This guy is walking with his friend, who happens to be a psychologist. Hesays to this friend, "I'm a walkingeconomy." The friend asks, "Howso?" "My hair line is in recession, mystomach is a victim of inflation, and

both of these together are putting meinto a deep depression!"

A salesman, tired of his job, gave itup to become a policeman. Severalmonths later, a friend asked him how

he liked his new role. "Well," he re-plied, "the pay is good and the hoursaren't bad, but what I like best is thatthe customer is always wrong."

One day down by a river, a preacherhad just baptized a young lady. A fewminutes later, a drunk, non-religiousman walked by the river. The preacher said to him, "Are youready to find Jesus?"The drunk said yes. The preacher gothim in the water, dipped him in andthen raised him back up. He said,"Have you found Jesus?"The drunk said no.The preacher again dipped him in andraised him back up. The preacher said,"Have you found Jesus?"The drunk again said no.The preacher dipped him and raisedhim up for a third time. He said,"Have you found Jesus?"The drunk said, "Are you sure he fellin here?"

God was sitting in heaven one daywhen a scientist said to Him,"God, we don't need you anymore.Science has finally figured out a wayto create life out of nothing - in otherwords, we can now do what you didin the beginning."

"Oh, is that so? Tell Me..." repliesGod. "Well," says the scientist, "wecan take dirt and form it into the like-ness of you and breathe life into it,thus creating man.""Well, that's very interesting...showMe." So the scientist bends down tothe earth and starts to mould the soilinto the shape of a man."No, no, no..." interrupts God, "Getyour own dirt."

Bob went over to his friend Joe'shouse and was amazed at how wellJoe treated his wife. He often told herhow attractive she was, complimentedher on her cooking and showered herwith hugs and kisses."Gee," Bob remarked later, "you real-ly make a big fuss over your wife"."I started to appreciate her more aboutsix months ago," Joe said. "It has re-vived our marriage and we couldn't behappier."Inspired, Bob hurried home, huggedhis wife and told her how much heloved her and said he wanted to hearall about her day. But she burst intotears. "Honey," Bob said, "whats' thematter?". "This has been the worstday," she replied. "This morning Billyfell off his bike and broke his ankle, then the washing machine broke. Nowto top it off, you come home drunk !".

A Nenagh company has launched anew product that will help peoplesave significantly on their electricitybills. Watt A Saver Ltd. offer newproducts that will enable customersto save up to 30% on their energybill.

Three local men are spearheading theenterprise. Michael Cleere, formermanaging director at Carey’s Glass,Roger Murphy, who was a qualitymanager in Carey’s Glass and Tho-mas Hogan a local electrical contrac-tor and engineer.

They have established the businessusing German Technology that re-duces energy consumption by regu-lating the flow of electricity andconverting it into more efficient elec-tricity. It seems that UK companies inferringthey are Google are scamming Irishcompanies again. Previously in May2009 it came to the attention of SianPhillips at Whatswhat.ie that a UKcompany was calling companies ontheir online Irish business directory.

Sian Phillips is still trying to warn allIrish businesses about this scam. “Wehave over 66,700 companies listed andbelieve they have contacted 1,000’s todate.  This company was calledMatchmaker Marketing but they arenow using different names and target-ing Irish companies heavily again.

The problem is that this company in-fers they are Google from the start ofthe conversation and are tricking Irishbusinesses into thinking they are beingcalled by Google so the call musttherefore be bona fide and are handingover their credit card details. Theypromise to get you on the first page ofGoogle but they do not tell you thefull story. You’re paying for Googleadwords and you’re not told the valueof the adwords, traffic they produce orthe limit being set monthly on yourcampaign. There are legitimate com-panies in Ireland that can help youwith Google adwords and you havefull control of what is happening andwon’t be paying over the top.

There has been lots of progression intrying to stop this happening andWhatswhat.ie have been helping withthis. The original name of the compa-ny mentioned is Matchmaker Market-ing – based in Cheshire in the UK.From the information and over 200emails Whatswhat gave to Googlethey started an investigation and thatcompany no longer have a Google ad-

words accreditation and were stoppedfrom using the Google logo illegally.Since then the company have adoptednew aliases and we’d like to let youknow the new names so that you areforewarned. The other names areSphere Marketing, Storm Media, Ze-nith Marketing and Top Spot Market-ing. There are probably more andwe’d welcome any information youmay have. Despite their claims theyare NOT an official Google reseller orGoogle affiliated. They are using theGoogle logo illegally.”

