WHERE IS THE MONKEY?
• The manager has still a minimum of 60 monkeys in a 5 day week, when we assume the 4 subordinates are very considerate.
• The manager, at the end of the week, is in the order of chaos having no idea from where to start first.
• Inside his office the poor manager is juggling with monkeys where outside his subordinates are stating him incompetent.
Who is working for whom??
!!!SATURDAY!!!
• Manager decides to get rid of the monkeys he is carrying on his back and transferring them back to the subordinates
• He will get more DISCRETIONARY TIME as he teaches his subordinates how to take care and feed their own monkeys
WHAT MANAGER DECIDES?
THE “D” DAY
• Manager makes it clear to his subordinates that at no time their monkey will be on his back.
• When they will come with their individual monkeys to him they will also leave it
• Suggestions and help can be taken but only by appointment
• And he will not make any move alone, that is at no time the work will wait for his decision.
STRATEGY APPLIED
The whole game is about INITIATIVE that is the manager has to inculcate in his subordinates to take initiative i.e. feed and take care of their monkeys themselves.
Because as soon as the manager takes initiative the monkey jumps on his back and his discretionary time flies out of the window
WHAT THIS ANALOGY DERIVES: Transferring The Initiative
THE ANATOMY OF MANAGERIAL INTIATIVEManagers can exercise following 5 degree of initiative:
CARE and FEEDING MONKEYS
• Only self imposed time is flexible
• Self imposed time is bifurcated and most of the time is consumed by subordinates
• Subordinate time should be minimized by keeping their monkeys on their back
• Develop the art of taking initiative among the subordinates
• Follow rules while handling monkeys
CONTROL OVER TIME and CONTENT
• As the manager realizes that subordinates should feed their own monkeys, they try to empower their subordinates first. Managers should also learn to trust his subordinates.
• Empowering subordinates’ time allows manager more discretionary or free time which he can allocate according to his requirements and flourish his career.
RESULT: MORE DISCRETIONARY TIME
