Tim’s CornerDealing With Stress :)
How’s your stress level? Is it anunderstatement to say thatlearning to manage stress andcope with whatever life throws atus is a challenge? A long time ago,I heard two different examplesthat were helpful. They resonatedwith me. See if they do for youwhat they did for me.
A lecturer raised a glass of waterand asked a tricky question, “Howheavy is this?” Most attempted toguess the actual weight. Theteacher said, “The absolute weightdoesn’t matter...it depends on howlong you try and hold it.” I caneasily hold it for a minute. If Ihold it for one hour, I might havea sore arm. But if I try and hold itfor a day, I might have a majormedical issue. In each case, it’s thesame weight but the longer I hold it,the ‘heavier’ it becomes. I’m sureyou get the point: dealing withstress is no different. The longerwe hang onto stress, the heavier itbecomes. And before long, it eatsus alive and we find ourselvesheaded down an emotionallydestructive path. Stress is like theglass of water. We have to put itdown and rest for a while before
picking it up again. Oncere-charged and refreshed, wecarry on.
The late Peter Marshall oncewrote about a sign he encounteredwhile driving through the lovelyScottish highlands. He rounded abend and came across a sign thatdeclared: ‘Beware of FallingRocks’. He concluded that signwas not ‘healthy’, as it shouldhave read: ‘Beware of FallenRocks’. Peter highlighted the hugedifference between ‘falling’ and‘fallen’. Too many of us wasteemotional energy looking for ‘falling’rocks (i.e., worrying about whatmight happen) versus dealingpositively with those vicissitudes thatactually come into our lives. As kids, all of us heard that worry can bedestructive but as adults, too oftenwe allow it to consume andparalyze us.
The message: try not to hangonto that heavy ‘glass of water’and resist worrying about what‘rocks’ might fall out of the sky!Although it is easier said thandone, don’t you agree that it issound advice? As the dog days ofsummer are upon us, it’s a goodtime to take a breather, set asideworry and de-stress. A great way tohelp in that endeavor is to plug-into the wonderful activity offeringsthis month.Hope you have a happy and healthy
August!

Freshly Cut GrassStimulates Your BrainThe scent of just-cut grass is a
familiar one this time of year. Notonly is it instantly recognizable, but it can also be powerful.Neuroscientists say a freshlymowed lawn releases chemicalsthat can affect the parts of thebrain that produce happiness andrelaxation and may prevent celldamage that can cause age-relatedmemory loss. The researchers haveeven bottled the aroma into aspray so that people can reap thebenefits anytime.

What is influenza (flu)? Theflu is a contagious respiratoryillness caused by viruses thatinfect the nose, throat and lungs. The best way to prevent the flu isby getting a flu vaccine each yearand washing your hands.
Signs and symptoms of flu.People who have the flu often feelsome or all of these symptoms:fever, cough, sore throat, runny orstuffy nose, body aches, headaches, fatigue, and sometimesvomiting and diarrhea, thoughthis is more common in children.
How flu spreads. Expertsbelieve that flu viruses spreadmainly by droplets made whenpeople with flu cough, sneeze ortalk. These droplets land inmouths or noses of other people.Less often, a person might also getthe flu by touching a surface. You
may be able to pass on the flu tosomeone else before you knowyou are sick or while you are sick. Most healthy adults may be ableto infect others beginning 1 daybefore symptoms develop and upto 5 to 7 days after. Some people, especially young children andpeople with weakened immunesystems, might be able to infectothers for an even longer time.
How serious is the flu? It isunpredictable, varying widely byseason. Factors of influence: whatflu viruses are spreading, howmuch flu vaccine is available andthe number who take advantageof it, when vaccine is available, and how well the flu vaccine ismatched to flu viruses. Certainpeople are at greater risk forserious complications if they getthe flu. This includes older people, young children, pregnant womenand people with certain healthconditions.
