Create more space at home

Upgrading the deckfor your homeArticle Resource Association

When it comes to home improvements, deck sys-tems top the list with an estimated 4 million newdecks built annually in the United States and 40 mil-lion remodeled decks gracing today’s homes. This ris-ing trend has led manufacturers to offer a wider vari-ety of deck materials, styles and options, but choicescan be overwhelming. While wood has traditionallywon the popularity contest for decks due to its naturalappearance, vinyl is becoming a choice material foroutdoor home entertaining due to its combination ofcarefree maintenance, aesthetics and value. Vinyl isn’tjust for windows and siding anymore.

Why are more people “decking out” their homeswith vinyl? One big reason is time. Working familiesvalue leisure time more than ever because they haveless time to maintain their outdoor environments.Vinyl decks are virtually maintenance-free, requiringonly a yearly power-wash to maintain, whereas woodfades and deteriorates with costly regular stain andsealant applications. Unlike wood or composite, vinylis color-fast and non-porous, so dirt and stains don’tcollect to compromise appearance. Vinyl decks retaintheir original fresh appearance for many decades.

“Consumers are also choosing vinyl to save money. While vinyl has a higher up-front cost than wood, itlasts longer and delivers a total return on investmentin just five to seven years versus wood, which deliversno payback due to its prohibitive maintenance costs,”says Deron Manwaring, national sales and marketingmanager, Royal Outdoor Products. Busy consumerswho want to enhance their home’s value feel vinyl iswell worth the investment.”

When shopping for the right deck supplier, keepseveral things in mind. Not all vinyl deck systems arethe same. Find a supplier with a complete vinyl pack-age that includes not only basic deck materials, butcompatible vinyl rails, posts and trim to create an inte-grated look that adds curb appeal to your home exteri-o r.

One company offering trend-setting vinyl deck so-lutions since 1988 is Royal Outdoor Products, whichhelps homeowners create stunning outdoor entertain-ing spaces. With Royal Outdoor Products’ customiz-able vinyl Deck Lok system, all deck, rail, post andtrim components interlock using a tongue-and-groovesystem for easy installation, seamless beauty and ver-s a t i l i t y.

Bulky space-consuming furni-ture is on its way out. Beautifulspace-saving wood cabinetry is in,taking its rightful place through-out the home, from formal diningrooms to mud rooms. In fact, cabi-netry is fast becoming the newfurniture of choice. From floor-to-ceiling wall spaces to nooks andcrannies, cabinetry can fit justabout anywhere, such as bath-rooms, foyers and hallways, andkids’ smaller bedrooms.

“With busier lifestyles, growingfamilies, gourmet kitchens, homeoffices and diverse hobbies, con-sumers are purchasing more itemsthan ever before. As a result, peo-ple are discovering more creativeuses for cabinetry, such as lockersin mudrooms where kids can storetheir valuables after school, sportsand other activities,” says MindyBrooks, advertising and communi-cations manager at HomeCrestCabinetr y.

Another popular trend is replac-ing old dressers and other un-wieldy bedroom furniture withstandard and custom cabinets thatline walls or fit snugly into clos-ets. Especially in smaller homes,

wood wall-hugging credenza toshowcase everything from yourfamily heirlooms and framed pho-tos to knick-knacks using shelvesand glass-door display cabinets, while organizing a multitude ofitems that would otherwise beclutter, inside credenza drawersand closed cabinet spaces.

When using cabinetry insteadof furniture, the design and stor-age possibilities are as rich as yourimagination. To create a cozycountry look and feel, you canchoose closed cabinets and openbookshelves surrounding a manteland fireplace in a den or livingroom. A window seat with built-instorage and marble-topped cabi-netry on both sides creates a com-fortable nook for reading and re-laxing anyplace in the homewhere there’s a window with aview. You can even divide roomsusing a beautiful wooden chinahutch that combines closed solid-wood storage cabinets stretchingfloor-to-ceiling at one end with el-egant glass-door china displaycabinets lowered to kitchen is-land-height at the other end, achieving an airy, open feel be-tween rooms that doesn’t blocklight or conversation.

closed-door cabinetry or openbookshelves placed strategically asroom dividers between living anddining areas, and all along walls, can generate new space by in-creasing storage options.

