LOOKING FORWARD TO AN EXCITING SEASON! September is the start of a very busy season

of programs and exhibits at JMOF-FIU. We

look forward to a fantastic roster including

academic lectures and classes presented

by FIU Jewish Studies, family programs, a

screening of a documentary inspired by one

of our past exhibits, a series of events with

local art collectors, and a fantastic brunch in honor of Art Basel Miami

Beach. Our current exhibit Growers, Grocers, and Gefilte Fish will close

with a fun afternoon featuring celebrity judges for our Recipe Contest,

"From My Family's Kitchen” (see page 3). Opening in September, is an

exhibit that is close to my heart… From a Coin Toss Into Politics: The

Life of a Senator, chronicling the political career of my father, Richard

B. Stone, including his serving as U.S. Senator from 1975-1980.

Later in the Fall, JMOF-FIU presents an exhibition curated by Bernice

Steinbaum entitled, The Chosen: Selected Works from Florida Jewish

Art Collectors. This groundbreaking exhibition brings together Jewish

art collectors who have never been presented together, along with

original art works from their personal collections. Needless to say, we

are kicking-off the season with a bang…I wish you and yours a happy,

healthy and peaceful New Year and I hope to see you here very soon!

Exhibit

The time-honored tradition of tossing a coin is used all over the world to make decisions or resolve arguments both large and small, from which team gets the ball to start

the game to which family member gets the last piece of cake. Though there is no proven history of how this tradition got started, many believe coin flipping began in Roman times as a game known as navia aut caput, or ship or head, as some coins had a ship on one side and the head of the emperor on the other.

Some coin tosses have influenced the course of history, such as in the case of Senator Richard B. Stone. When a new Florida Senate seat was created in Dade County in 1967, both Stone, Miami City Attorney at the time, and his friend Maurice Ferré, president of Maule Industries, wanted to run. Political campaign consultant Stephen Ross tried unsuccessfully to convince one of them to bow out, so they flipped a coin to see who would run. The outcome solidified Stone’s entry into a 40-year career of public service.

This colorful exhibit includes photographs, documents, official correspondence and artifacts illustrating Senator Stone’s fascinating Florida story, from his early years on Miami Beach to the elegant ball gowns worn by his “First Lady” Marlene at the White House State dinners. The exhibit includes highlights of his service as Florida State Senator, Secretary of State, U.S. Senator and his prestigious Ambassadorships in Central America and Denmark.

Practically a native Floridian, Richard B. Stone was born in New York City and moved to Miami Beach with his family when he was just six months old. Stone grew up living in the Blackstone Hotel, which was built by his father, Alfred, and grandfather, Nathan, to accommodate Jewish tourists who were turned away from other hotels on Miami Beach since they were Jewish. Located at Eighth and Washington Avenue, the Blackstone opened on January 14, 1930 as the largest hotel on South Beach at the time, and also the tallest building on Miami Beach for seven years.

Stone attended Dade County public schools and Georgia Military College in Milledgeville and after graduating from Harvard University and Columbia Law School, he returned to his home state and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1955. He began his practice at the firm Stone, Bittel, Langer, Blass & Corrigan. His success working on Robert King High’s campaign for Mayor of Miami spurred High to choose Stone to replace John R. Barrett as Miami City Attorney (1966-67).

In 1967, when a new Florida Senate seat was created in District 48 and the historic coin toss occurred, Stone resigned as Miami City Attorney to begin his campaign for the Senate seat. In his run for Secretary of State, his push for “government in the sunshine” appealed to Florida’s diverse constituency from Key West to Pensacola Florida, as did his ability to relate to all sectors of the state’s 67 counties. He even learned to play “Dixie” on the harmonica and spoons, using this talent as a friendly icebreaker wherever he campaigned. He served as Florida State Senator (1967-70) and Secretary of State until 1974.