Google have given this statement:-

“Google has set up an authorised re-seller programme in the UK and Ire-land to ensure small businesses canget the best help and advice on theironline marketing activity. We wouldurge businesses to research agenciesonline before working with them toensure you get the best from yourmarketing spend.”

It is important that everyone is warnedabout this in order to stop this happen-ing to the small businesses in Ireland;especially in this time of recession.

For full information and regular up-dates please read the Whatswhat.ieblog – http://www.whatswhat.ie/blog

If you have been contacted by thesecompanies and have paid them moneythere is a possibility you can get yourmoney back. Please contact Sian atWhatswhat.ie and she will be able togive you advice plus Sian welcomesany new information on this company. Her contact details can be found onwww.whatswhat.ie.

Sunday 4th October saw the last ofthe three Club Championships andthe penultimate race of the season'scalendar. The weather was very be-nign; cool and still which is perfectracing weather. There was also avery large turn-out, which is alwaysvery good to see. The route was Dol-la Hill, a distance of four and a halfmiles. John Spillane, just back fromhis holidays, took a very good thirdplace while John O'Carroll, findingsome of his best form this seasonwas second. But once again, thetrend set by the other two Champi-onship races was continued and an-other new member to the club tookthe honours. After scorching up thehill to finish 1m 09 ahead of hisnearest rival, William Murphy is the2009 Hill Climb Champion.

The racing season came to an endthis past Sunday 11th Oct with theannual contesting of the Flying Milewhich as usual was held over ameasured mile on the N52 bypass.Again, and in spite of the not-so-niceweather, a great crowd turned outand as a result, instead of handicap-ping, the riders were divided intothree groups of similar ability. How-ever the star of the show was EvaMoynan, who at ten and a half re-corded the excellent time of 3.32.

The first group was won by NeilGallagher with John Caulfield andRuth Spillane in joint second. Grouptwo went to Kevin Byrne with Dun-can Hodgins just one second behindhim and Liam Callaghan one secondadrift again. Peter Moynan broughtup the rear in that group. In groupthree, John O'Carroll stormed to thefastest time of the day 2.09 withMike O'Keeffe and John Spillaneonly seconds behind him.

The next item on the agenda is theAGM which will be held on 9th No-vember in the lounge bar of theDapp Inn and all members and in-tending members should make everyeffort to attend.

The Christmas dinner has also beenarranged for Sunday 13th Decemberin the Fairways in Kilruane at 6pm.Winter training schedules willresume very soon and details will beposted on the web site and alsoprinted here. Once again, the webaddress iswww.northtippwheelers.com.

The wedding took place recently of John Shanahan, Pallas Street, Borrisoleigh and Cath-erine McCann, Kilcormick, County Offaly. The reception was held in the County ArmsHotel, Birr. Photo: Teresa and Martin Kelly, Nenagh.

Since November 2007, some newrules apply in Ireland, re the civil sol-emnising of marriage:

For weddings in the Catholic Church, the bishops provide the RegistrarGeneral with a list of priests whomhe then deputes as wedding solem-nisers, who can validly receive theconsent of the parties, for the pur-pose of civil registration. Any visit-ing priest, therefore, invited toofficiate at a wedding in Ireland, butwhose name is not on the Register ofsolemnisers, should apply for recog-nition as a solemniser, via the localbishop.

The couple must contact the CivilRegistrar's Office to initiate the civilrecognition of their marriage at leastthree months prior to the wedding. They must personally attend at theRegistrar's Office to make a declara-tion of no impediment, before a reg-istrar.

A Marriage Registration Form(MRF) is given by the Registrar's

Office to the couple, who shouldbring/mail it to the Church in goodtime. After their Wedding, this MRFis signed by the married couple, theirwitnesses and the priest/solemniser.The couple must return this signeddocument to the Registrar's Officewithin one month of the wedding. Also, within two days prior to thewedding, the solemniser and the wit-nesses must hear the verbal declara-tion of no impediment to themarriage, made by the couple them-selves. Normally, this will be madeat the start of the wedding ceremony.

Note that the responsibility for initialapplication to the Registrar's Office, and the return to that office of thecompleted Marriage RegistrationForm is being placed on the weddingcouple themselves. The normal obli-gations to the Church for the Sacra-ment of Marriage will continue asbefore.

