World’s largest selling English Daily
Introduction The Times Of India also popularly known as TOI
Founded on November 3, 1838 as The Bombay Times, a bi-weekly , during the British Raj.
Its editor was J.E. Brennan, a retired Irish doctor who was also secretary of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce.
Later Bombay Times became daily in 1850

The Bombay times had many Indian Shareholders from 1850 to 1859
In 1861, the four newspaper –the Bombay Times, the Bombay Courier, The Standard and the Bombay Telegraph- were amalgamated under new name of the “Times of India ”.
In 1892, Thomas J. Bennet purchased the rights of Bombay times, he had taken help of master printer F. M. Coleman.
Later, in 1913, they jointly formed the Company Bennet , Coleman & Co.Ltd ( BCCL).

With its high class printing and news service, the Times of India made rapid progress.
In 1890 it printed daily 3000 copies.
Being a Anglo-Indian newspaper, there was freedom from race prejudice, certainly on editorial side.
The Times of India if the oldest English daily in India and it is also a great newspaper which played an important role in the development of journalism in this country.

Frank Moraes became the first Indian editor when freedom came.
The Times of India passed into Indian hands in 1946.
Ownership of the paper passed on to the then famous industrial family of Dalmias. ( Ramkrishna Dalmia)
Later it was taken over by Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain of the Sahu Jain group from Bijnore, UP.
