Transcript of Tips to Help Protect Your Child's Privacy Online
Create Strong PasswordsIf you aren’t sure how to create a strong password, use a password methodology service like Diceware.
Don’t Ignore Privacy SettingsTake advantage of the privacy settings that are offered on almost every social media website, and set them based on your needs.
Consider Photo Encryption SoftwareCertain programs can allow your pictures to be seen only by the people who have the password that you gave them.
Avoid Sharing Names or Personal DetailsEven if your accounts are private, you may want to avoid sharing your child’s name or any personal information such as birthdays.
Use Low-Resolution PhotosLowering the quality (“resolution”) of photos can keep other people from printing the photos or from increasing the size of the photos.
Stop Using Location ServicesWhen posting images to social media, turn off your location services to avoid revealing the location where the picture was uploaded from.
Teach Your ChildrenYou manage your child’s online privacy now, but you should share your knowledge about privacy, the Internet, and privacy issues when your child is ready to begin spending time online.
For information about how closely to monitor your child’s online presence, visit our Gerber Life blog.
