MY HERO

By Vedika Bagla, 6 Who says heroes have to own powers, Or that they should be able to climb towers?

Who says that heroes can’t be normal, Or that they are always formal?

Who says heroes have to be boys, Or that they cannot play with toys?

Who says heroes are perfect forever, And they are the only ones who are actually clever?

Because my hero is so not like this, And my hero is not even a “his”!

My mother is my one and only hero, In front of her, everyone else is a zero!

One hug from her can make my day, Her eyes can read everything I want to say!

Now can you declare, Making someone else your hero is fair?

Heroes

By Sanaa Sharma

In the forest of Binglebime,

(Which was famous for its lime)

There were monsters which came,

With two legs and canes.

They tried to drive the animals out,

They even caught and ate the trout.

That night the councils of elders met,

Which had peacock, tiger, bear and a monkey with a clarinet.

“This needs to stop! We need heroes! ” said bear,

While munching on a pear.

(He was strangely vegetarian)

“Yes!” chirped bird, who migrated from the Caribbean.

So it was decided, “We need heroes!” the elders chided.

The heroes were elephant, sparrow, buffalo and liger,

(A cross bred of a lion and tiger)

All the heroes went to the human huts,

Which was guarded by some mutts.

They made short work of that,

Now no fooling around or doing this or that.

To make the long story short,

The humans were taken to animal court.

Now here comes the rather gruesome bit,

So let’s not make too much of it.

They were executed by the pond,

As soon as the monkey beat his gong.

The ones who ran away,

Still stay away from Binglebime to this very day.

Field Of Dreams

By Suhasini Takkar, 7

Grasping into thin air

Dreams we reach but cannot touch,

Dreams we wish would come true,

Things that hurt too much.

Standing on the beach, sand between my toes,

What lies in my future, who will come and go?

The sun beams down on me, as I raise my head and look,

At the vast ocean up ahead, it’s size that I mistook.

I feel so insignificant, compared to this expanse,

What difference will I make, do I even stand a chance?

I realize while standing there, that all I have to do,

Is listen to my heart and my dreams will pull me through.

Only you can believe in yourself, make your dreams come true,

For no one else can do it, the power comes from you.

And your soul is vast, with a light that expands to fill the world,

Because if your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.

Field Of Dreams

By Harnoor Singh ,7

Dancing amidst the flowers,

under the bright , golden sun beams,

the colourful butterflies that belong to a bower,

my kingdom, my field of dreams.

The sky a turquoise blue,

with white fluffy clouds,

like a blanket it seems,

my kingdom, my field of dreams!

The sun dripping down,

like sweet honey from a pot!

The flowers come to life , like fairies it seems,

my kingdom, my field of dreams!

The seven coloured rainbows,

make an arc in the sky,

the shades making a great team,

my kingdom, my field of dreams!

FIELD OF DREAMS

By Tanvi Bahl, 7

Every day when I go to sleep,

On my fluffy pillow.

It takes me to a field of dreams,

Where I rest my head under a shady willow.

There’s lush green grass all around.

From the pinnacle of a mountain,

A deep blue stream goes down, down, down,

And soon becomes a fancy fountain.

As I go about exploring more and more,

I come across a purple bush,

Holding apples galore.

It also has pineapples and abundant cloves.

This is how it goes for me in the field of dreams,

Puts me out of my woes,

And I have a very blissful sleep!

Time

By Aryan Sadh, 8

An evil, wicked, vengeful witch,

She will slay any man,

No matter how rich,

She has mean begging at her feet,

A cruel heart she does possess,

One woman you will never want to meet.

She does not wait for any man,

So run, run away,

As fast as you can,

She has men on the run,

Trust me this woman,

Is no fun.

She always likes to feel in control,

Her killing spree will never end,

In death’s movie she has the main role,

How many men has she led to their doom?

Watching them suffer,

Spinning her evil with a cursed loom.

She will damn every man to hell,

She looks into your sorry eyes,

Makes your workload really swell,

She will not help no matter how hard you try,

Darkness seeps through her veins,

She will look at your dying body and hear you cry.

She will make you feel immense pain,

Never stopping in eternity,

Your bank account will slowly drain,

Everyone longs to get her back,

You will never watch her leave,

For spilling blood she has a knack.

