By Mark Miller, Boys Basketball Editor, WisSports.net

The state of Wisconsin has turned out some pretty impressive big men over the years.

Don Kojis of Milwaukee Notre Dame in the 1950s, Jim Chones of Racine St. Catherine’s in the 1960s, Kurt Nimphius of South Milwaukee in the 1970s, Joe Wolf of Kohler in the 1980s, Jim McIlvaine of St. Catherine’s in the 1990s and Brian Butch of Appleton West in the 2000s are among the top frontline players in state prep basketball history.

And now two additional names can be added to the list of stellar big men who have played high school basketball in the state.

Henry Ellenson of Rice Lake and Diamond Stone of Dominican are dominant 6-foot-10 players who share this year’s Mr. Basketball award, which is presented annually by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

The accolades for Ellenson and Stone are truly remarkable.

Both played on the Gold-medal winning Team USA U17 squad last summer and both were selected to participate in the McDonald’s All-American game next month in Chicago.

Both are also ranked among the top 10

players nationally in the class of 2015 by ESPN with Ellenson at No. 5 and Stone at No. 7. Both are four-year starters for their schools and both received recruiting attention from programs from across the country.

Ellenson, who signed a national letter of intent to play college basketball at Marquette last November, is averaging 27.4 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.4 blocked shots per game. He helped Rice Lake to victories in 47 of 48 games within the Big Rivers Conference the past four seasons and also led the Warriors to WIAA State Tournament appearances as a junior and senior.

An extremely versatile player who can handle the ball, pass and shoot, Ellenson is effective both from the perimeter and in the post.

The son of former Menomonie all-state pick John Ellenson and younger brother of Marquette junior Wally Ellenson and Valley City State sophomore Elwood Ellenson, Henry Ellenson is considered the most dominant big man in the history of high school basketball in northern Wisconsin.

Stone has led Dominican to four straight D4 state titles and joined Randolph’s Ryan Tillema as the only players to start on four consecutive state championship teams.

He is averaging 24.4 points and 11.4 rebounds per game while shooting 67 percent from the floor. He also averages 2.8 blocked shots per game for the Knights.

Stone trimmed his list of potential colleges to Wisconsin, Maryland, Connecticut and Oklahoma State last fall and plans to announce where he’ll play college basketball following the state tournament.

A Maryland commit, Stone is the son of former UW-Whitewater standout Bob Stone, Diamond Stone can absolutely dominant in the lane with his scoring and rebounding, but he can also step outside and make the mid-range jump shot.

Having two players of such high stature made is extremely difficult to pick one of the other as both Ellenson and Stone have achieved so much during their high school careers.

The WBCA also named co-Mr. Basketball winners in 2007 when Scott Christopherson of Aquinas and Keaton Nankivil of Madison Memorial shared the award.

By Norbert Durst, Girls Basketball Editor, WisSports.net

Arike Ogunbowale of Divine Savior Holy Angles has been named Miss Basketball by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association. The award honors the top senior girls basketball player and has been given out since 1982.

“Super excited and honored to receive the award,” said Ogunbowale.

Ogunbowale has had a remarkable four-year career capped off with a Division 1 State title. Leading DSHA to the state tournament for the first time since 2006 she made a splash in the semi-finals against Middleton, putting up a state tournament record 55 points.

On the season the 5-foot-9 wing has averaged better than 27 points, 9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.5 steals per game for coach Jeff Worzella and the Dashers.

She has been a dominant offensive force since her freshman year and will leave DSHA with her name all over the record book, including as the school’s all-time leading scorer. Arike has 2,213 points, 7th in state history, entering the Dashers Division 1 State Championship Game against D.C. Everest.

She was selected as a McDonald’s All-American, named WBCA All-State all four years, and is a four-time Greater Metro Player of the Year.

Arike had offers from every major conference before committing to Notre Dame. She also participated and won gold medals playing for Team USA in the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championships, FIBA 2013 Americas U16 Championships and the FIBA 2013 3x3 U18 World Championships.

Ogunbowale is a strong and athletic wing that is a headache for her opponents with her variety of ways to score. She can

hit the three, take you off the dribble to the hoop, and stop on a dime and knock down a jumper.