For couples in search of a Hawaiihoneymoon vacation, it’s the desti-nation that often comes to mind first. It’s not surprising since Hawaii issynonymous with romance. It’s whatwe think of when imagine secludedbeaches, dramatic lush mountains

and sunsets over the ocean that in-spire awe. Hawaii’s reputation asone of the world’s honeymoon capi-tals is well deserved for its Ameri-can-style warm hospitality, coupledwith exotic touches of South Pacificculture.

The joys of a Hawaii honeymoon

If you want a destination that hasplenty of “wow” appeal, Hawaii is it.Where else could you take a helicop-ter trip to see lava from an activevolcano flow, still steaming hot, intothe sea, or spend a night star gazinginto the heavens under a clear cloud-less sky? When it comes to memora-ble experiences, Hawaii is the idealplace for an unforgettable honey-moon. As a newly married couple, you can have side-by-side massagesin an ocean side cabana, or play afriendly round of golf on some of themost gorgeous courses in the world. From morning to evening, each mo-ment has the potential to turn into alasting memory. Is there any betterway to start your life together?

Good to know….

- Throughout Hawaii, a popularchoice for cooling down is locallymade ice cream in exotic flavourslike coconut pudding, kona coffee, and macadamia nut.

- The famous Hana Highway inMaui is a notoriously wild ride, stretching more than 109 kilometres, passing over 59 bridges and 620curves.

Wedding Quotes

Flowers are incorporated into thewedding ceremony as symbols of fer-tility and to ward off evil spirits. Ini-tially, bridal bouquests consistedmainly of herbs and spices.

Generally, flowers have been a majorfeature at weddings for centuries. Bytradition, the groom wears a flowerwhich appears in the bridal bouquetin his button-hole. This custom origi-nates from the Medieval tradition of aknight wearing his lady's colours as adeclaration of love. Each flower pos-sesses its own meaning and displays aspecial message. Orange Blossom, for example, denotes chastity, purityand loveliness. Some brides include aspring of live Ivy in their bouquets.Ivy is representative of eternal fideli-

ty and wedded bliss. A popular tradi-tion during Victorian times was forthe bride to plant the Ivy contained inher bouquet after the wedding andpass the resulting sprigs from thatsame plant to her daughters andgranddaughters for use in their bridalbouquets. Peonies are avoided insome cultures as they are thought torepresent shame. Azaleas are said tosymbolize temperance...Roses to rep-resent love...and Snowdrops to be asymbol of hope. In some cultures,Lilies symbolize majesty, but are cus-tomarily believed unlucky because oftheir association with death. By tradi-tion, a combination of red and whiteflowers is avoided, believing to berepresentative of blood and bandages.

Why is a wedding ring worn onthe left hand?

It is a sign of true love, the lefthand being nearest to the heart. Itis worn on the second finger as itis thought the vein from that fin-ger connects to the heart.

Why are wedding rings made ofgold? In 1217 Bishop Moore of Salis-bury in England said that a wed-ding ring should be made of gold.He said that gold, the most pre-cious of metals, would bestsymbolise the most precious ofrelationships.

The custom of decorating the caroriginates from the ancient ritual of"bedding" the newly-wed couple. This tradition used to be an impor-tant part of the wedding. After thewedding breakfast, the bride andgroom would be escorted to thebedroom and undressed. The guestsrefused to leave until the couplewere in bed together. This illustrat-ed the importance of procreation inthe marriage. The bed was decorat-ed with flowers and ribbons by thebridesmaids. This custom latertransferred to decorating the car ofthe newly-wed couple as they leftfor their honeymoon. The coloursused in such decorations have theirown specific meanings:

Red -- JusticeBlue -- ConstancyGreen -- YouthYellow -- Joy and/or honorStraw Colour - Plenty

Gold -- GaietyFlesh Colour-- Lust

Tying shoes on the bumper of a carwas symbolic of the power associ-ated with shoes in ancient times.Egyptians would also exchangesandals when goods were ex-changed so, when the bride's fathergave his daughter to the groom, hewould also give the bride's sandalsto show that she now belonged toher new husband. In Anglo-Saxontimes, the groom would tap the heelof the bride's shoe in order to dis-play his authority over her. Thebride would then throw shoes at herbridesmaids to see who would bethe next to marry. In Tudor times, itwas the custom to throw shoes atthe couple or their carriage for goodluck. Today, people normally justtie shoes or tin cans to the couple'scar.