She is wanted in every state,

Do not fall for her,

She lures you in with poisonous bait,

She will steal everything in a jealous rage,

Locking you forevermore,

In a slowly shrinking cage.

So forget her and move away young man,

But you were too late,

She will surely strike her 12th man.

Time

By Nitya Dhingra , 8

I saw the clock ticking by

At the sea, the tide was high

I wanted to know what time had in store

Sometimes less, sometimes I wanted more

I had grown taller, my hair was long

I now knew what was right and wrong

The puppy on the street was now a dog

The weather changed from clouds to fog

The mischievous boy, was now a young man

The old lady, in the sun had got a tan

The iron nail had got a rust

Over time, my friend I could trust

Wrinkles grew on my face

Everything progressed at a steady pace

I saw the ice melt into water

Time had passed, three hours and a quarter

There was a time in life when I couldn’t see

That time and practice made me what I wanted to be

Slowly it had passed, but I knew

After so much time this, only a few could do

The leaves turned from green to gold

Sometimes I wish I could put time to a hold

I saw the moon plunge up into the sky

It brought with him the darkness up high

The sun came up, the sky was blue

Its just one of the magical things time can do

Time

By Pranav Jain, 8

Sit in a machine and travel through time ,

Back to that of the dinosaurs ,

Then move forward to the medieval age ,

And be a part of the many wars .

Skip forward to the present ,

Become a labourer or a peasant ,

Take a cruise on the titanic ,

See how the ship succumbed to panic .

Jump to the future , learn modern electronics ,

Come back to the present and become a mechanic .

Go to the past and witness the Ramayan ,

Visit civilizations like that of the Mayan .

Become a hunter gatherer and climb a tree ,

Make a monument for the world to see .

Go to the moon in 1969 ,

Visit king Solomon's great gold mine .

Become a soldier in world war one ,

See how the Germans were outdone .

Wage a war against Alexander the great ,

And if you can , recheck history's every date .

Destiny’s Curse Ashna Sethi , 9

Dream’s shattered, Hearts cursed, The message so loud but the voices so hushed, Stuck in a state of oblivion, nothing to your name, The moment forever gone, with no chance at fame.

A sense of defeat washes over your soul That one safe place is now and isolated hole. As you feel yourself succumb to the pain, You know that there is but one to blame.

Fate was looking down upon you, The grass bright green and the sky so blue, A destiny to call yours, one step away, That you forget what people had to say,

The cries of a mother, a friend even a foe, A warning as to what life has in store, The while success pushes you there, When fighting for destiny, all is fair.

And this ignorance will haunt you to the end, Hopes once ripped apart are impossible to mend. As time flies by, you will finally see, The toughest blow is the curse of destiny…

Shades of Life

By Varun Bisht, 9

Set offshore, on a bright morning,

With the winds howling through your sails.

Optimism high like the mast in the sky,

Away from home into the waves you glide.

A summer's breeze, on a summer's morning

Is what you truly were yearning

For; a splash on the deck, the sails checked

For a ride into the wild winds.

The Pegasuses in the sky

neigh as they pass by,

As if saying 'Good day to you'

And with your rudder in check

and a with a heart of lead,

You miss the city's bustling morning.

In the summer's heat, a storm rises,

High waves, splash up to the sail.

Winds howl, the sea plays foul

As if cheating you in a child’s game.

And when you have lost heart

and submit yourself up and cling to the plank in fear;

The storm clears out, and with joy you shout

A new chance, a new day is here!

And these are the shades of life!!

Destiny’s Curse

By Zoya S. Hassan, 9

Upon his hands falls the golden, glowing light

Another lash across his back ends the night

And his face lifts to the sky

He hopes in pain that this time he will die

With a heave and a groan

His limbs lift of the wet bed,

And with each painstaking step to the kitchen he walks

The wine to his lip to himself he begins to talk.

It was not his body that took the whips

Her dying handle caress his cheeks and lips

Her head bobs as her breath fades

And yet her words around his sail form a cage

And soon enough, he turns to drinks

He loses control, further into the sadness sinks,

Her pitying words of sorrowful blame

Cause his screams, the peaceful night do main

And her face in his mind flamers once more

Tear streaked face, blossoming red bosom, body on the floor.

Each image strikes harder than the last

A whip that again breaks his tender heart

And morning after morning he wakes up

And fills whiskey into his cup.

