Many members of the Tipp City community might recognize this man! Rob Fox, a greeter at Meijer, spoke with Broadway Elementary 2nd graders as part of the school’s “Kindness Counts” program. The year-long initiative promotes kindness and fosters a greater awareness of differences. Last week’s lesson was to understand how it may look and feel for a person with cerebral palsy. Rob told the attentive students that he doesn’t let his CP limit his zest for life. He encouraged the children to be kind, thoughtful, and understanding to all people.

Animals Alive Nevin Coppock first graders touched a salamander, cockroach, snake, and tortoise. The animals are residents at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery and travel to schools so students can learn about animals and their natural habitats. The in-school experience also allows children to observe the animals while comparing their characteristics and behaviors. It is no easy feat to gather 200 fifth graders, position them in even rows, have them face forward, and make sure most are smiling. Yet, it happened at LT Ball Intermediate for the annual all-class photograph.

The weather was perfect for a day at Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm, home to horses, pigs, chickens, goats and sheep. Nevin Coppock’s kindergarten students visited the farm animals and a century-old barn. The adventure also allowed children the opportunity to explore croplands and dig in the vegetable/herb garden.

Some Tippecanoe Middle School students are raising awareness about local air quality by raising a colored flag to indicate air pollution levels. The team, enrolled in Design Thinking II, selected the student challenge from the Bring Your Green website. Each school day, the students check the air quality online and hoist a flag to correspond. Green indicates good; yellow is moderate; orange shows the air is hazardous for sensitive people; red indicates the worst air quality and is hazardous for everyone.
