Student Absences We are again asking that you notify the school by 8:45 AM if your child will be absent or late from school. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, please send a note with your child prior to the absence. This is the most effective way for the school to monitor your child’s attendance. If you do not know in advance or if your child is not in school by 9 AM we will make an effort to contact you as to the whereabouts of your child. When your child is absent if we do not speak to you personally or if you do not send a note your child will be considered UNEXCUSED.

Notice to Parents – Childfind This notice is to inform the patrons of the Exeter-Milligan District 01 that: Public Law 94-142 and State Rule 51 and 54 mandate that free appropriate public education is available to each handicapped child, years 0-21, who reside in a local school district. Handicapped children are defined as: Physically Handicapped, Visually Handicapped, Acoustically Handicapped, Speech Handicapped, Orthopedically Handicapped, Educable Mentally Handicapped, Behaviorally Impaired, Specific Learning Disabled, Mentally Retarded, Multi-Handicapped, Home and Hospital Bound. (By reason, thereof, require special education and related services.) If you feel that your child may qualify under any of the above categories please contact Paul Sheffield Superintendent, Exeter-Milligan Public School District #01, Exeter, NE. 402-266-5911.

Excessive Absence Reminder If a student is deemed as being excessively absent, that student shall be ineligible for all activities (which includes practices and contests, overnight trips). Students will have the opportunity to "make-up" absences, at the discretion of the administration. A student may regain their eligibility once they are no longer considered excessively absent, as determined by the administration.

JUNIOR PARENTS On Tuesday, April 2nd, ALL juniors will be taking the ACT. This will be done in place of state assessments for the juniors. There is no cost to the students and it is considered an official test so the scores may be sent to colleges. If they miss the day there is only one other day (in May) to make it up. This is state-mandated so we have to have everyone take it. Prior to the test we will be doing the John Baylor prep to help our students prepare. Note: even if a student has taken the ACT prior to this date they are still required to take it on that date. If you have any questions please contact Denice Kovanda [email protected]

Hi, everyone! I am the English and Journalism/Digital Media teacher at Exeter-Milligan High School. Each month, my journalism students write a blog post based on a topic of their choice. We feature one of these blog posts in the school’s monthly newsletter. I am excited for you to read some of our students’ work. I enjoy reading the thoughts and reflections that the students share in their blog posts, and I am excited to share their writing with you as well! Miss Stutzman

Spring By: James Becker, Senior

Spring is my favorite season and comes with a lot of upsides. I love spring

because it marks the beginning of warm weather. I personally don’t like cold weather because it’s hard to do anything outside. With spring, I can go fishing or golfing. Golf is my favorite sport and one of my favorite hobbies. When the weather is warm, it’s always a good time to golf. When there’s golf, there’s also a time to meet new people. I’ve met a lot of people through golf meets, and I became good friends with them. I met a lot of people from schools that I’ve never been to.

Spring also marks the end of the school year. I always loved summer breaks

when I was a kid because I could go out and do what I want. I could ride my bike around town or go to the pool. The warm weather also brings out the fish. Fishing is one of my favorite hobbies and is always a good time. Fishing can be relaxing and therapeutic. Nothing is better than going fishing and clearing my mind. Fishing can also be fun with friends. Sometimes, you don’t feel like fishing alone, and you want to fish with your friends. Sometimes, we’ll pick out a Saturday night and go out fishing.

The last thing I like about spring is the longer days. In the winter, the sun will go down at 5 p.m. In the spring, however, it goes down later and later. It eventually gets to the point where the sun is going down at 8 or 9 p.m. Spring is my favorite season, and I can’t wait for it to be here.

February “Leaders Of The Pack” were Kalvin Lock and Alivia Luzum. Both students were recognized for their respectful leadership. Not only did Kalvin and Alivia do a great job of respecting peers and adults, they showed great self respect. They also did a great job of following expectations on a consistent basis! Nice work, Kalvin and Alivia!

Kids Heart Challenge

Did you know that our elementary school in Milligan is participating in the Kids Heart Challenge

with the American Heart Association this year? Yes, that's right! Our school is proud to partner

with the American Heart Association. Over the next few weeks, the students will be having fun

learning about their heart with the Heart Heroes while raising money to help fund lifesaving

research. Our school goal is to raise $2,500. Last year, we raised $2,100 while participating in

Jump Rope for Heart with our K-2nd graders in Exeter. On February 18, we will officially kicked

off our Kids Heart Challenge event with our 3rd-6th graders in Milligan. We learned about the

Heart Heroes, how the heart works, how exercise can be fun and how raising money can save

lives! If you would like to start the fun, you can register your student by going to

heart.org/kidsheartchallenge and asking them to take one of the important health challenges.

