Before Thanksgiving, our school (led by National Elementary Honor Society or NEHS) collected items for our servicemen and women overseas. Hundreds of items such as soap, shampoo, snacks, toothbrushes, and many more items of need were sent to our men and women serving. Also, this past week we (led by NEHS) have collected thousands of food items for the Crown Point Food Pantry to support local families in need. In addition to these efforts, we have had an outpouring of generosity and support for our “Bulldog Tree” this season. Thank you so much to so many of you who have contributed and helped teach our students the value and importance of helping others and giving to others when possible. Please note the calendar change to make up for our school cancellation last Friday, December 1st. School will be in session on January 15, 2018 as a make up day. Have a wonderful week. Lunch Time Information from Our Cafeteria

Lunch Time Visitors Each student is allowed to have one guest per month. Restaurant/fast food & sodas or glass containers are not allowed. Parents may purchase lunch in the cafeteria, cost is $3.25. This cannot come off the student’s lunch card. A quick reminder to all parents visiting for lunch in the ca-fé: Please do not treat other students to food items during your time in the café. Without proper parent permission, allergy knowledge, and other sensitivities to food choices, it is best to treat only your student. We love having you in to share a great lunch at Tball…..we just ask that you do it safely! We will start taking reservations for lunch guests in the month of October.

Lunch Time Money Please go online www.mymealtime.com to deposit lunch money or you can send a check in a labeled envelope with student first & last name. Mealtime online passcode is the student ID. Parents can find this number on the Parent RDS website, next to the student’s name on the sched-ule. Parents will use this number to set up the account. All students will receive a hot lunch regardless if the account is negative. No charging of any extras will be allowed. Please Note: All lunch money needs to be brought down in the morning before school, if not it will be deposited the next day.

Did you bring your lunch, but need a drink? Milk may be purchased, if you brought in a lunch from home. It cannot be charged on student lunch card if they have a negative balance. Milk cost is $0.40.

Heating up Lunches Our cafeteria does not warm up food, cook food or wash dishes brought from home. If we tamper with the food it becomes the liability of the cafe-teria. Please, if you are sending in hot food make sure it is in a thermos.

Would you like to Substitute in the Cafeteria? If you would like to be a sub in food services please call Pam Maloney at 662-6480. This is a great way to earn a little extra cash and be home with your children in the morning & afternoon.

School Breakfast FAST FACT Students who eat breakfast have better attention and memory. School breakfast is healthy, & convenient. Students who participate in school breakfast show improved attendance, behavior, standardized test scores as well as decreased tardiness. Students who eat school breakfast at-tend, on average, 1.5 more days of school per year and score 17.5% high-er on standardized math tests.

Birthday Celebrations Birthday treats are always fun for your child to share with classmates. You may choose to purchase birthday tickets for your child’s class which will allow your child’s classmates to select a special treat from our “Birthday Choices” at lunch! Treats will be given out in our cafeteria. Call your cafe-teria manager, Mrs. “G” Sheppard to preorder & set your party up.

There are cafeteria openings at several schools throughout the Corporation. If you are interested in a cafeteria position, please contact Pam Maloney at 662-6480.

A Message from the Nurse Attention 3rd Grade Parents: All 3rd grade students were screened for vision. New students were screened for both vision and hearing. A letter was sent home with your child if they need further evaluation from a doctor.

All medication must be in its original container. All prescription medication must have the correct information on the label. Also, no cough drops, or essential oils are allowed at school unless accompanied by doctor & parent notes. No child should be bringing medication to school in order to self medicate.

From the Art Room: I’ve uploaded lots of new items into second and third grade’s

digital portfolio on Artsonia. I have a stack of first grade texture

monsters to upload next. It’s exciting to see that Timothy Ball

has 50% participation in Artsonia, which is our highest percent-

age ever! Thanks for your support in letting your kids interact

with and show off their artwork. If you ever have any questions

about the online gallery or Classroom Mode, you can contact

me at (219)662-0047, extension 21203 or

[email protected]. Thanks!

Monday Morning Stomp Out Bullying Tip

Joking/Kidding versus Taunting—Joking/Kidding is a

way to tease each other in a kind way. If it bothers someone they stop. Taunting is calling someone names with the intent to hurt.

A Message from our Home School Facilitator Mrs. Holok The concept of “GRIT” was popularized by University of Penn-

sylvania psychologist Angela Duckworth. Grit is defined as

having perseverance and passion for long term goals and

working through challenges, despite failure and adversity. Grit

is a non-cognitive skill, similar to curiosity, resilience, and self-

control. Researchers have come to realize that grit has an

impact on students’ long-term success just as much, if not

more, than academic skills or IQ. So what does this mean?

When the math gets too difficult or the reading gets boring,

grit is what keeps students from giving up! Can we teach our

children to have grit? YES we can! More to come in next

week’s newsletter… Congratulations to those students who received PAWS this week:

Sick Day Guidelines:

Making the Right Call

When Your Child Is Sick:

Should I keep my child home or send him or her to school? School policy (and/or state law) requires a child to stay home if he or she:

Has a fever of 100.0° or higher Has been vomiting or has diarrhea Has symptoms that keep your child from participating in school, such as:

Very tired or lack of appetite Cough that he or she cannot control, sneezing often Headache, body aches, or earache Sore Throat – a little sore throat is ok for school, but a bad sore throat could be

strep throat, even if there is no fever. Other signs of strep throat, in children are a headache and upset stomach, or rash. Call your doctor if your child has these signs. A special test is needed to know if it is strep throat.

Keep your child home if he or she is coughing or sneezing often because this spread the sickness to others.

24 Hour Rule

FEVER: Keep your child home until his or her FEVER has been gone WITHOUT medi-cine for 24 hours. Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours. Returning to school too soon may slow recovery and make others sick.

VOMITING OR DIARRHEA: Keep your child home for 24 hours after the LAST time he or she vomited or had diarrhea.

ANTIBIOTICS: Keep your child home until 24 hours after the FIRST dose of antibiot-ics for anything like ear infection or strep throat.

We often have many children and adults with colds coming to school, and each one is passing their sickness to others. Please help others from becoming sick by keep-ing your child home during their illness.
