    Synopsis of Time for Murder

    MissMollieRalstonistheowneroftheHotelMonkswell,asmallhotelnearLondon.Sheinherited

    thehotelfromheraunt.Inthepast,thehotelwasacharmingbuilding.Now,itisrun-downand

    tatty.Theoriginalfurnitureanddecorarelookingoldandtired.Theoorboardssqueakandthere

    isascary,spookyatmosphere.Youcouldsay,itisthesortofplacewhereamurdermighthappen.

    TonightistherstnightthatMissMolliewillopenthehoteltoguests.Sheistidyingthehoteland

    as the play begins there is an important radio broadcast...

    There is a sudden call from the police to inform Miss Mollie of a problem. The phone line is cut, but

    then a policeman, named Sergeant Trotter, arrives at the hotel. Sergeant Trotter starts to tell Miss

    MollieastoryconnectedtothemurderinLondon.Itisthestorythatwehaveheardaboutonthe

    radio. The story that Sergeant Trotter tells is about the foster mother Maureen Lyon and the three

    childrensheabused.ThechildrenareknownastheThreeBlindMice.Whentheywerechildren

    they lived on a farm near to the hotel. The youngest child, a boy, died because of the cruelty and

    MaureenLyonwassenttojail.Thetwoolderchildren,aboyandagirlweresentawayandnow

    nobodyknowswheretheyare.TrottersaysthathethinksoneofthemhaskilledMaureenLyon

    andiscomingtoHotelMonkswelltokillagain!HebelievestheThreeBlindMiceareseeking

    theirrevenge.TheguestsintheHotelMonkswellarenotwhotheyseemtobeandsoonanother

    murdercouldtakeplace...butwhocouldbethekillerandwhatisthetrueidentityoftheguests?

    We shall soon see....

    The radio is switched off and the guests begin to arrive at

    the hotel. First to arrive is Mr. Christopher Wren, a student

    ofarchitecture.Heisveryimpressedwiththehotel.Nextto

    arriveisMrs.Boyle.Mrs.Boyleisaseriousandseverewoman.

    She used to be a magistrate in court and she complains a lot,

    especially about thehotel. Thirdto arrive isMiss.Casewell,

    ayoungsocialistwithatroubledpast.Followingthearrivalof

    MissCasewellistheCommanderMetcalf.CommanderMetcalf

    is a member of the army and is a sensible and handsome man.

    The last person to arrive is an unexpected guest. He is a man

    called Paravicini. He says that his car has crashed on the roadoutside and he needs a hotel for the night. He appears to have a

    strong Italian accent and behaves suspiciously. As the evening

    unfolds, all the guests begin to act more and more strangely.

    There has been a murder in Paddington, in the centre of London.

    The victim is a lady, her name is Maureen Lyon. Years ago, she was a foster

    mother who was sentenced to jail for cruelty to her children.

    The police are looking for a suspect in connection with the murder.

    The suspect is wearing a dark coat, a white scarf and a red hat.

    SESSION 3: TOWARD THE ENDBBefore

    Activity 1: Giving Stage Directions

    In every theatre company there is a director. The directors job is to organise and direct the

    actorswhoplaythecharacters.Inorderfortheactorstoplaytheirroleswell,thedirectorgives

    the stage directions.

    Thedirectorwantstheactorstoactinawaythatexpressesthefeelingsintheplayandtheatmosphereonstage.Stagedirectionsarewritteninascriptbetweenbracketsandtheyusually

    includeanadverb+lyword,forexample

    begins to explain about the murder of Maureen Lyon.

    Right at that moment, the man skiing bumps against the windows. The bell rings

    and Mollie comes to open the door.