“We found out on Thursday that she was going to be receiving the award and she had a huge smile on her face when she heard the news,” DSHA coach Jeff Worzella.

“Well deserved. She’s a tremendous player that can do it all,” he added.

Coach Worzella also mentioned how there are dozens of people waiting after games to get autographs and pictures and she’s always willing to take the time to interact with the fans.

By Deb Hauser, Associate Director WIAA

At the recent WIAA Annual Meeting the association passed a new unlimited contact rule. Below is a Q & A around the issue.

Q: Can the basketball coach provide unlimited nonschool coaching contact during an open gym?

A: No. Open gyms are SCHOOL run recreational opportunities for any and all students in the school’s population to recreate. The coach or anyone else may NOT provide instruction. Nothing has changed in open gyms.

Q: What are common nonschool organizations?

A: American Legion, local recreation department, booster club, golf club, local Lions Club. A key question would be does the organization have liability insurance. If the nonschool organization invited the coach, the coach could provide unlimited nonschool instruction.

Q: Can coaches coach the summer league teams?

A: If the summer league team is sponsored and organized by a nonschool organization (booster club, Lions Club, etc.), the coach could work (coach) for that nonschool organization.

Q: Can they take their team to an AAU tournament?

A: Provided the above stipulations are met, coaches may coach an AAU team.

Q: Can coaches use money from the school or activity account to pay entry fees?

A: No funds from the schools fund 10 or Fund 60 accounts may be used. Programs run via the community education department or recreation department are allowed.

Q: Can a parent rent the gym, open it to basketball players and provide instruction? Can the coach provide instruction?

A: Yes, but not the best practice. The parent would be considered nonschool (no school funds) as long as the parent followed district (and/or school) policy to rent the gym.

Q: Can coaches make either unrestricted or unlimited coaching contact mandatory?

A: No. Coaches may not mandate athletes participate in nonschool competition, or determine who may or

may not participate in nonschool activity. It must be open to any and all interested students. It must be voluntary.

Q: Can coaches determine nonschool rosters?

A: The unlimited non-school coaching contact is open to any and all interested students. Rosters could be determined by try-outs and not previous team status.

Q: Can coaches provide transportation to nonschool competition?

A: Only if the coach and event is directly related to the nonschool program. This includes school.

Q: Can the nonschool organization provide camps for athletes and have the coach work the camp?

A: Yes. But the nonschool organization may not provide monies for camps run by other organizations (UW camps, etc.). Athletes must pay 100% of costs associated with camps/clinics.

Q: If the local basketball association (our youth association) signs up for gym time at our schools for the purpose of providing instruction to any girls interested and the basketball coach is providing that instruction, could a high school athlete show up for that instruction. Is that considered non-school contact?

A: Yes provided the camp is run during the summer.

Q: If a group of local high school girls decides to play in a league or tournament at another area high school this summer could I coach them if the school provides nothing (transportation, league fees, etc.)?

A: Yes. Provided the team is a nonschool team and try-outs are open to any and all students.

Q: If our basketball team is in a summer league and the youth booster club paid their entry and no school transportation is used for these nights, may our coach work with these kids in the summer?

A: Yes.

Q: If we ran all our open gyms and summer leagues under the umbrella of the community youth organization (as I am sure many people will do), how can our coach be involved?

A: Don’t match open gyms (a school sponsored activity) with any other nonschool format or nonschool organization. Keep them separate to avoid confusion. Schools don’t run

summer leagues and may not be involved. A youth organization may rent the gym to provide an instructional. A nonschool group may organize a team and ask your coach to coach. Have the youth organization call it something else. They can call it a camp, a practice, instructional time, or a clinic. But avoid calling it an open gym. Using the same name will only add confusion. Coaches organizing and disguising the activity as nonschool is circumvention. It is best to have the nonschool organization initiate and actually develop the programs and teams.

Q: Basketball and volleyball coaches can coach their athletes’ summer league teams as long as they are open to everyone in the school, no school funds are used, and no transportation by the school is used.

A: Correct. But I would add: Keep in mind that coaches do not organize nonschool teams. The students or nonschool group can organize the teams either the nonschool group or the athletes could ask the coach to work with them.