“HARNESSING THEPOWER

OF NATURE”

Licensed Installers of In Association with

Feedback (sometimes referred to aspositive criticism) is a process inwhich the effect or output of an actionis 'returned' (fed-back) to modify thenext action. Feedback should only everbe used as a basis for improvement. Itshould not be mistaken for negativecriticism and vice verse. If feedbackdoes not provide learning or a chanceto improve, then it is beingcommunicated as negative criticism.

"Admonish your friends privately, butpraise them openly." - Publilius Syrus(35 B.C.)

So why is feedback important?

Whether you are a teacher, employer, manager, supervisor, employee, parent, friend or foe, Feedback is acrucial and important aspect ofcommunication. We gauge others’reaction by a combination of theirfacial expressions, body language, toneof voice as well as actual speech. Itallows us gain insight into whether weare communicating effectively or not.We then change our own style ofcommunication based on the feedbackwe receive.

Catherine the Great once said, "I liketo praise and reward loudly, to blamequietly." So the general rule is; Praisein public, criticise in private. There areexceptions to this rule when a grossviolation is made and needs to bepointed out immediately, or others areaware of a negative situation and itwould be beneficial to condemnwhatever behaviour was

Giving effective Feedback

Firstly, ensure you are not providingsubjective feedback based on yourown emotions

Ensure you are giving feedback on anaction and not the person themselves

Provide feedback as soon as possible

Use the “Sandwich” process if youmust provide negative feedback –sandwich it between positive feedback

Ensure you stick to facts and keepemotion out of the process

Demonstrate respect at all times, andbe prepared for possible defensiveness

Ask questions but be careful of“WHY?” questions – they couldprovoke a defensive reaction

objective

“Feedback is the breakfast ofchampions.” - Ken Blanchard

Receiving Feedback

Make sure you keep an open mind andbe objective about receiving anycriticism. Make a conscious decisionto learn from the experience.

Listen to the person providing thefeedback – allow them to explainthemselves properly

Beware of defensive emotions. Listenwith a neutral view and refrain fromjumping in with justifications

If receiving negative feedback – acceptit for what it is and learn from it toimprove future actions

Don’t dwell on feedback and allowyour ego to feel hurt by comments.Don’t let your ego hold you back, where it is “safe”

Ensure you maintain a healthyperspective and don’t get bogged downwith “what if” and “should have”

Be grateful for all constructivefeedback you receive. Someone istaking the time to provide you withlearning opportunities, thank them!

It is up to you what you do with thefeedback received, but don’t do“nothing”. This is your opportunity forimprovement, take it

Remember feedback is directed atbehaviour and not self

Feedback is part of the communicationprocess but can be honed as a skill andimproved on to provide growth anddevelopment for the receiver, if givenappropriately. In the coaching process, for example, feedback is vital for thecoach to help encourage and empowerthe client. It is just as important for aCoach to read the signs from theirclient, to gauge progression and learnabout their client.

Feedback can be provided in manyforms. If in a workplace, a simplethumbs up or a smile can provide verypositive feedback to a colleague oremployee. The words “Well Done” canspeak thousands if said with anencouraging smile. An inquisitiveeyebrow, a puzzled look can subtlyportray confusion and invite another toexplain the confusion.

So embrace feedback and be a provideras well as a receiver. Findopportunities to improve your learningexperiences and empower others.

We are back again, at the time of yearwhen most Employer and Employee’sstart to look at their Pension arrangements,if any.

Here are a number of question and dos anddon’ts that should make this process easi-er…….

Questions to ask

• Am I eligible to join an em-ployer pension plan? If not, does a person-al pension plan, a standard PRSA or anon-standard PRSA best meet my needs?

• What kind of income do I want when Iretire, over and above the state pension? How much do I need to contribute to reachmy 'pension target'?

• What fees and charges will I pay bothinitially and yearly? Will my contributionsincrease each year in line with inflation? Ifso, what charges apply?

• Which investment funds can I choosefrom? Can I switch between funds? Will Ibe charged for this?

• What is the estimated future value of mypension, assuming a set rate of fundgrowth each year?

• Are there any death-in-service or disa-bility benefits for me?

