• Outstanding leadership and conquests by leaders like Julius Caesar, Octavian (aka Augustus) and Trajan greatly expanded the Roman Empire
• Also in 212, all free men were made citizens. This was an attempt to increase Rome’s taxbase.

• The Visigoths settled in the Empire around 375 AD• Very poorly treated, many revolts• When Roman subjects were unwilling to serve in
the army, the Empire replaced them with Visigoths
• In 395 AD, the Roman emperor died, and the empire was shared by his two sons. The Visigoths took advantage and destroyed Western Rome. Eastern Rome survived.