All donations are due on Friday, March 15. Thank you for helping a great cause!

March NEWS

Kindergarten Registration, Move-Up Day and Elementary Field Day are ALL Right Around the Corner

If you plan to enroll your child in kindergarten for the fall of 2019, please plan to attend Kindergarten Round-Up on Friday, May 3 at 8:15am in the community classroom at the Exeter site. Move-Up Day for all elementary grades as well as a Field Day is also scheduled for this date. Move up day will be in the morning and field day will take place in the afternoon starting at noon at the Exeter track. During kindergarten round-up, I will give a short presentation on the logistics that go along with having a child in school at Exeter-Milligan. Marilyn Pribyl, the school nurse, and Mrs. Myers, the Speech/Language Pathologist will also speak with you briefly. Mrs. Pettygrove, the kindergarten teacher, will be available to answer any questions you may have about the daily schedule in the kindergarten room and the needed school supplies for August. You can enroll your kindergartener electronically using this link: http://tinyurl.com/hraoq5a. You can also access all mandatory kindergarten forms on my website using the following link: http://tinyurl.com/hhgsf9h. Click on the “Kindergarten Entrance Info/Forms” along the left hand side of my website. I will have copies of these forms available at Kindergarten Round-Up. Please be sure to bring your child’s state issued birth certificate with you to Round-Up. We can make copies and return it to you that day. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at school. Mrs. Kroll

VIEW FROM THE FRONT OFFICE

In the immortal words of Harry Carey, “HOLY COW!” The weather we have been

experiencing lately has been one for the ages. There was a reason I moved out of the North

Land, but this winter has reminded me of when I was back, living in the frozen tundra.

Unfortunately, the other day I discovered myself saying, “Well, back in my day…”

As many of you are aware, I was born and raised in Minnesota. Snow and bad weather

were an every day occurance. I remember my brother and I “walking the blizzard,” heading

downtown with a few quarters in our pockets to play some video games and enjoy an ice-cold,

black cherry soda. It never ceased to amaze me how some farmers could ALWAYS make it to

town to have that cup of coffee, even when the visibility was near zero and the roads were blown

shut. I can still hear the sounds of Donkey Kong and Galaxians and taste that black cherry soda.

Oh, those were the days!

Isn’t it amazing, though, how much we really do adapt to our surroundings? Sometimes

the high for the day was -20°F, but once it got up to O°F, we thought it was a heat wave and tried

to go outside without a coat. My mom would constantly yell at us to put our coats on or we

would catch P-neumonia (for some reason she always pronounced the P). My mom had some

other quirky things about her, but I’ll save those for some more articles – some are rather

interesting. Anyway, back to my train of thought here, oh yes, adapting to the surroundings. It

is amazing how we adapted; we just rolled with the flow. Now, the adults didn’t adapt as well,

but for the kids, it was a piece of cake.

Adapting to change (or change in general) is not as difficult as it sounds. It is all in our

perspective. If we go with the positive attitude that this is the best for all involved, then the

transition should be smooth. If the attitude is negative, we drag our feet, and the transition will

Page 11: Timber’Tracks’ Exeter/Milligan’Public’Schools’ March,’2019’...Please make checks payable to Dean Filipi. If you have questions, please contact Mr. Filipi at 266-5911

be rough and possibly unbearable. Change is a way to improve – to take what has been done and

tweak it to make it better (a first order change) or to totally redo what has been done in the past

(a second order change).

There may be times when we want to change something and to most of us it will be

considered a first order change – just tweaking what has been done in the past. However, to

others, it may be perceived as a second order change – a total upheaval of what’s been done.

Either way, it is a chance to make improvements and prepare ourselves for the future. If we are

complacent with where we are, then we get stagnant and do not move onward and upward. In

my view, complacency is the breeding ground for failure.

It is perfectly normal to be happy with the status quo – the way things have always been

done. By keeping and doing things the same, everyone knows what to expect and there aren’t

any surprises. But how can we expect to get a different outcome if we don’t change what we are

doing to get that outcome? Think of it this way: A coach must make adjustments at halftime,

because if something didn’t work in the first half, then it definitely won’t work in the second.

The outcome did not change because the tweaks necessary to improve the results were never

made. If we keep on doing the same thing, we will get the same outcome. To get a different

outcome, the inputs have to change. It’s ok to think outside the box and wonder, “what if?” The

only way to improve is to challenge oneself and step outside of the comfort zone. Only then will

great things happen!

Thought for the month:

Change is the process by which the future invades our lives. Alvin Toffler