• How flexible is my plan? Can I stoppaying contributions for a time, increaseor reduce my contributions?

• Do I need to provide a pension for mydependants after I die?

• Have I any other assets I can use in re-tirement such as investment property, sav-ings or investments?

• What are the advantages and disadvan-tages of investing in an ARF over buyingan annuity?

Dos and don'ts

Dos

• Do start saving for your pension as earlyas you can. The sooner you start, the betteryour chances of building a large fund foryour retirement and the less you will haveto save each month.

• Do make sure you join your employerpension plan if you are eligible to do so.

• Do consider an employer's pension ben-efits when changing jobs.

• Do ask your employer to make a stand-ard PRSA available to you if there is noemployer pension plan in place or if youcan't join it within the first six months ofyour service.

• Do ask about making additional volun-tary contributions (AVCs) if you are in anemployer pension plan and need to boostyour pension. If you are a member of thepublic sector superannuation scheme youshould ask about purchasing notional serv-ice and also compare the benefits of AVCsand buying notional service particulary ifyou will not have 40 years service at re-

tirement age. You can get more detailsfrom Irish Civil Service Pensions Informa-tion Centre.

• Do keep up to date on how your pensionis performing. Ask for valuations if youdo not already receive them.

• Do find out how much you will pay incharges, both initial and yearly, beforebuying a pension. If you are unsure, askyour pension provider or financial advisorto explain the charges fully to you.

Don'ts

• Don't assume your fund is on track tomeet your pension needs. Review it regu-larly and increase your contributions ifyou need to and if you can afford it.

• Don't be put off by jargon. Ask ques-tions and take time to understand the is-sues so that you make the right decisionsfor your future.

• Don't feel pressurised into buying a pen-sion plan from a pension company or fi-nancial advisor just because you haveasked them for information or advice.

• Don't forget about pensions that you hadbefore, for example, a work pension thatyou had with an old employer. Contact thepensions administrator, find out the valueof your fund and see whether you cantransfer it into a new pension.

• Don't forget to check if you are eligiblefor the state pension by contacting the De-partment of Social and Family Affairs.

Keeping tabs on your pension

While buying a suitable product is the pri-ority, it is equally important to regularlyreview your pension plan to see how it isperforming and to make sure you are con-tributing enough to give you the incomeyou need at retirement, especially if youhave a defined contribution plan.

You should also check that your chargesare in line with your pension contract. Ifyou are a member of a defined contribu-tion employer pension plan, you shouldget a personal benefit statement once ayear. Members of defined benefit planscan request a similar statement from thetrustees of their fund.

If you have a PRSA, you should get:

• an annual statement of 'reasonable pro-jection', showing the pension benefits thatyou can expect to get from your PRSA atretirement

• a six-monthly report on the performanceof your PRSA fund.

You get the idea. It’s not a new idea. We’ve all been doing it forcenturies. It used be called helping your neighbours. But now weare all so busy and maybe new to an area that we don’t really knowour neighbours. Or simply our neighbours/friends aren’t skilledenough to do the job required.

Anyhow we’re willing to give it a shot. So if you want to partici-pate just email your offer to [email protected] or post to TippTatler, Curraghgraigue, Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary.

A few things to bear in mind:• Keep it short and to the point and try to be specific in what youare offering and what you would like in return.• Goods and services being swapped should be of equal value (addcash if needed) and valued at what they would cost if you were topay normal rates.• We reserve the right to refuse to publish any offer if it seems in-appropriate.• Please don’t send in wording that is just a blatant ad for yourbusiness. You can use your business name but without an essay ofyour skills, type of work you do, long list of services offered etc.etc.• It is a free service, although if we are inundated with 1000’s ofoffers we will have to charge a nominal fee. So get in early beforethat happens!• We reserve the right to make up the rules as we go along. Keep itsimple and straightforward and there should be no problems.

Who knows, maybe it will take off, maybe it won’t. Nothing ven-tured, nothing gained. We’d like to think that it would and believeit is a great opportunity for everyone.

There are a couple of websites that offer the same thing also if youwant to check them out.www.swop-o-nomics.com and www.barterireland.com and

COUNTY SENIOR AND INTERMEDIATEHURLING FINALS

The club hurling scene in Tipperary reaches itsclimax this weekend with the County Senior Hurlingfinal between Drom and Inch and Thurles Sarsfieldson Sunday October 18th at 3.30pm in SempleStadium. It will be preceded by the CountyIntermediate Hurling final between Arravale Roversand Carrick Davins at 1.30pm. We wish all 4 clubsgood luck for their big day.