Page 13: Time By Devaki Jayal, 6 - Vasant Valley SchoolTime By Devaki Jayal, 6 Time is like an endless stream of words said, things seen Time can change a person in many ways from young and

The alcohol causing torture to the brain

Her laughter ringing in his ear makes him insane.

And his sorrow, his sense of life

Cause destiny, tearful strife

She cannot bless him till he can realize

Until his oblivion ends she cannot forgive

Her curse cast, she looks to others

She blesses or destroys another

And once his time ends

Destiny’s blessing, pure & bright towards him bend.

DESTINY’S CURSE

By Samriddhi Hooda, 9

You pathetic little thing,

You let the fire dance over my fingers,

Let the intoxicating heat sing and sting

And it sang a tune, a cruel one.

Look in the mirror I hope it’s shattered

That’s not me that is not true, it shattered the mirror

And the worst- I loved being murdered

A pyromaniac’s bane and love

Bane and love, bane and love.

You pathetic little thing destiny

You let it leap you let me love it.

You let me kill myself, you let me flick the lighter cap

On, off, on, off

You let me love what must not be loved.

A cigarette is burning between my fingers

The ash is lying, never to be got back.

And I’m flicking it away, flicking it away.

Hoping, somehow destiny’s fiery curse will be flicked away.

JAGGED EDGES

By Riya Kothari , 10

I watch as they size me up

Look me up and down.

Their eyes pierce through me

Like pieces of broken glass

I watch.

They pass their snide comments

They giggle, they laugh

I never miss their looks of wonder

Mixed with sympathetic exclaims

I watch

I watch as they run about

So caught up in the chase

So ruthless, yet so oblivious

So predictable in their ways

I watch

They think they have it sorted out

Planned to every last detail

Never do they question

Never do they interpret

And I,

I watch.

Do I want to be like them?

Do I want to fit in?

Can I be like them someday?

Or do I observe, be a victim to their scrutiny?

Do I watch?

I know I'm not like them

Smooth, perfect, rigid

No, I have my jagged edges

Do I dare smoothen them out?

Twenty five seconds to change your claim,

You succeed and the world will know your name.

Twenty five times you pulled yourself through,

You're dauntless, fearless and perfect too.

To the twenty five warriors that lost their lives,

In their memory a prayer arrives.

For the girl who was tortured and gave up at twenty five,

No one bothered until she picked up the knife.

Twenty five years of marriage that went to waste,

The decisions you regret the most are made in a haste.

For the twenty five times he returned to apologize,

It was way too late by the time you realized...

Twenty five years you held her memory tight,

Did everything have to end in a fight ?

Twenty five years he waited for her to come home,

But his despise grew stronger, he was all alone.

Twenty five pages and he was in tears,

Her sweet voice seemed to ring in his ears.

Twenty five glances and he was deep in her arms,

In his eyes she saw constellations,

She felt loved with the touch of his palms.

Twenty five lovers, yet he was the one...

Twenty five days and their infinity was done.

Twenty five hours and now down to the last,

Twenty five shades of anxiety...

Time had flown by too fast.

Twenty five times she felt the pain,

Now he was gone and she was in vain.

Oblivion is inevitable and death is too,

And there are only twenty five letters in the alphabet,

Without you.

Jagged Edges

By Aanchal Sharrma , 10

Standing here all alone, amidst the dark

Just embracing the silent night, then a distant bark,

The memories of the recent past haunt you till eternity

No place was home, neither is, nor will ever be.

Torn apart by the experience, sleeping with your fear

Letting life bring the end more near,

Remembering that moment when time did not heal

Neither did the onlookers ever feel.

The reason for my existence remains unknown

The caretakers left me here, all alone,

And I was met with fate of a path I didn’t choose,

The torture weakened by strength, all faith I did loose.

I was betrayed upon a temple of sin,

Beaten for every tear, the devils did win,

Left me with no remorse, torture till my peace was torn

I wore that shameful face of resistance, I had never worn.

I was fed with harsh words till my stomach was too full to eat

Broken into tiny pieces, all days did were repeat,

Struck from the rudest lash of pain

The scars speak for themselves, how did I sustain?

So leaving that torture, I left that life behind

Yearning for the morning sun to help me unwind,

With my shattered skin, I walk but I do shake

A light touch could see the past, could see me break.

