Purpose of CCHIT – Mission and Goal
• To accelerate the adoption of health information technology by creating an efficient, credible, and sustainable certification program
• To develop, create prototypes for, and evaluate the certification criteria and inspection process for EHRs
Background of CCHIT - History
• Originally established in July 2004• Founded by:
– American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
– Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)
– The National Alliance for Health Information Technology (The Alliance)
• HHS awarded contract in October 2005• Transitioning to a self-sustaining model
Progress of CCHIT – Certification Criteria for Health IT Systems Established
• Functionality – Ensuring that the systems can support the activities and
perform the functions for which they are intended
• Security – Ensuring that systems can protect and maintain the
confidentiality of data entrusted to them
• Interoperability – Ensuring that systems can connect to and exchange
information with other systems