Thurles Sarsfields will be seeking their 30th countysenior hurling title while Mid Division rivals Dromand Inch will be seeking their first. Sarsfields willalso be seeking to become the second club, joiningToomevara, which has won all 3 Dan Breen Cups. The original Dan Breen Cup was first presented in1931 and was replaced in 1972 and it in turn wasreplaced in 2006.

Interestingly, it has always been a team from the Middivision that has won the County Senior Hurling titlein a major anniversary year of the GAA. ThurlesSarsfields won it in 1909 and 1959, while MoycarkeyBorris won it in 1934 and 1984. The 50 year trendsuggests a Thurles win but Drom and Inch will surelyhave different ideas.

In the Intermediate Final, Carrick Davins will beseeking their first victory at this grade but of coursethey have a famous history at senior level havingwon county senior titles in 1966 and 1967. ArravaleRovers will be seeking their 2nd title havingpreviously won in 1997. Neither finalist won theirdivisional title this year but both have peaked at theright time and we can look forward to a keen contestfor the Jacksie Ryan Cup.

 HONOURING TEAMS OF THE PAST

The Borris-Ileigh teams which won the CountySenior Hurling Championships in 1981, 1983 and1986 will be honoured in Semple Stadium on Sundaybetween the Intermediate final and the Senior final. In the 1981 final Borris defeated Roscrea by 1-14 to0-12 with Noel O’Dwyer scoring 0-8 and receivingthe Man of the Match award. Timmy Stapleton wascaptain. Noel O’Dwyer was again Man of the Matchin 1983 when Francis Spillane captained the team intheir 0-17 to 1-11 victory over LoughmoreCastleiney. In 1986 they defeated defending countyand All Ireland club champions KilruaneMacDonaghs by 0-14 to 0-7 with Michael Ryancaptaining the team and Philip Kenny earning theMan of the Match award having scored 0-6. Thatteam of course went on to win the All Ireland clubchampionship on March 17th 1987 when theydefeated Rathnure of Wexford by 2-9 to 0-9 in CrokePark. Later that year, Richard Stakelum captainedTipperary to their first Munster Senior Hurlingchampionship victory in 16 years and famouslyproclaimed an end to “the famine” in his victoryspeech in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney.

We are grateful to the Tipperary Star and Younges ofthe Ragg for sponsoring this event which addsgreatly to the atmosphere of county final day. Wealso would like to thank Seamus J. King, Pat Careyand John Costigan for their efforts in organising theevent, Siobhan Mackey in the GAA office for heradministrative support and the Borris-Ileigh club fortheir assistance and co-operation.

ARRANGEMENTS AT SEMPLE STADIUM FORCOUNTY FINALS

The entry fee to the County Final is €20 for Adults,€10 for Students and OAPs, and Under 16s are free

(Valid photographic I.D. required). Both stands willbe open at 12.30pm. Groups will be accommodatedat stile 50 in Ardan Ó Riain (New Stand).

Stile 1 in the Kinnane Stand (Old Stand) and Stiles41 and 54 in New Stand are for county board passholders, 5 year term passes and voluntary stewards’passes. It is important to note that children will notbe allowed out of the Stadium during matches unlessaccompanied by an adult.

We thank our patrons in advance for their co-operation with these arrangements.

A domestic cat sleeps for up to 14hours a day.

The snow leopard protects itselffrom extreme cold when it sleeps bywrapping its 3-foot-long tail aroundits nose.

The puma and the leopard are thehighest jumping mammals. They areable to reach a height of 16.5 feet.

A cat will clean itself with paw andtongue after a dangerous experienceor when it has fought with anothercat. This is an attempt by the animalto soothe its nerves by doing some-thing natural and instinctive.

The smallest cat is the Singaporeand weighs only 4 pounds.

Cats can make over 100 vocalsounds, while dogs can only make10.

A cat uses whiskers to determine ifa space is too small to squeezethrough. The whiskers act as anten-nae, helping the animal to judge theprecise width of any passage.

The majority of cats do not have anyeyelashes.

Pound for pound, leopards are saidto be seven times stronger than hu-mans.

