HOW TO WRITE COVER LETTERS

Tailor each cover letter to the position and job description so that you don't have to write acompletely new resume every time you apply for a new job.

Cite the position title and job number (if any) in the 1st paragraph. State how youmeet/beat the position requirements in the 1st or 2nd paragraph.

HOW TO WRITE COVER LETTERS

Use wording directly from the job ad orbulletin as topic headings in your letter

Under each topic heading , cite bysection the number of years of specificexperience, skills, duties andaccomplishments.

Because you're using language fromthe bulletin, you are giving the ratersexactly the information they're lookingfor.



COVER LETTER WRITING GUIDELINES

Header

A cover letter should begin withboth you and the employer's contactinformation (name, address, phonenumber, email) followed by the date.

If this is an email rather than anactual letter, include your contactinformation at the end of the letter,after your signature.




Salutation

Begin your cover letter salutation with "Dr./Mr./Ms. Last Name."

If you do not know the employer's last name, simply write, "Dear Hiring Manager."



Introduction

Begin your introduction by stating what job you are applying for.

Explain where you heard about the job, particularly if you heard about it from acontact associated with the company.

Briefly mention how your skills and experience match the company and/or position;this will give the employer a preview of the rest of your letter.





Body

In a paragraph or two, explain why you are interested in the job and why you make an excellent candidate for the position.

Mention specific qualifications listed in the job posting, and explain how you meet those qualifications.



Closing

In the closing section of your coverletter, restate how your skills make youa strong fit for the company and/orposition.

State that you would like theopportunity to interview or discussemployment opportunities.

Explain what you will do to follow up,and when you will do it. Thank theemployer for his/her consideration.

Signature

End your cover letter with yoursignature, handwritten, followed byyour typed name.

If this is an email, simply includeyour typed name, followed by yourcontact information.