Other Amendments

These items were also passed and will go into effect when the May WIAA BULLETIN is published.

Coaches QualificationsBeginning in 2017, all PAID coaches at member schools shall be required to be certified and will maintain certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED operation. The requirement will be handled the same as the CNLT and the expectation will be that new paid coaches must meet this requirement by their second year.

Skills ContestsDuring the season, athletes may participate in a skills contest with approval of the school. Specific skill contests (punt, pass, and kick, shooting contests e.g., free throws, 3 point, drive, chip and putt) isolate separate skills outside of the traditional competition setting. The skill contest may not include physical contact or extreme fatigue as the actual sport competition. Fun runs are not considered skills contests. There can be no school coach involvement. All other eligibility rules including amateur status apply.

By Terry Erickson, WIAA Officials Liason

As you reflect back on the 2014-2015 basketball season, I hope you achieved the goal of putting your best foot forward each and every time you officiated a game. If that effort was evident, you should feel good about giving players, coaches and fans a meaningful experience.

Quality officials, who are continually striving to improve their game, use the off-season to develop a game plan to reach even greater heights in the up-coming season. Those officials certainly take time for family, hobbies and relaxation. But, they also keep an eye on the horizon with anticipation and excitement for the year ahead.

Consider these ideas for your personal improvement plan for the off-season:

- Strive to improve your level of fitness by developing a plan for additional strength and endurance. You don’t have to necessarily train to run a marathon. You can take yoga classes, become an avid walker, kayak, bike or any number of fitness activities. - Continue to study rules and mechanics. There are plenty of books/magazines that may give you some new ideas on how to improve your game. - Attend camps and clinics. Have the appetite of a life-long learner that craves information and ideas. You are never too old to learn from others.

- Work summer leagues, pre-season scrimmages, and off-season practice games. It’s a great way to meet new people and mentor others.

- Participate in pre-season study groups.

Develop a learning culture with your friends where you can stimulate thoughts and exchange ideas.

- Re-examine your goals and expectations for the up-coming season.Be honest and realistic with your schedule and be satisfied with the level that you are working.

By developing a game plan for next season, you may very well find that you have a renewed sense of energy for that long season ahead.

AN IMPROVEMENT PLAN FOR THE OFFSEASON

Another basketball season has come to a close and I don’t know if basketball in Wisconsin has ever been any better. At the collegiate level the Wisconsin men’s basketball team reaches the national championship game and Stevens Point men win a NCAA DIII national title. I learned a great deal from Coach Ryan a few years ago while an assistant at UW-Platteville and anytime a team with the name Pointers win that has to be a good thing.

At the high school level from the Resch Center to the Kohl there were a number of outstanding team and individual performances as five champions were crowned for both the boys and the girls.

As we approach the summer we will see at least one major change with the passing of unlimited non-school contact in the summer. This was passed at the annual meeting and will go into effect this summer. It will be interesting to see how different programs adjust to the new contact rule.

A number of recommendations were passed recently by the Basketball Coaches Advisory Committee that could have an impact. 18 minute halves and the mercy rule for subvarsity games were among the recommendations by the committee.

Another recommendation would seed all sectionals in half brackets with no allowance to vote to seed by regionals. If that measure were to fail and voting is still required, it was recommended that a simple 50% majority would be required to seed by half-sectional. Also, a school would have to vote in order for their vote to count. Currently, a non-vote is considered a vote to retain the regional groupings.

These are recommendations only. These proposals will next go the Sports Advisory Committee then to the WIAA staff who will take a position on the recommendations, followed by the Advisory Council and finally the Board of Control. If coaches feel strongly about any of these issues they should talk

to their athletic directors and ask them to support their passage by contacting members of Sports Advisory, Advisory Council and/or the Board of Control.

A special thank you to those in charge of the WBCA Girls’ and Boys’ All-Star games. A lot of time effort goes in to making these games the best in the country. The boys’ all-star games are co-chaired by Mike Huser and Tony Scallon. While the girls’ games are co-chaired by Loren Homb and Sam Mathison.

Have a great summer. I will see you at the All-Star Games on June 19th and 20th.

Respectfully yours,Dan Burreson, Mineral Point High School