When the U.S. Senate seat held by Edward J. Gurney was vacated in 1974, due to Gurney’s decision not to seek reelection after he was indicted on bribery, conspiracy and perjury charges, Stone resigned as Secretary of State to throw his hat in the ring with 10 other hopefuls in the Democratic primary. As Congressman Bill Gunter failed to pull the required majority needed, a run-off ensued between Stone and Gunter, which Stone won with a close margin of less than 1% of the votes. This pitted him as the underdog against the millionaire drug store chain owner Jack Eckerd in the general election. He received 43% of the vote, Jack Eckerd got 41% and American Party’s John Grady got 16%. Stone’s narrow defeat of Eckerd was considered a major upset! He was the first U.S. Senator elected with a minority vote in Florida since the office was made elective in 1913. Minority party candidates previously entered the fray in 1916 and 1920, but in neither case was the Senator elected.

Senator Richard Stone also has the distinction of serving as Florida’s second and most recent Jewish U.S. Senator (1975-1980), and being the first Jewish Senator from the south elected by popular vote. Florida’s first Jewish Senator, David Levy Yulee, was also the first Jew in Congress, elected to the House of Representatives as a delegate from the Florida Territory in 1841 before Florida became a state. In 1845, Levy Yulee was elected by the Florida Legislature to the U.S. Senate. There were two other Southern Jews in the Senate before Stone – both also chosen by their state Legislators – Judah P. Benjamin, who served from Louisiana before the Civil War and Benjamin Jonas, also from Louisiana, who served after the war.

Highlights of Senator Stone’s term include his efforts in promoting transparency in government, starting on the personal level with the removal of his office doors, to assisting with the Taiwan Relations Act, Camp David Accords and the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty (1978-79). Senator Walter Mondale called Stone, “one of the heroes of the success of the Camp David

summit talks,” while Senator Bob Dole said, on the 35th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, that he considers it “one of the most important pieces of legislation with which I have been associated.”

In 1980, Senator Stone lost his bid for reelection in the Democratic primary to Bill Gunter, who subsequently lost to Republican nominee Paula Hawkins. Stone continued as an active force in the political arena, with his appointment as a member of President Reagan’s Transition Team the day after the election and his Ambassadorships to Central America (1983-1984) and Denmark (1991-93).

Throughout his career, Senator Stone was known for his likeability and his hearty way of relating to people of all types and cultures. One of his most important assets was his “First Lady,” Marlene. When they took their marriage vows in 1957, neither knew how significant her role would be in assisting in political relationship building, from hosting elegant affairs for dignitaries from all corners of the world to intimate dinners at home, all with her warm and welcoming style. Foreign policy efforts were a team effort in the Stone house, wherever they lived, as she studied each culture and took an active role to create the right atmosphere for success.

This colorful exhibit tells not only the story of a man who served his state and country, but also chronicles the historic events during this time period and the dramatic changes that took place here in Florida, the U.S. and abroad.

Education

The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU offers this contest in conjunction with our upcoming exhibit: From a Coin Toss into Politics: The Life of a Senator, on view from September 16, 2014 – March 22, 2015.

This exhibit highlights the life and many leadership roles of Senator Richard Stone, who was Florida’s second and most recent Jewish U.S. Senator (1975-1980). Senator Stone’s official leadership career spanned 40 years of service, though his first act of public policy advocacy actually occurred when he was eight years old, lobbying for the building of a median on Washington Ave on Miami Beach!

Answering the question, “What makes a good leader?” is difficult, since there is no one-size-fits all definition of leadership. A leader is generally defined as someone who guides or influences others, either in a formal setting, such as a political office, or an informal setting, such as directing the efforts of a group project.

WRITING PROMPT: Tell us about a specific incident when you, or someone you admire, used leadership skills to effect positive actions and/or changes. Include details of the leadership skills that were applied and any challenges you or the leader had to overcome to produce the desired results.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? All Florida students in grades 6-12. One entry per student.

You may submit a poem, monologue, dialogue, essay (narrative, expository, or persuasive), or short story.

Submissions will be scored as follows:

1. Follow the writing prompt closely. Define leadership as it relates to the situation you are describing. Tell about something that has special meaning for you and why it was significant. (35 points)

2. Use metaphor, vocabulary, and expressive language to evoke feelings. (20 points)

3. Make sure that your writing is compelling, that it inspires and/or engages people. (15 points)

4. Use main ideas and details in an essay, or creatively build momentum in your story or poem. (15 points)

5. Use proper writing skills: grammar, spelling, writing rules and also follow the guidelines below. (15 points)

GUIDELINES: Submissions must be in 12-point font on 8 ½” x 11” white paper, maximum length of 500 words. Completed application forms must be attached and can be downloaded from the Museum’s website: www.jewishmuseum.com.

