Earliest Photos• The Camera Obscura was a common sketching

device by the mid-1500s, and was used as early as 1100

• Daquerreotype Pictures- 1839– Used a sheet of silver plated copper bathed in iodine to

expose the photos.– Daguerre’s process gained popularity quickly. With over 70

studios in NY city by 1850.

Negatives• Calotype process invented by Henry Talbot in 1841

– Used paper treated in silver salt solution.

• Dry plate negatives were invented in 1879– Portable dark rooms were no longer needed.– Handheld cameras could now be created.

Kodak

• Eastman invented the Kodak camera in 1888.– Considered the first commercial camera– Took 100 photos, then it was sent back to the factory to

develop.– Used rolled film.

• In 1935, the one of the first successful color films was created, Kodachrome.– Other commercially viable color films followed.

Polaroid

• The polaroid camera was created in 1948• It was capable of developing a picture within minutes of being taken.

Digital Cameras• The first digital still camera was created by Canon

in 1984.