But those jagged edges do make strong,

And just ask me to wait and to keep holding on.

CHECK MATE

By Mihika Johorey, 11

She ran on, not knowing where she would go,

She looked at the haze of the night around,

Her heart beat faster, she wished he would show.

Check mate, he whispered, but only he heard the sound.

The rustle of dry leaves with every step that they took,

The breaking of a twig amidst a jungle of only dark.

She cried out once, and in her frail boots she shook.

Check mate, he said, this time he would not miss his mark.

She told herself that it was time to face her fears,

And for the last time, she thought of all those that she had loved.

She readied herself-said a prayer and wiped her tears,

Check mate, he screamed, the end was near.

At last, she showed himself to her,

His handsome face, once loved, was strewn with soot.

She came closer to him, looking as pretty as she had ever,

Check mate, he whispered, and readied his gun to shoot.

Checkmate

By Malika Oak, 11

Your tables wont turn,

You’re treading through quicksand.

Try as hard as you might,

the world will drown in your hands.

Is your laugh really genuine?

Don’t answer right away.

Consider the glitter in your eyes

might just be tears at bay.

‘Erchomai’, I’m coming,

don’t you dare push and resist.

Like a delicate piece of intricate glass,

the pressure will only break you to bits.

Do my words enervate you?

If you admit it, I’ll be kind.

I don’t normally keep promises,

but maybe the past can be put behind.

That power that radiates off me,

that’s not your imagination.

That’s not a dream from which you can awake

when you’ve reached optimum frustration.

You’re not standing so tall.

Did I see a tremble there?

‘Venti’, I have come,

and sadly I don’t play fair.

Look around at you dwindling manpower

up against the mighty outcomes of fat.

That expression of defeat is addictive.

You’re deliciously cornered in- Checkmate.

Checkmate

By Rehan Luthra 11

Minefield, one black, one white,

Each move, determines his plight

Skip one, hop two,

Knock the other, off his horse shoe.

A wall of strength,

Each a pillar there hence,

March ahead, spot a foe,

Jump diagonally, he is no more.

We are two, we are a pair,

Step in front, face despair

Protecting our leader, it is no hassle,

Request a swap, and we will castle.

We are two, two peas in a pod,

Each a savior, each a God

Come in line, come across,

Scream with fear, your life is lost.

Centre of attention, leader of the game

Control the field, I am the main

Back, forth, fall, rise

Left, right, meet your demise.

Their lives on him, they do depend

Protecting him, save, defend.

Attracting attack, like wolves and cattle,

If he's done, Checkmate! You've won the battle.

By Aniruddha Jaffa 11

He moved the black rook assiduously

Fully knowing the consequences

His daring ploy had exposed

His opponent’s crumbling defences

The adversary’s eyes were deep in thought

But his own were deeper still

Sharp like those of a hawk

Diving in to make the kill

He sensed fear and indecision

As the next move wasn’t well thought out

“I’ve got this, ” thought he

“I’ve got this without a doubt”

Next he moved his valiant knight

In response to the previous turn

A gentle smirk marked his face

As he watched his opponent burn

This was the end of

A battle of valour and grit

This was check mate

And both the warriors knew it

And on those black and white squares

Fate had been decided once more

One responded in subtle elation

The other was shown out the door.

Invisible City-Lights Out

By Zahra Choudhury,12

They asked why I looked at everyone and

why I could see through, so then

asked what I saw in you,

and I said, that the universe of colliding atoms,

growing galaxies and exploding stars made you.

You are stardust of a deadened star. It's rather

tragically beautiful that death can be

romantic and poetic and destroying. So,

maybe the poets were right and only love

is the answer. Maybe.

I have been watching through the haze and

glare, your exodus of faces. But,

not faces, never faces. You're not a person, the

world is not a person, worlds and cities swirled

into one body, and the body loves you, the

city loves you. It does everything to make you

breathe and bleed. I just stay and look at mirrors

with smoke, but all of them look right through me.

I feel as if the flowers and your voice just passed through

me. But since I am invisible, intangible

I can see the cities in your eyes, like mine. There

is so much tragedy in all of them, because I can

see you, till the bone and brain, but you cannot see me.

So I watched as the rest of you, searched and rummaged

in the skin, seams and crevices of other cities, but

only left them crumbling and desolate.

