“Broadlyspeaking,”WinstonChurchillmused,“humanbeingsmaybedividedintothreeclasses:thosewhoarebilledtodeath,thosewhoareworriedtodeath,andthosewhoareboredtodeath.”
Certainly,manyadultsfitalltoowellintooneorallofthosecategories.Growingolderoftenmeansslidingintoamonotonouscareerandgivingupone’sinterestsandhobbies.Theresultispredictable,buttragic:boredom,restlessness,anxiety,andevendepression.

WorkLikeaSlave:HustlingandFindingYourVocation
Findworkyouenjoy(butnotnecessarilybynavelgazing).Churchillbelievedthatinadditiontothethreeclassesofpeoplementionedabove,the“rational,industrious,useful”portionofthepopulationcouldbedividedintotwogroups:

Thecommonwisdomthesedaysonhowtoretainyouryouthfulzealintoadulthoodfollowsthelineofavoidingcommitmentsandresponsibilitiesliketheplague.Remainunattached;liveonlyforyourself.
There’sonlyoneproblemwiththisapproach—inseekingperpetualyouth,itdeniesoneofthestrongestinclinationsofchildhood:beingeffectiveintheworld.

Inthe1930s,whenChurchillwasalreadyapproachinghis60s,theprevailingwisdomwasthathischancesofeverbecomingprimeministerwerealmostnil.WhenaBritishdelegationofMPsledbyLadyAstortraveledtotheSovietUnionandmetwithStalinin1931,theRussianleaderaskedthemaboutrisingpoliticiansbackinEngland,andinparticularaboutChurchill.“Churchill?”Astorexclaimedwithascornfullaugh,“Oh,he’sfinished.”

ThesecretbehindChurchill’sherculeanproductivitymayseemlikeaparadox:anequallyproductiveuseofhisleisuretime!

Churchillbelievedthatoscillatingbetweendifferentactivitiesinthiswayactuallyprovidedsuperiorrejuvenationtoone’smindthanevenaboutoffull-onrelaxation:

Forthisreason,Churchillrecommendedthateveryonehaveafewhobbies.Withinthecultivationofstimulatingpastimeslaytheantidotebothtobeing“worriedtodeath”and“boredtodeath.”