DEADLINE: All submissions must be received by mail or delivery by Friday, November 14, 2014, 5:00 pm. to: JMOF-FIU, 301 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139. No email entries accepted.

PRIZES: Prizes will be awarded to (3) middle school and (3) high school students as follows:

1st Prize: $125 2nd Prize: $75 3rd Prize: $50

The awards ceremony at the Museum will be held on Sunday, December 14, 2014. The winners’ classes will also receive a free school group tour of the exhibit.

Creative Writing Contest: “Stepping Up to Lead”Submission deadline: Friday, November 14, 2014

Sunday, November 2, 2014SENATOR RICHARD STONE: From a Coin Toss into Politics A Cross Curricular Workshop Emphasizing Leadership, Civic Engagement and Florida History

As Vince Lombardi, Colin Powell and others have said, “Leaders are not born, they are made.” This workshop will address how to cultivate leadership skills among students and fostering collaboration and consensus building to develop both leaders in the classroom and future leaders of our communities.

As part of the workshop, educators will break into groups to create a presentation for a sample lesson plan to share with all attendees. They will also discuss ways to apply these concepts to create lesson plans across multiple subject areas and grade levels. Education

Many Jewish parents often suffer from “post bar mitzvah stress disorder” or (PBMSD). It comes at the end of the big day, after months of planning and worrying about every detail. Will my son or daughter stumble over

the torah portion or finish writing the speech, what to do about clothing, late response cards, music selections and menu choices, we’ve all been there… It’s a big relief when the day finally arrives and everything works out perfectly. Now what?

We all hope that the bar or bat mitzvah ceremony is not the culmination of our child’s Jewish education, but rather a stepping-stone to more involved Jewish learning. With that in mind, the Jonathan

Symons B’nai Mitzvah Project was developed to provide opportunities for post bar and bat mitzvah celebrants and their families to experience creative programing at the museum and learn more about Jewish history, art and culture through the themes in our exhibits and collections.

We already have more than 400 families participating in this program and look forward to welcoming the 2014-15 b’nai mitzvah students this year. Please contact us to make sure you are on our list.

Remember, a visit to the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU can help relieve your pre or post bar or bat mitzvah stress! We look forward to seeing you soon.

Monday, September 29, 7:00 p.m.Mondays at the Museum SeriesWill the Circle be Unbroken? Lecture by Dr. Andrew GottliebEven the first of the Hebrews feared they would be the last. Beginning with Abraham and Sara’s apprehension that they would not conceive a child and pass on their heritage l’dor v’dor, from one generation to the next, each successive generation of the Jewish people has also feared that it would be the last. These fears have been built on a history of exile, pogrom, Holocaust and many other threats, yet the Jewish people have endured these trials over thousands of years. Reeling from the recent Religion & Public Life Project (Pew, 2013), Jewish America is following in this tradition of anxiety over its survival. Without dismissing these veritable and alarming concerns, this lecture will examine them in the context of Jewish American history over the previous century, and discuss inspiring new trends that will balance this concern with a dose of optimism. $5 JMOF-FIU Members; $10 Non-Members; Free for Students with valid ID.RSVP: Online- www.jewishmuseum.com Email: [email protected] or call 786-972-3175.

Exhibit

The Chosen: Selected Works from Florida Jewish Art Collectors

This groundbreaking exhibit will showcase a prominent work

chosen from a cadre of Florida’s preeminent Jewish art

collectors, representing their varied passions and prized

collections. Just as the Jewish people have historically focused

on the importance of remembering the past and teaching future

generations, art is also a vehicle for linking the past and looking

towards the future. Each collection tells its own story about the

collectors: why and how they start collecting, how they chose

the pieces they have acquired, how their collections enhance

their lives, as well as their depth, commitment, passion, vision

and philosophy. This exhibit is curated by pioneer gallery owner

Bernice Steinbaum, also a Florida Jewish art collector. Steinbaum

uses her creative and innovative talents in selecting the works for

this show, noting, “We have never looked at what our community

collects. We suspect there is not a connective tissue, other than

our own Jewish DNA, but we are curious about the story these

collectors and their works will tell.”

