HOW many peupltWhere do they live—Where do they buy?

How do we meet the population changes? How canwe plan ahead for housing, schools, shopping areas, open lands and transportation?

The answers to all these questions and many moreare in the offing every ten years when the nationalcensus is taken. It is used as a guide in government, business, industry, education to anticipate the increas-ing demands of a successful American economy.

While plans are being developed for the 1970 cen-sus, there has been a flurry of controversy as to the cov-erage and procedures. Even Congress has evidencedconcern.

Congress should incisively examine the plans be-cause the cost of the operation is borne by the public. However, an adequate census is not a luxury but a neces-sity. The decennial census is not only authorized, butrequired; and not by legislation enacted by Congress, but by the Constitution itself.

It is the responsibility of every citizen to cooperatein making this 1970 census. The census is not an actof harassment or government prying, but is the per-formance of a necessary government function.

As plans are shaping up for the 1970 census, itwill provide the essential information necessary forboth government and business to make the necessaryprojections for the next decade and beyond.

So, when you are askijcl for census data, give thetime and effort necessary—to help yourself—your neigh-bor—and vour nation.

EconomistPeople Arc Different

What makes people different?Psychologists agree that no two

•people are alike, Learning to ap-preciate people's differences ispart of building a healthy per-sonality, says Sirs. Sylvia Mee-han, Monmouth County HomeEconomist.

Our differences give us personal-ity. One person may be shy andwithdrawn, while another is out-going and warm in his relaikm-ships with people.

Heredity and environment areresponsible for our differences.A child inherits from his parentswho in turn inherit from their par-ents and .so on back beyond trace-ability. You can often see thephysical characteristics of here-dity (a boy may be the splillin'image of his dad), but the in-heritance of intelligence and per-sonality are not so obvious.

No two peOple Imo the sameenvironment. Even Iwo broth-ers are different because one isolder. And girls hare differentchildhood oxiH>rience-> from hoys.

A parent who shows respeeffir his child's diffareneea willrecognize and encourage' hisstrengths, and help him ndjusf oraccommodate to his weaknesses.

Differences extend beyond (hehome into the neighborhood andworld community, reminds Mrs,

Meehan. An understanding ant-appreciation of differences makesit possible to respect the worthand dignity of individuals and theuniquess of each human personal-ity.

With this understanding and ap-preciation, it is not necessary foranyone to be frightened or hostilewhen confronted with somethingdifleient or now about a person.

I A firm foundation of respect fori each individual's uniqness leads• h interest and appreciation ofj such differences as personality, physical nuke-up, skin color, na-tionality, religion, cultural pat-terns and traditions.

To help make the understandingof differences an important aspectof your child's healthy personal-ity, write lo Mrs. Meehan, 20Court St., Freehold, and requesta copy of the free leaflet — Dif-ferences, Bridge or Barrier tHealthy Personality.
