#1: Learn to set goals…

• Decide exactly what you want accomplished• Write it down• Set a deadline on your goal• Make a list of everything you need to do to achieve your

goal• Organise list into a plan• Take action on your plan immediately• Resolve to do something everyday that moves you

towards your goal• Plan everyday in advance

Goals help us visualize the activities/objectives which must be accomplished. To set goals effectively you must:

#2: Learn to tackle critical tasks…

• Each day prioritse tasks effectively• Do the more important ones first • Determine importance by the level of impact they can

have on your work/life• Resist the temptation to spend time on less important

tasks• Finishing more important tasks first boosts self-esteem

thus giving emotional strength for other tasks

Do more important things first. The 80/20 rule; 20% of what you do accounts for 80% of your results.

#3: Learn to work in teams…

• Identify your areas of weaknesses and identify people with strengths that complement you

• Learn to delegate areas not within your strengths • In most cases ensure that everyone on the team has

equal amount of work• Follow up proactively on the status of each team mates’

work

We do more when we do things together. There are some tasks that take an enormous amount of time for a single person to do but with a large group of people ; you can get a tremendous amount done.

#4: Learn to focus on your tasks…

• Remove distractions; close out all other browser windows, put your phone away, out of sight and on silent

• Find a quiet place to work, or listen to some music if that helps you (Some enjoy listening to classical or ambient music while working).

• Do one task at a time• Break periodically after long periods of concentration

(setting a timer would help)

Distractions can be a great deterrent to completing tasks. Intense focus enable you complete tasks quickly

#5: Learn to say No…

• Be quick to identify requests you’re not prepared/equipped to handle

• Be assertive in turning down requests you cannot handle• When turning down requests, explain to the other party

your reasons for declining and ensure the relationship is still kept intact

• Do not be in a hurry to commit to a task, when in a dilemma, a simple “I will get back to you with an answer…let me think about this” will do.

“Focusing is about saying No” – Steve Jobs (1955 – 2011). Take on only those commitments that you know you have time for and that you truly care about.