Festive Members’ Exhibit Opening Reception: Monday, November 3, 2014 at 6:00 pm.

Collections

Keys to the Collection offers an inside peek at JMOF-FIU’s vast collectionsFrom the Collections of the Jewish Museum of Florida, originated by Marcia Jo Zerivitz, founding executive director.

As is the case for all museums, our limited amount of gallery space prevents us from showing visitors everything in our collection, which includes more than 100,000 artifacts, documents, photographs and ephemera. This series provides the opportunity for a “behind the scenes look” at items in our collection, giving our audience from all over the world a chance to learn about some of our museum’s treasures.

Pocket watch with Hebrew numerals owned by George Dzialynski, born in 1857, in Jacksonville. George was the first child born in Florida to a Jewish family that planted roots in the state and has continued to live here as Jews since 1850.

Featuring nostalgic images of Florida Jewish High Holiday celebrations

It’s important to remember that the museum would not have its extensive collection if it weren’t for so many of you who have graciously donated your family’s memorabilia to be preserved and available for future generations. To add items about the past and current Florida Jewish experience to the museum’s collection, please contact the registrar at 786-972-3167.

To submit a nominee for the award, to be presented in April 2015, please visit www.jewishmuseum.com and download the nomination guidelines and application form, or contact Nancy Cohen, Membership Director, at 786-972-3164 or [email protected].

Page 27: Tiles Fall 2014

The Jewish Museum of Florida opened in 1995 in a former historic synagogue that housed the first congregation on Miami Beach. Built in 1936, the Henry Hohauser designed building that underwent a two-year restoration, boasts Art Deco features, a copper dome and 80 stained glass windows. In 2007, the museum expanded into the original 1929 synagogue next door after a one-year restoration, now The Jonathan Symons Building. Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, the two buildings were connected with a skylighted Bessie’s Bistro.

The museum is much more than beautiful buildings. It is a place that presents its own and traveling exhibits, sponsors cultural and educational programs, houses a Collections & Research Center reflecting 250 years of Florida Jewish history, and communicates Jewish history, art, culture and values to Jews and non-Jews alike in an informal mode. The museum is also a place where Jews of all ages and stripes discover and reaffirm their rich heritage – thus helping to strengthen Jewish identity and ensure Jewish continuity.

So how did all this get started? You may already know if you are among those who participated in and enjoyed the exhibit MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida that traveled to 13 cities (1990-94). Depicting Florida Jewish history from 1763 to the present, this was a statewide grassroots project to collect material evidence from the time Jews were first allowed to live in the Sunshine State. Thousands of photographs, artifacts and oral histories were gathered from families and this collection continues now in the museum, which was created as a result of the interest and support garnered from the original MOSAIC project.

Where the traveling exhibit was the launch, the Jewish Museum of Florida further delves into the state’s rich Jewish history of yesterday and today – for the future.

Historic Partnership with Florida International University (FIU) Following the approval of the museum’s Board of Directors, Florida International University’s Board of Trustees and the Florida Board of Governors, the museum became part of the FIU family in December 2012. This historic partnership leverages the resources of the museum and FIU, igniting a new era of interdisciplinary education and research focused on the history of the Jewish experience in Florida, the ways in which Florida Jews influence and are influenced by the cultural dynamics of Florida, the nation and the world, and issues of discrimination against all peoples in Florida throughout history. A key component of the partnership is the relocation of a variety of FIU programs, including the Jewish Studies Certificate Program, to the museum’s facilities. The plan also includes the expansion of academic programs and research endeavors designed to educate FIU students, faculty and the greater Florida community about the challenges of the immigrant experiences shared by all ethnicities in the State.

Whether your family has lived in Florida for eight generations, as some have, or just arrived – YOUR story is an important tile in the MOSAIC. Join us!
