Students are off to the State Finals!

Congratulations to the students who participated in the Greater Western Zone Cross Country Event on Monday. We had excellent performances across year levels (P-12).

The following students have qualified for the state finals: Zach Ellemor (Year 5), Susanna Ryan (Year 6), Logan Cuthall (Year 8), Heidi Stansfield (Year 8) and Ben Matthews (Year 8).

Next Friday 17th June we will be hosting Monkey, Loggy & The Big Fella from Coast FM broadcasting live from the Timboon P12 School Hall from 7:00am-10:00am. We will be providing a free continental breakfast, there will also be other local businesses (pop up shops) here selling items (including food). At the end of the program we will also be putting on a special morning tea for our local dairy farmers to attend and have a catch up. Parents are encouraged to being their children in earlier (before the buses). This is an open event and we encourage all Timboon & surrounding community members to attend. We encourage all of our farmers to tune in while milking or working on the tractor and we would love to see you here for a bit of morning tea.

Uniform reminders (school dress code policy)

Uniform: All students are expected to wear the correct uniform.

As we approach winter it is important that students remain

warm and comfortable. There are a number of uniform items

available to support this including a warm waterproof school

jacket, a school beanie and scarf. All items can be purchased

through LOWES in Warrnambool. Layby options are available.

School beanies and scarves can be purchased through the school

canteen. Alternatives to this are not acceptable; follow up from

your classroom/form group/ Year level coordinators will occur

on a regular basis. The school is always willing to support

families in need – if you require support please contact the

school.

Hats are only to be worn during the summer months from Sep

1st

to April 30th

. Hats are not to be worn during the winter

months unless negotiated.

CYBERSAFETY WORKSHOP (STUDENTS)

On June 14th

we have Tim Powell from Values for Life Education

conducting the following presentations:

Year 5 & 6 students- Cyber Savvy, the influence of ICT on our lives. This workshop will cover:

Development of communication through history

The ways people interact and communicate through ICT

Potential negative effects of ICT on ourselves in both our physical and mental health

Responsibilities associated with the use of ICT

The media can be a big influence, is commercially driven and is not always real

Our self-worth – i.e. what we are (e.g. our skills or what we look like) is different to who we are (our character and values)

Factors in helping us to be resilient – a core set of values that can remind us what is important despite our influences and circumstances

Year 7 & 8 students- Plugged In, Cyber safety and building real community

Highlight the importance of healthy relationships

Explain why our culture is becoming socially deficient

Discuss the difference between the virtual and offline world

Promote ways in which we can be safe online and build depth to our offline relationships

Develop ways in which we can better connect within our school, family, friends and our community

The promotion of empathy, community and teamwork

EXPERIENCE RMIT – Would you like to learn more about studying at RMIT? The RMIT ’Experience Days’ Event program is now available, giving Year 10 – 12 students the opportunity to attend free events and engage in workshops in business, science, social impact, health and medical sciences, engineering, marketing and communications, property and project management and design, and experience life on campus. Go to: www.rmit.edu.au/experiencedays, then to Event Program for more information and to book. The experience days are in the Term 2 holiday break. WHERE CAN I STUDY PHYSIOTHERAPY? Physiotherapy is a popular choice of career, with many aspiring physiotherapists hoping to become sports physiotherapists. The reality is of course, that many physiotherapists work in other settings such as hospitals, community health centres, in mental health, and in rehabilitation, often with elderly patients. In Victoria, physiotherapy is taught at La Trobe, Melbourne and Monash universities, and, from 2017, at Australian Catholic University (ACU) in Ballarat. The ATAR required for entry to physiotherapy is very high due to the popularity of the course, and to the fact that places are limited. La Trobe uses the ATAR for selection, Monash uses the ATAR and an interview, while at Melbourne, as with many of their degrees, physiotherapy is studied as a post-graduate degree. Applicants for Melbourne must have completed an undergraduate degree with human anatomy and human physiology subjects. The aim of ACU offering physiotherapy in Ballarat is to help tackle the shortage of healthcare professionals in the Ballarat region by offering local training opportunities. There will be up to 50 student places. Purpose-built facilities will be available on campus and there will be access to laboratories, hospitals and health services in the region. The prerequisites for the ACU course are: Units 3 and 4 – a minimum study score of 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English, and a minimum study score of 25 in one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics. WHAT IS THE ASPIRE GENERATION? As noted previously, La Trobe university offers the Aspire Early Admissions Program for Year 12 students applying for La Trobe degrees (applications opened on 1 June and close on 31 August at www.latrobe.edu.au/aspire). In addition, La Trobe desires to promote the ambition of the next generation to come

together and solve pressing issues facing our global communities. As a result, La Trobe is launching the Aspire Generation for Year 10-12 students. This is a community of young people connected by their aspiration to make a difference through community service and leadership. The Aspire Generation will be empowered to drive change through community engagement, volunteerism and leadership opportunities. For example, La Trobe’s recent partnership with Orange Sky Laundry underpins the ongoing commitment to driving social change. Students in years 10-12 can register their interest online via the Aspire Generation page.

SPRING INTO THE GREAT OUTDOORS IN THE HOLIDAYS! This is early notice of an experience of a lifetime. Find out what it is like to be an Outdoor and Environmental Education student at La Trobe university in the September School Holiday Program. When: 26-30 September, 2016; Where: Either canoeing on the Murray River OR bushwalking and climbing at Kooyoora State Park; Cost: $100 (including food/equipment). ARE YOU INTERESTED IN AUSTRALIAN POLITICS AND PUBLIC POLICY? If yes, why not apply for the John Button Prize. The University of Melbourne’s School of Government is offering a $2,500 prize to a Year 10-12 student who successfully expresses their ideas about Australian politics and public policy. The subject might be Australia’s population, climate change, reconciliation with Indigenous Australians, water, asylum seekers, education, health, or the state of the Arts (these are just a guide). The judges want to see clear thinking, enlivened by a sense of passion, about Australia’s future. Please apply online through the Faculty of Arts web page.
