SweepmeshingisameshingmethodavailableinANSYSMeshingthatisimportantforallCFDuserstounderstandandcanbereadilyusedtomaintain
highsolveraccuracyatthesametimeasreducingmeshcellcounts(leadingtoaseriousspeedupinsolvetimes).
TheSweepMethodbeginsbymeshingaparticularsourcesurfaceusingeithertheautomaticglobalsettings,oranylocalsizingcontrols/inflationlayers
thathavebeenappliedbytheuser.Itwillthensweepthesourcemesh(whichcanrepresentanyarbitrarycrosssection)throughthebody,spacingitbya
certainincrementaldimensionorbysplittingthesweptsidefacesintoadesirednumberofdivisions.
SweepMeshExamples
TofullyutilisethebenefitsoftheSweepMethod,itisusefultoconsiderwhichregionsofourdomainwillusetheSweepMethodduringthegeometrystage
(inANSYSDesignModelerorwhencreatingyourfluiddomaininyouroriginalCADsoftware).Thisallowsustoappropriatelydecomposeorsliceour
domainintoacombinationofindividuallysweepablebodies.
ItisusefulwhenyoufirstopenANSYSMeshingtoRightclickonMeshinthelefthandmodeltreeandchoosetheoptiontoShow>Sweepable
Bodies.Uponchoosingthisoption,anybodieswithinyourassemblythatcanbesweptautomaticallywillbeshowningreenonyourscreen.

ShowingSweepableBodies
Ifyouexpectedthatsomethingshouldhavebeensweepablebutitisnotshowningreen,thenyoumayneedtodecomposethedomainfurthersuchthat
anyproblematicbodieshaveatopologythatcanbeswept.Oftentheproblemisduetosomesmallsliversurfaceorotherareathatisinhibitingtheregular
gridlikemapmeshingofallsidefaces(alongthedirectionofthesweep)whichsimplyneedtobecleanedupbeforethiscanoccur.Thiscanbedone
eitherbackinDesignModeler,orusingVirtualTopologytoolsrighthereinANSYSMeshing.
Onceyouarehappywiththegeometry,youcaninsertasweepmethodbyRightClickingonMeshintheOutlineTreeandchoosingtoInsert>Method.
WethenchangethetypetoSweep,andchoosethebodythatweaimtosweep.
Ifwerequireinflationlayers,whichwegenerallydo(andwilldiscussinafuturepost),thenwechoosethesourcefacefortheSweepMethod(orfor
additionalcontrol,boththesourceandtargetfaces).Thisisrequiredsothatthemeshingapplicationknowsexplicitlywhichfacetomeshfirstbefore
sweepingthismeshedcrosssectionthroughtherestofthebody.
Atthispoint,wecanchoosetocreateaninitialmeshtoconfirmthatthesweptmeshcanbecreatedasexpected.Wecanthenapplyadditionalfacesizing
andinflationtothesourcefaceandgenerateafinalsweptmeshforthebody.Youcanseeintheimagebelowthatthesourcefaceontheendofthe
cylinderhasbeenmeshed,whichwasthenbroughtthroughthesweptsectionatspecifiedintervalsresultinginamappedquad(rectangular)meshonthe
sidefacesofthecylinder.
UnstructuredSweptMeshwithInflation
Ifthemeshonthesourcefacewasalsoentirelycomposedofaquadsurfacemesh,thentheentiremeshgeneratedwouldbehexahedral.Inthisparticular
case,wehavestartedwithtriangularsurfaceelementsonthesourceface(withquadelementsinthecriticalinflationlayerregion),whichresultsinahybrid
prism/hexmeshwithinthemeshedvolume.Theadvantageofthisapproachisthatitwillyieldmoreaccurateresultsthanafulltetrahedralmesh,inamuch
shortertimeduetoareducedtotalnumberofcells.Thisisparticularlytrueinflowalignedgeometriessuchasinternalflowthroughpipesorducts
witharbitrarilycomplexcrosssectionalshapes.