Panthers are known as black leop-ards, as they are the same species ofleopard. If looked at closely, blackspots can be seen on a panther.

Just like fingerprints, every catsnose pad is different.

In the 1800's cats were used to de-liver mail. In 1879, in Belgium 37cats were used to deliver mail to vil-lages, however they found that thecats were not disciplined enough todo this.

In a lifetime, the average house catspends approximately 10,950 hourspurring.

In 1888, an Egyptian peasant dis-covered an estimated three hundredthousand mummified cats in BeniHassan, Egypt. Of the cats that werenot stolen once, the find was madepublic, the remaining mummifiedcats were shipped to Great Britain tobe used as agricultural fertilizer.

A French pharmacist and chemist, employed by Louis XV, Antoine Au-gustine Parmentier, realised the nutri-tional value of the potato while beingheld prisoner by the Prussians. Hewas determined to make it the staplediet of the French but failed to con-vince the Frenchmen of its advantag-es so he tried a different tactic. Afteracquiring a miserable and unproduc-tive spot of ground, he planted 50acres of potatoes and set a guard overit.

This drew considerable attentionfrom the locals and when in theevening the guard was relaxed, thelocals who believed the crop to bevaluable,"acquired" some of the potatoes fromthe plot and soon were growing theroot in their own gardens. The newand valuable potato gradually beganto be accepted by the people ofFrance.

Spanish singer Julio Iglesias was ontelevision with British TV host AnneDiamond when he used the word'manyana'. Diamond asked him toexplain what it meant. He said that the termmeans "maybe the job will be donetomorrow, maybe the next day, may-be the day after that. Perhaps next

week, next month, next year. Whocares?" The host turned to Irish-man Shay Brennan who was also onthe show and asked him if there wasan equivalent term in Irish."No. In Ireland we don't have a wordto describe that degree of urgency,"replied Brennan.

This list is also valuable for those whohave emotional abusive tendencies, and might enable him or her to beginto be aware that he or she is anemotional abuser.

There is also a type of emotional abusecalled malevolent abuse, which occurswhen a person tries to undermineanother to the extent of sabotagingtheir success, health, or happiness. Here is a check list to see if one isguilty of malevolent abuse, or thetendency to be so:

Do you often secretly hope that badthings will happen to your partner, e.g.that his/her endeavour will fail?

Do you get a deep sense of satisfac-tion when bad things happen to yourpartner?

Do you sometimes cause bad thingsto happen to your partner, such as sab-otaging their friendships by telling liesabout them?

Do you deliberately undermine orsabotage your partner’s efforts to gainsuccess?

Do you deliberately cause your part-ner to doubt himself/herself or to ques-tion their perceptions?

Victims who suffer emotional abuseshould try to remember that they arenot alone, that it is not their fault, andfind somebody that they can trust tolisten to them in a non-judgementalway. It is important to listen to theseindividuals, to believe them, and tosupport them, and to give them advice.

While I maintain that the rate ofhealing abusers is low, there aremeasures a victim may take toempower themselves, if they decide toremain in the abusive relationship. There is an eight step programme thatcan be followed, and it is relevant toall types of abuse:

1. Admit to yourself that you are be-ing abused, and acknowledge the dam-age you have suffered. To enable thisto happen you must understand abuse

as outlined in these articles. Keep anabuse journal noting incidents of emo-tional abuse, and if possible share itwith a counsellor.

2. Understand why you choose anabusive partner. This will certainly in-volve exploring your childhood, andmore than likely discovering that youwere conditioned to feel ‘not goodenough’ and to take what you couldget in terms of a partner. If you regard-ed abuse as normal in your childhoodyou may choose a partner on that ba-sis. Such a partner feels ‘right’ for you.It is a question of low self-esteem.Make a list of why you choose yourpartner.

3. Understand why you have put upwith the abuse. This is a difficult step, because it is humiliating to admit thatyou have allowed yourself to be de-graded and treated so poorly. But youchoose to allow the abuse to happen. This again goes back to childhoodwhen the actions of the current abusermirror what may have happened to youwhen you were a child. This meansthat you have lost your judgement andperspective, and there is every chancethat you blame yourself for the abuse. This blame is often carried from child-hood, because children almost alwaysblame themselves for the abuse theyreceive. Guilt is a major feeling ofabused victims. Make a list of why youstay in an abusive relationship. Thislist will help you to erase the guilt youmay be feeling.
