and Peru 198,329.

administration levied a fine of Rs 5 lakhs for a former AIADMK Councillor in Coonoor for illicit removal of soil, which caused heavy damage to a nearby hospital building on Thursday.

The government has imposed various restrictions on construction work in the Nilgiris district.

Despite this, the work of removing mud and rocks with the help of earthmover has been going on day and night at a place near the Coonoor municipal office, owned by AIADMK former councillor Yogesh for the

last one month. The people of the area

have been strongly opposed to this. In this situation, a part of the retaining wall of the nearby government hospital suddenly collapsed on Thursday. Thus the hospital building stood unstable without support.

The path to the X-ray centre was closed.

The power supply to the hospital was cut off and the patients suffered as the power poles also fell off. Sub-collector Deepana Vishweswari, who came to know about this, inspected it and ordered to stop the work.

The probe revealed that in the name of erecting a barrier wall, the soil was removed illegally.

Following this, former AIADMK councillor Yogesh was fined Rs 5 lakh.

The sub-collector ordered the construction of a retaining wall with soil bags in the first phase without damaging the buildings.

Union Soil Conservation Officer Manivannan inspected and confirmed the illegal removal of soil. Work is underway to erect a new retaining wall as the hospital building is in danger of collapsing at any moment if it rains.

Pattali Makkal Katchi’s leader of legislative assembly GK Mani, along with MLAs Venkateswaran, Arul, Sivakumar and Sathasivam meeting Chief Minister MK Stalin to express their gratitude for the announcement of a memorial

for the martyrs of the 1987 Villupuram reservation struggle.

About 28.90 crore households in India use cooking gas cylinders. The union government turned the poor people

who were using firewood into consumers of cooking gas, saying it was unhealthy. Now in the name of a price hike, it is the same Union government that is making all families suffer.

The present government has gradually reduced the subsidies introduced during the last Congress regime and has now pushed it to a non-subsidized state. For the current BJP government, crude oil is a finished resource. Some countries rule the world with their entire business in hand.

In India, 80 percent of the demand for petroleum products is imported. As this trade is entirely dependent on imports, the price is determined by the fluctuations of the international market and the value of the Indian rupee against the US dollar. This price hike is an echo of that.

The union government last year cut down taxes on large corporations from 36 percent to 25 percent. It also announced a revenue shortfall of Rs 1.54 lakh crores. It is a pity that the union government, which cares about such owners of large companies, does not care about the poor people.

Why is the central government refusing to subsidize cooking gas, which is essential for India's poor citizens, who pay taxes on even the candles and matches they buy? When will the attitude of butter for one eye and lime for the other change?

KOhImA, Sep 3 (pTI) The School Education

Department of Nagaland is willing to open schools for classes 9 and 10 to facilitate offline teaching but the final decision will be made by the High Powered Committee (HPC) on COVID-19 headed by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, an official said on Thursday.

Educational institutions of the state were shut since April 29 due to a spurt in coronavirus cases and online classes were being taken

However, physical classes for higher secondary and college students resumed from July 26.

"The education department is of the view that classes 9 and 10 can be taken offline, but the decision to open schools has to be taken by the High Powered Committee," Principal Director of School Education, Shanavas C, said.

If the HPC seeks the opinion of the department, it would suggest phase-wise opening of schools starting with classes 9 and 10 as the daily Covid positivity rate is now low, he said while interacting with the media on the sidelines of a programme.

Nagaland's COVID-19 positivity rate was 3.81 per cent on Wednesday.

bhUbANeSwAr, Sep 3 (pTI) The Odisha Assembly was adjourned

till 4 PM within one minute of its sitting on the third day of the monsoon session on Friday following uproar by opposition Congress alleging a scam in the recruitment process of the state Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

The main opposition BJP, however, alleged that the House was deliberately adjourned to avoid a discussion on the "worsening" law and order in the state for which the party had given notice and

it was also accepted by the Speaker."The House was adjourned within

one minute even before one question was discussed.

It is now clear that there has been a secret deal between the ruling BJD and the Congress to avoid a discussion on law and order," BJP chief whip Mohan Majhi said."

This is something like match-fixing. As per the secret deal, the Congress raised the recruitment scam issue and

created din based on which, the Speaker adjourned the House.

Law and order issues could not be discussed. We were supposed to raise the law minister's alleged involvement in the Mahanga double murder and other such cases," Majhi told reporters outside the House.

The alleged recruitment scam issue was raised by Congress Legislature Party leader Narasingha Mishra as soon as the House assembled for the Question Hour at 10.30 AM..

Odisha's GST Enforcement Wing has unearthed a Rs 323 crore GST fraud and arrested two masterminds including a charted accountant in the fake invoicing activities in the state, an official statement said.

The state GST Enforcement Wing Thursday arrested Amit Kumar Agrawal, a Chartered Accountant, Jharsuguda and Satindra Kumar Yadav, proprietor of S.S Syndicate, Bhubaneswar. The duo is considered as the masterminds involved in the

creation and operation of 13 fictitious firms, a statement issued by the Commissionerate of Commercial Tax and GST, Cuttack said.

While Agrawal was arrested in Jharsuguda, Yadav was nabbed in Bhubaneswar, it said.

The two masterminds in collusion with others, have availed and passed on bogus input tax credit (ITC) worth Rs 323 crore by raising fake purchase and sale invoices to the tune of Rs 1,819 crore in the name of 13 fictitious/non-existent business entities. Taking advantage of simplification of GST newly

introduced, the fraud has been committed by them, the statement said.

The investigation took its origin from interception of goods vehicle supported by documents issued in the name of non-existing and fake firms. "During investigation, it was found that the route of this tax fraud has spread to different states like West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Delhi.

The State Enforcement Officers have moved to different states and conducted investigation taking the help of the jurisdictional officer of the concerned states," it said.