Nobody can love a ghost town, because

it comes with a dead past and a death

wish. As the story goes.

They both had cities of grey, and their

skin was blueberry pale, but the masks

oh, the masks, they were ignorant,

then lonely, then dead.

I, sick of all I have seen as my

city dies inside of me. So tired if

being unseen, unheard but always listening.

So I watched enough with my jaded eyes,

and the city lights go out. Black inky,

all your faces with your cities.Empty.

So, I, quiet, still. I drive off,

the coast of Sanity.

No flowers remember my name.

INVISIBLE CITIES

By Abhiruchi Rathi, 12

The city of lights and haven of smiles,

This huge fragment of the world here lies,

These merry children all out in the rains,

The older take their daily strides.

But all is not gay here, in the city of lights.

A handful right here, just out our sight,

Bathe in muck and make foul cries.

We pause to grieve, pity their lives

And resume our battles for worthless desire,

But all shouldn’t be gay here, in the city of lights.

Hovelled shacks and sleepless nights,

These people have no given rights.

The world wants to haul them up,

But not give a hand and an assuring smile?

They beg, they cry, our countrymen here die!

Were we always such, to color our lives

But leave theirs out in no hope of light?

Our cozy beds and silk sheets

Fail to remind us of those on the streets,

Till the wee of dawn they stand upright,

But burdened, miserable and full of plight.

Does one deserve to be gay, in the city of lights?

Have we all not lost our sight,

Blindened by mere money pride?

To lose that humanity which kept us all bind,

Maybe we commit a daily crime.

But now come along my countrymen!

Let’s all save the time, and unite,

Page 24: Time By Devaki Jayal, 6 - Vasant Valley SchoolTime By Devaki Jayal, 6 Time is like an endless stream of words said, things seen Time can change a person in many ways from young and

To pull these poor out of now where they reside,

And celebrate joy in native light.

My country, it’s all to us,

Let’s really see these invisible cities,

Which abut each villa all the day,

But yet escape the impression to create

A recast for well lives today.

Let us see these invisible cities

Which have been in misery for eternity.

Invisible City

By Aanya Priya Dalmia, 12

A nostalgic feeling overcomes her,

At 66, her childhood is a blur,

Looking at children play, happiness does abound.

Her window is the invisible city she has found.

On one side crime and terrorism ignite,

For women’s rights she has to fight.

Negativity and pessimism fill the leaden skies,

No solutions remain, for help she cries.

On the other side, children laugh and play,

Running helter skelter as if gone astray,

Gone are the biting cold winds, and days gray and gloom,

Sunshine flowers and happiness in this spring bloom.

As the first burst of green adorns each tree,

It fills her with hope, a life, a heart full of glee.

Her city is not fragmented by narrow walls,

Her journey is filled with smiles, though an end calls.

She has wisdom to leave negativity behind,

Knowing the utopia would, she can find

She never gives up, determined to move on,

Believing after the darkest might does come dawn.

Spell A Rebel

By Revant Soni, 12

Not eaten for a night or two

Suffering a cough and a flu

The hungry boy holds his stomach, empty

And stares into his master’s store, with food in plenty

He goes inside and grabs a bite

Of his master’s mistresses Turkish delight

He looks behind to see his doom

His master stands tall with a broom

Down comes the handle that will surely leave a mark

He felt the pain in his face like a throbbing spark

His master grabbed his collar “lets go to the police station”

“And if you complain to them, I will personally conduct your cremation.”

So slapped and bruised the boy was taken to the cops

He figures even jail would be better that those mops

At the station the cops were horrified at what had taken place

But the master had not yet played his final ace

Though the cops threatened the master against child abuse

Their attempts to jail him were of absolutely no use

The master took out a note or two from his bulging pocket

As the commissioners eyes moved not an inch from its socket

Page 27: Time By Devaki Jayal, 6 - Vasant Valley SchoolTime By Devaki Jayal, 6 Time is like an endless stream of words said, things seen Time can change a person in many ways from young and

No words were said but we all understood

Money made more impact than the boy ever could

He was dragged into a cell, the master indeed had won

He bade goodbye to the days he could play in the sun

Justice for sure was something that has not been served

Too bad for the boy there was nobody to observe

With worn out shorts and a shirt that was torn

This got him thinking and a rebel was born.