Not only does cabinetry utilizespace better than furniturethroughout the home, it helps youget organized and stay that way. With cabinetry, everything has itsown home so there’s less clutterand chaos in your life. For exam-ple, you can create a beautiful

Red can add burst of styleBy Melissa RayworthThe Associated Press

It’s the color of pas-sionate romance andthundering rage, the hueof choice for everythingfrom sleek sports cars andold-school power ties toknockout nail polish.Sexy or sweet, rugged orregal, red always gets no-ticed. And, according tointerior designers, it’s asecret weapon if you wantto add a burst of style andenergy to your homewithout major expense ore ff o rt .

“Red is one of thosestatement colors,” saysdesigner Janine Carendi.Even in small doses, “it issomething that can reallyignite a room.”

It’s also a mood-lifter.“Going into spring, it’s alively, happy color,” saysdesigner Mallory Mathi-son. “But it’s not pastel,so it’s unexpected. It hasthat ‘wow’ f a c t o r. ”

In this season of bar-gain hunting, here’s yourguide to seeing red – andusing it affordably – tobring a fresh look and en-ergy to your home.

Your go-to ColorDesigner Brian Patrick

Flynn calls it “the boldneutral.” There are shadesof red to match any colorsalready in your home.Browns, blues, pinks, or-anges, grays, black andwhite – “red even looksreally good with limeg re e n , ” he says. “And de-pending on what you pairit with, it becomes moremasculine or feminine.”

Red can be traditional(warm, deep reds likecranberry and cinnamon)or modern (brighter, lighter shades like truered or cherry), and itworks as well with homeyFrench country interiorsas it does with elegant,Asian-inspired ones.

It’s also a quick-fix col-or. It can brighten a roomthat gets little sunlight orgive a facelift to a roomthat feels dated. “So manypeople have been doingblue and brown for such a

long time,” says Mathi-son. “Weed out the blueand add in red.”

Second LifeIf you have an old piece

of furniture or accessorythat’s functional butworn, paint it red. A bold, red lacquer finish“breathes new life intojust about any piece andinstantly makes it the starof the room,” Flynn says.

For small pieces, likechairs, lamps or vases, regular cans of spraypaint should work. Forlarge pieces, considerrenting a sprayer (thetechnical name is HVLP,or high-volume low-pres-sure sprayer) from ahome improvement store. The cost is minimal, Fly-nn says, and the unitscome with instructions(the store may also offertips on using it).

Small Doses“You probably wouldn’t

wear an entire red outfit, but you can have red nailsand pretty red lipstick ora handbag. So think that

way in your home,” saysMathison.

Search your home foritems to group together, like books with red cov-ers, red picture framesand pieces of art that in-clude the color red.

Carendi often uses redas a “conceptual anchor,”threading red piecesthrough the rooms of ahome “so that each room, however different theymight be, they have a redelement.”

Consider unexpectedlocations: Use a rich, redpaint on a ceiling or inthe interior sections of abookcase. Carendi evensuggests painting the in-side of your closets abright, cheerful red. (“Itdoesn’t cost any more,”she points out, “to get redpaint versus white.”)

Flynn loves to energizea room with a red “con -versation piece,” like ahuge vase painted red.“It’s about the shape andthe color and scale. Thatmakes it a conversationpiece versus an accessory.”

It’s the color of passionate romance and thundering rage, thehue of choice for everything from sleek sports cars andold-school power ties to knockout nail polish. Sexy or sweet, rugged or regal, red always gets noticed. (AP/Sarah Dorio)

Hardworking kitchens canfeature stylish upgrades

Years ago, the kitchen served an utilitarian function – aplace to prepare food and clean the dishes. Today, it’s tru-ly the nerve center of the house where families eat meals, discuss the day’s happenings, plan calendars, check e-mailand entertain.

As a result, more homeowners than ever seek ways tomake their kitchens work harder so they can re-focustheir energy away from cooking and cleaning, and put itmore on their family and friends who have gathered.

