    2/2

IntroductionThe number of patients with heart disease living with a cardiovascular implantable

electronic device (CIED), such as an implantable cardioverter debrillator (ICD) or an

ICD with cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT-D), has increased substantially in the

past decade, and is projected to increase also in the future due to expanding indica-

tions. At present, nearly one million patients in North America and more than 800,000

patients in Europe have a CIED. Although the medical benets of device therapy are well

established, it is associated with complications and psychological distress in individual

    patients.

The primary focus of this two-day conference is on the patient perspective. Hence, the

impact of living with a CIED on the patient, and recent challenges, innovations and tools

to improve clinical care, will be discussed. The conference is of interest to physicians,

nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, technicians and other health-care professionals ac-

tive in the device eld and clinical settings.

The emphasis will be on building bridges between disciplines, research and clinical

practice. The program will include plenary sessions featuring prominent internationalexperts in the eld.

The conference will close with the PhD defence of Henneke Versteeg: Cardiovascular

implantable electronic devices: The patient perspective
