As a wise person once wrote, When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying! My dad passed away in 2004...and I was crying. Deep inside, however, I was ‘smiling’ and glad for him...no more pain, confusion or suffering. It was a wonderful life, played out over 98 years... from Kitty Hawk and the Wright Brothers to space exploration, computers and cellular technology. More important than what he saw or experienced or how long he lived was the reality that he was a terrific father and wonderful role-model. It’s an understatement to say that he’s missed! Whether we live to be a ripe old age or die much younger, you’re probably familiar with the following: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take...but by the moments that take our breath away!” Isn’t that the truth?! I hope that for each of us, there are still many moments that take our breath away. How do we stay ‘young’ and keep from getting bogged down with this aging process? How about starting a New Year with the following: • Throw out non-essential numbers (such as age and weight)! • Keep only cheerful friends... the grouches pull you down. • Keep learning...learn about computers, crafts, gardening, whatever! • Enjoy the simple things. • Laugh often, long and loud... laugh until you gasp for breath! • Tears happen...endure, grieve and move on. Be ALIVE while you are alive! • Surround yourself with what you love: family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, etc. • Cherish your health. • Don’t take guilt trips...take lots of trips but not a guilt trip. • Tell the people you love that you love them...at every opportunity! This advice is not original to me but don’t you agree that it’s spot-on?! Be safe, and if we can assist you in any way, please let us know.

Whole Brain Fitness: "Nomatter where we are in life, wealways want to have the chance tolearn, grow and contribute.Achieving those goals starts andends with brain health. WhenBelmont Village started almost 20years ago, we didn’t conceive ofever having 30 residents aged100+ under our roofs at the sametime. But that’s what’s happened, more than once. We’re all livinglonger, so how we live at every stagematters more. Over the years, we’vedeveloped a Whole Brain FitnessLifestyle for our residents toencourage successful aging. Itmeans nurturing and engagingmind, body and spirit each day, inspecific ways. We focus on sevenessential elements that include theright nutrition and physicalexercise, mental workouts andlifelong learning, reduced stress, astrong social network and a senseof purpose. Each element of thelifestyle is important and supportsthe others, but what makes itunique is our emphasis on mentalfitness in all of our programs forevery phase.” (website) Look fornew activities, every monththis year.

JANUARY

From the Desk of EmilyDawson, DRCS, R.N.

Thyroid Disease: January isNational Thyroid AwarenessMonth. “The thyroid is a small butpowerful gland in your neck. Itproduces hormones that controlyour metabolism, or the way yourbody uses energy. It alsoinfluences your heart rate, bodytemperature, bones, digestion andreproductive system. When thethyroid hormones get out ofbalance, it can have profoundeffects on your health” (*1). Ifundetected it could cause, highcholesterol, heart disease andinfertility. There are three types ofthyroid conditions: 1)Hypothyroidism, an underactivethyroid, doesn’t make enoughthyroid hormone. Somesymptoms are fatigue, weightgain, low tolerance of cold, dryskin, forgetfulness. 2)

Hyperthyroidism, an overactivethyroid, makes too much thyroidhormone. Some symptoms arenervousness, sweating, tremblinghands, irregular heartbeats, insomnia, muscle weakness. 3)Thyroid nodules, often cause nosymptoms, but may cause lumpsin the neck. From thesenodules/lumps one mayexperience pain, swollen lymphnodes under the jaw, hoarseness, trouble swallowing. Fewer thanone in 10 nodules are cancerous, but any nodule should be checkedby your physician. “If you haveany symptoms of a thyroiddisorder, see your doctor. Thyroiddisorders can be treatedsuccessfully, usually withmedication or surgery” (*2).Please stop by your WellnessCenter to discuss with the nursesif you need any assistance settingup an appointment with yourdoctor (*1,*2).
