This Is Not YOUR Math…. the third in a series of articles on mathematics education. This spring we at SJCS are piloting four dierent sets of mathematics curriculum materials throughout grades 1, 2, 3 and 6-8. All four sets use an approach in which the teacher guides students to investigate and develop strategies to find solutions to real-life math problems. Heard in second grade, a student said, “Oh the math is easy, but now we really have to think, because we have to explain how we do things and why." This is the essence of the transition between a “do the algorithm” math education and a “mathematical reasoning” education. Of course this often leads to the teacher asking questions (to elicit mathematical reasoning responses from the student) rather than giving answers. The challenge comes in leading students to eciency in algorithm completion based on their understanding of the mathematics behind the algorithm. While this transition does take time, after a while students see reasoning as “the way we do math.” Again, students not only complete algorithms eciently, they understand the mathematical reasoning involved. This Is Not YOUR Math…. the third in a series of articles on mathematics education.

This spring we at SJCS are piloting four different sets of mathematics curriculum materials throughout grades 1, 2, 3 and 6-8.

The challenge comes in leading students to efficiency in algorithm completion based on their understanding of the mathematics behind the algorithm. While this transition does take time, after a while students see reasoning as “the way we do math.” Again, students not only complete algorithms efficiently, they understand the mathematical reasoning involved.

Girls Volleyball:The Lady Tigers finished off their season on a high note, defeating Legacy in a two game sweep. The win ends the girls season with a 5-5 record. This young Tigers team played hard and continuously improved throughout the season. Congratulations to all the girls who were a part of this years team. A BIG thank you to Coach Rivas and Coach Bowen for all their time and effort this year.

Next up for girls sports is Soccer! If you are interested in playing this year, there will be a meeting on Thursday, 3/19, at lunch in room 16. Please plan on attending if you are interested in playing.

Tiger Cubs|Preschool News!Future Enrollment - Please remember to submit your student's forms for next year's enrollment. You can check in with Mr. Intlekofer, Mrs. Phillips, or Ms. Ashley at any time to discuss your plans. Please also remember that we have a fun, enriching, and exciting summer semester planned! Your family plans for summer enrollment can be submitted to the office at the same time as re-enrollment.

The Annual SJCS Auction - is coming up on April 18th! Preschool families are highly encouraged to attend this wonderful event. Childcare is available for students who are potty trained. If you have something you would like to donate for the auction, it would be very appreciated! Come to the auction and you will even be able to bid on some fun auction items made by our very own preschool classes!

Terra Nova Testing Week Is Coming Soon Each year, the SJCS students in Grades 1-8 complete the Terra Nova standardized tests. The results of these tests give parents insights into the academic profile of their children, and they help our school analyze the effectiveness of our curriculum.

Please make sure your children are present every day during the week of March 23-27 for the testing periods.

2015 Auction NewsThe SJCS Auction is slated for 6pm on Saturday, April 18 at the Campbell Community Center. Our theme this year is “The Time is Now!” Please consider items or experiences that you can donate to the event. A dinner hosted by your family, a stay at a vacation destination, a gift basket, or sports memorabilia: There are endless possibilities for donations that will bless the school. Be creative in your thinking, and make your donation today! You can drop gifts by the office or inform our coordinators of your ideas. Email Betsy Phillips ([email protected]) with your ideas.

Teacher Tales A Commitment to Serve Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School.

Our school-wide service project is off to a fantastic start! In only two days since the launch, students have already brought in seventy filled M&M tubes! We are already 20% of the way to our 350 tube goal. Better yet: every classroom—from our Preschool 3 year olds all the way through 8th grade—has turned in tubes. The fourth grade class is currently leading the school with 15 tubes.

The competition between classes and the potential prizes are exciting parts of this project, but we don’t want them to distract students (or parents) from the real driving force behind service: a willing heart of sacrifice in response to Christ’s sacrifice for us. True service flows from a love for God, and that is the message we most want students to hear over the next month. Our teachers emphasize this message daily, and we appreciate your reinforcement of this at home.

A quick reminder: this project is for students, and the best way for them to appreciate the work of service and sacrifice is to have them earn the change they collect. We recommend that instead of merely giving students your spare change, have them brainstorm ways to earn it.

One of our SJCS Throughlines is that we strive to train Humble Servants who put the needs of others before their own. Philippians 2:4 urges us to “look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Please remind your child of the real impact of the work they do: each filled tube represents two months of nourishment for a starving child.

What a great opportunity we have to engage the world for Jesus Christ through this project! As we approach Easter and remember the sacrifice that Good Friday commemorates, let’s serve Christ through serving others. Thank you for your partnership and prayers.