High-tech faucets and appliances, expanded work sur-faces and carefully thought-through floor plans are just afew elements that have emerged in kitchen trends. Butone of the most noticeable differences in today’s kitchenis the demand for multiple sinks and various watersources.

According to Jeff Pratt, of Danze, a manufacturer ofdecorative plumbing products, many homeowners are us-ing multiple sink areas to increase efficiency. However, they don’t want to sacrifice the ability to showcase theirpersonal tastes and eye for design.

According to Pratt, the countertops you surround thesink with and the faucets you place on them, can addmuch of the design a homeowner seeks.

If you’re looking for ideas on how to make your kitchenmore functional and stylish, consider integrating these op-tions into your kitchen remodeling plan.

Main SinkAn all-purpose station primarily used for clean-up duty,

the main sink often features a deeper, single basin to han-dle dishes and oversized pots and pans. Pratt suggestspairing these sinks with a high-rise pre-rinse faucet orpull-down faucet. These faucets improve functionality ofthe sink area by allowing users to literally “take the waterto the work,” but are noticeably fashionable.

Second SinkOften located in a center island, this sink helps avoid

congestion at the main sink and is a great way to increasea kitchen’s workflow. Many refer to this sink as a prepsink, which quite literally is one of its primary uses.Homeowners commonly use this extra workspace forcutting vegetables, chilling wine or washing hands beforea meal.

Bar SinkAlso referred to as a convenience sink or a beverage

center, this area is traditionally used for entertaining pur-poses. It’s occasionally located on the center island, but isoften placed on a separate countertop in the kitchen oradjacent room. Make sure to choose a faucet that match-es the other kitchen faucets.

Looking for another water source without a full sink?Try incorporating a pot filler faucet at your stovetop. These faucets provide a convenient, safe way to addmore water to boiling pots or saute pans.

Add roses to your gardenArticle Resource Association

Stroll your neighborhood and chances are you’llspot landscape shrub roses decorating someone’sgarden or backyard. Take a drive into town, andyou’ll see them planted at your favorite shoppingcenter. If you haven’t noticed, landscape shrub roseshave taken the country by storm. In home gardens, containers and along highways, these low-mainte-nance roses bloom continuously from spring untilfrost with little to no effort.

“Anybody can grow these hard-working roses, nomatter where they live. If you can grow grass, youcan grow landscape shrub roses,” says James A.Baggett, editor of Country Gardens Magazine.

Here are some tips on using landscape shrub rosesin the garden and throughout the landscape.

Problem Solvers in Your LandscapeWhether you live in a city or the ’burbs, have a

small garden plot or large acreage, the gardening anddecorating possibilities with shrub roses are endless.Plant them individually among other shrubs, annu-als and perennials, in mixed beds and borders.

Pot up a ContainerGarden designer Jon Carloftis prefers to plant

shrub roses in containers. “I like to give them per-fect planting conditions such as good drainage, richsoil and the addition of regular fertilizer that won’tbe an overdose to neighboring plants,” he says.

Close to HomeNothing says simple elegance like the original

Knock Out rose. Try planting them “en masse”against your front porch or home. The large clustersof cherry-red blooms say welcome with a generousbloom cycle of every five to six weeks. Against yourhouse, porch or deck, the rich, eye-popping red col-or is a sure winner.

Second Look Curbside AppealLooking for plants with great curbside appeal that

add year-round beauty? Cluster shrub roses arounda mailbox or blend with perennials to create visualcurb appeal. Plant the award-winning RainbowKnock Out along with perennials. This coral pinkrose complements any color scheme and the bloomsalmost look hand-painted with rich yellow at thebase.

Now You See it – Now You Don’tDo you have an unsightly utility unit, shed, trash

can, or pool pump you want to hide? How about aslope or a hazardous spot to fill? Group hardy andattractive roses for a showy “c o v e r- u p . ” Try plantingPink Double Knock Out with double flowers in acheerful bubble gum hue. Unfazed by heat, thishardy shrub rose will cover up those unsightly spotswith a pink profusion of color.

Borders and MoreWant to create a natural privacy fence in your
